PAST PERFECT SIMPLE

(Subject+had+Verb III)

Exprimă o acţiune trecută care s-a petrecut înaintea altei acţiuni din trecut (mai mult ca
perfect românesc).
e.g. She remembered that she had met him before. (Ea şi-a amintit că l-a
întâlnit / îl întâlnise înainte.)
Time expressions: before, after, by the time, since, for.

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS

(Subject+had+been+Verb-ing)

Exprimă o acţiune trecută care s-a desfăşurat continuu pe o perioadă de timp şi a durat
până la un anumit moment din trecut (un imperfect românesc cu accent pe durată).
e.g. They had been watching TV for an hour when it started to rain. Se uitau la
televizor de o oră când a început să plouă.
Compare! When I came home, they were watching TV. (Past Continuous:se pune
accentul pe acţiune)
When I came home, they had been watching TV for an hour. (Past Perfect
Continuous:se pune accentul pe durata acţiunii)
Time expressions: all day, since, for.
