Mnstirea Cuviosului Gherasim era departe de Sfnta cetate a Ierusalimului
ca la treizeci i cinci de stadii, iar de rul Iordanului, ca de o stadie. n aceasta
primea pe cei noi nceptori, iar prinilor celor desvrii le ddea n pustie
chilii sihstreti. Erau sub mna lui n pustie nu mai puin de aptezeci dintraceti vieuitori, crora le era dat rnduiala vieii de Cuviosul Gherasim, astfel:
Cinci zile pe sptmn fiecare edea n pustniceasca sa chilie, singur, n tcere,
avnd oarecare lucru de mini; mnca puin pine uscat, pe care o aducea cu
sine din mnstire, ap i curmale; iar a gusta vreo fiertur nu le era slobod; nici
foc nu-i lsa s aprind n chiliile lor, ca nici cu cugetul s nu doreasc ceva n
acele cinci zile. Smbta i duminica toi veneau n mnstire i se adunau n

mai multe lumi i le-ar mpodobi cu frumuseile desvririlor lui i a nsuirilor

unde poate duce plcerea insuportabil a sufletului?
Isihastul a tcut cteva clipe i apoi a continuat:
-n contemplarea lui Dumnezeu, mintea e luat pe sus de dragoste. E luat
prin surprindere. Inima tresalt i duhul se veselete. Omul se nal n vzduh,
sufletul se elibereaz de povara trupului. De aici ncolo, mintea devine ceea ce
vede. De la nelepciunea dumnezeiasc devine neleapt. De la sfinenie devine
sfnt. De la buntate, bun. De la simplitate, simpl. De la lumina
dumnezeiasc, toat lumin.

,,Ei, atunci avem nc un argument c iadul este pe pmnt. n Romnia e
foarte mult durere insuficient sau prost tratat. Nu trebuie s mai ajungem n
vreun iad, suntem pe deplin familiarizai cu el. Mergi la orice cabinet medical,
mai mult de dou treimi din cei ce ajung acolo se plng de dureri. O alt parte
bun a durerii e c aduce bolnavul la medic. Dac te rzbate, n-ai ncotro. E aici
i o alt problem.
Cnd eram student ni se spunea cam aa: dac vine la voi un bolnav cu
puternice dureri abdominale, s nu cumva s-i calmai durerea. Lsai durerea s
iradieze, pentru c n funcie de cum evoloueaz, ntr-o parte sau alta, o s ne
dm seama care e organul n suferin. Suntem n mileniul trei, iar dac mai
gndete cineva aa, atunci este o dovad de prostie i incompeten. Acum se
spune c, dac la o jumtate de or de la prezentarea la o unitate spitaliceasc a
unui bolnav, nu i s-a calmat durerea, nseamn c avem de-a face cu
incompeten. Exist azi metode paraclinice, de laborator, prin care se poate
depista organul n suferin fr s lsm bolnavul s geam.
