The course ’Anthropology of arts’ is an introduction into the use of anthropoligical notions in
discussions about arts. It’s aim is achieving a proper understanding of Arts’s place in culture
generally, presenting theories as well as analysis of art pieces (such as paintings, sculptures,
literature), also paying attention to the cultural surroundings in which these have come to life.
American anthropologist Clifford Geertz’s theory ‘art as cultural system‘ is approached when
arguing the relationship between art and culture. While interpreting pieces of art, means and
results of historical anthropology, hagiography are evoked, trying to link contemporaneous
literature (such as Medieval narratives and legends) to art pieces. Another important line is
discussing the possible effects of the big epidemics on everyday life and artistic activity in

Medieval Europe. Also important point of the analysis are the notions ‘healing art’ (analysis of altar
disciplinei paintings from Medieval monk hospitals). During seminars, students apply these notions in order
