 Comisia de Etică Universitară propune achiziționarea unei aplicații software pentru
detectarea plagiatului care să îndeplinească următoarele cerințe minimale:
- analizarea următoarelor tipuri de documente în format electronic: *.rtf, *.doc, *.docx,
*.pdf, *.txt *.ppt,*.pptx,
- să permită verificarea plagiatului pentru documente redactate în principalele limbi de
circulație internațională și în limba română,
- să permită verificarea documentelor pe INTERNET și în baza de date proprie,
- să genereze rapoarte detaliate,
- să permită analiza textelor cross language.

Dezavantaje:
The reports which the checker produces are comprehensive, all singing and all dancing
with pie charts and lots of colour; however, this is greatly undermined by the poor
performance of the scanner. The pricing options are also questionable – anyone purchasing
a ‘Lite’ version is purchasing something with greatly limited functionality and this is an
example where pricing is structured to encourage the customer into splashing out the full

$99. Don’t be fooled, however, because despite its appearance, this software isn’t worth
spending your money on: there are other plagiarism scanners out there which are just as
unreliable or more reliable – and free.

internet-based (online) resources (e.g. blogs, websites, live and cached internet links,
message boards, PDFs etc.) and paper-based (offline) resources (e.g. books, articles,

3. Turnitin – Tehnologie antiplagiat pentru profesori, student si cercetatori

The file size may not exceed 20 MB. Files of larger size may be reduced in size by
removal of non-text content. Files that are password protected, encrypted, hidden, system
files, or read only files cannot be uploaded or submitted to Turnitin.
Text only files may not exceed 2 MB.
The zip file upload accepts up to 1000 files or 100MB of zipped information. A zip file
to be uploaded may not exceed either limit. Zip files should be checked to ensure only
usable file formats are included in the upload.
Turnitin will automatically exclude papers submitted to the class under the same
author's name from the Originality Report for a paper. Please note the names must be
identical for this feature to work (i.e. John Doe is not recognized as the same author as
Jonathan Doe).
Turnitin currently accepts the following file types for submission: MS Word (.doc),
WordPerfect (.wpd), PostScript (.eps), Portable Document Format (.pdf), HTML (.htm),
Rich Text (.rtf) and Plain Text (.txt). All files submitted to Turnitin must be text based.
Papers which have been scanned must be sent through Optical Character Recognition
(OCR) software before they can be submitted to Turnitin.

 Turnitin accepts submissions in most languages, including Romanian. In terms of
content, its effectiveness in other languages depends on the content of the 3 databases.
None of these are language specific, so all contain foreign language text, but the amount
depends on various factors:
• Current and archived internet (over 28.8 billion pages) – this is the most complete
in terms of language content as it trawls all pages on yahoo search.
• Student paper database (over 220 million papers) – this is primarily English,
however, we do have big institutions from all over the world submitting papers in other
languages, so the content is constantly increasing, and it will of course also work to find
collusion between students in your institution.
• Journals and Publications – (Hundreds of major newspapers, magazines & scholarly
journals) this again is primarily English, mainly because the majority of academic papers
are published in English, however, we do have publications from around the world and we
are also reviewing the procedure for adding content which should make it easier for small
publishers and universities to add to this database going forward.
Turnitin consists of three writing tools to help improve student writing:
OriginalityCheck, plagiarism detection tool, GradeMark, online grading tool, and
PeerMark, peer review tool. OriginalityCheck checks through our extensive database as
described above and detects and highlights any matching text. GradeMark simplifies the
grading process and allows instructors to provide detailed feedback to students, including
voice comments. PeerMark allows students to anonymously give one another feedback on
assignments within a class. Further information about these features can be found on the

GradeMark Interactive Tutorial that allows instructors the chance to try out GradeMark
without having to grade an actual assignment.
The cost of a Turnitinlicence is based on the type of institution (Higher -, Further -,
Secondary Education), as well as the full-time equivalent (FTE) enrolment of the

5. Strike plagiarism
Contrary to what the name of the System may suggest, Strikeplagiarism.com does not
detect cases of plagiarism. The task of the System is to provide information on the scope
and sources of fragments that may not be the original work of a student to enable
supervisors, after a careful analysis, to decide on what to do with the alleged cases of
plagiarism and eventually what to do with the paper.
The results of the System analysis are generated in a Similarity Report that helps
supervisors come to the right decision. Similarity Report contain the following data:
 The Similarity Coefficient 1 showing by a percentage value, the part of the
analysed document which is identical to documents in the System databases and
Internet,
 The Similarity Coefficient 2 shows by a percentage value the similarity to other
documents in fragments longer than 25 words,
 A list of the longest fragments identified as similar,
 Lists of the sources in which identical parts were detected,
 The text content of the document in which the allegedly copied fragments are
highlighted in different colours (depending on the source) a function that greatly
simplifies the assessment.

6. Software Anti-Plagiarism – elaborate pentru detectarea efectiva prin aceasta

prevenirea plagiarismului. Este un instrument versatile pentru combatarea fenomenului
Copy Paste.
Scopul acestui program consta in reducerea impactului plagiatului in educatie si

7. CopyScape
During tests, Copyscape’s plagiarism scanner performed well, identifying
plagiarism in four out of the six test documents.
Reports are generated within the browser but these cannot be downloaded and
shared.

10. Passproof - On the whole, £2.99 for one go of their scanner wouldn’t be good
value for money … even if it was working, so it’s probably quicker and easier to give up

14. Effective Papers - The results from tests carried out on the checker were good. It
detected plagiarism in four out of the six test documents.
Dezavantaje: Five scans per month allowed. Customers of the site, who have purchased a
custom essay, are allowed up to 100 scans a month.

15. Plagiarismchecker
The scanner works by taking the first 18 words of any submission and running
them through a search engine – by default this is Google, but Yahoo may also be selected.
If the document has been plagiarised, and if the site the words have been plagiarised from
has been indexed by google, this will show up in the results. The results are listed as
Googlesearch results (if this has been selected) and highlight in bold any matching
entries.There are a number of drawbacks with this online scanner.
Quite like the online scanner itself, this rather over-complicates a simple process.

16. PlagiarismDetect- When testing the scanner using premium quality searches, it
detected plagiarism in four out of six sample documents, a good result.
Plagiarism Detect has a professional website and they claim to “check for plagiarism
like nobody else”. This is refreshing at it’s one of the few paid-for services which doesn’t
made grandiose claims it can’t substantiate. The layout of the website is simple but not
basic and provides a lot of useful information, including an FAQ section. It also offers a
full money back guarantee.The pricing structure is both clear and reasonable. A scan can
cost between 10c and 50c, depending on which type is selected and, what’s notable is that
users can purchase just one scan, at 10c, if they want to (of course, this doesn’t get you

much!). However, this is very different from most of its subscription-based competitors
who, at the minimum, require users to spend at least $5.
The plagiarism scanner which features on the website doesn’t have a file upload
facility so work has to be copied and pasted directly into the browser. Users can select
between a premium quality scan (5 credits per 275 words) or a standard quality scan (1
credit per 275 words). The scanning of small documents is reasonably quick – all samples
took less than a minute to process.

17. Plagiarism-Detect 2 - The website itself is a very basic design with a header,
some stats down the left hand side and a box into which text can pasted. In addition, files
may be uploaded, although it sometimes struggles with this and crashes, so the scanning
process is much quicker if text is copied and pasted directly into the browser. There is also

an update which warns the user that, due to technical changes in the way search engines
work (and new associated costs), the scanner may not “work correctly”.

Although scoring around average amongst its contemporaries by identifying

plagiarism in half of the sample documents, the warning from its homepage, the
unreliability of its document upload facility and the basicness of its overall design means
it’s a website many will want to avoid.
