1. The Past Tense Trecutul Simplu

n limba englez, trecutul simplu are o singur form pentru toate
persoanele, cu excepia verbului to be. Trecutul simplu al verbelor regulate
se formeaz prin adugarea sufixului(terminaiei) ed la forma de infinitiv a
verbului care este conjugat.

Regular Verbs Verbe regulate

she remembered ea i-a amintit she danced ea a dansat
he remembered el i-a amintit he danced el a dansat

they remembered ei i-au amintit they danced ei au dansat

n funcie de context, n limba romn, The Past Tense este fie echivalentul
perfectului compus fie al imperfectului.
Verbul to be, care este neregulat, are dou forme la trecut: was i were

I was a teacher. Am fost profesor.
You were tired. Erai obosit.
She was happy. Era fericit.
He was in Paris last week. Era la Paris sptmna trecut.
We were friends. Am fost prieteni.
You were my students. Ai fost studenii mei.
They were busy. Erau ocupai.

Celelalte verbe neregulate au, la trecut, o singur form pentru toate
persoanele, form care trebuie memorat ca atare.

Ce ai tu de fcut? Ai de nvat, la fiecare lecie, cte zece verbe neregulate
mpreun cu toate formele lor de infinitiv, trecut i participiu trecut.

Verbul to have este, de asemenea, neregulat i are la trecut forma had:

She had a nightmare. A avut un comar.

de lucruri de fcut cnd ne-am ntors acas.

Auxiliarul to do are i el o singur form la Past Tense = did.

I did all that I had to do. Am fcut tot ce aveam de fcut.
We did our best to save him. Am fcut tot ce ne-a stat n puteri s-l salvm.

La trecut, forma negativ se obine n acelai fel ca la prezent.

I didnt disturb her. Nu am deranjat-o.
She didnt remember the question. Nu i-a amintit ntrebarea.
They didnt dance at the party. N-au dansat la petrecere.
We didnt buy the flat. Nu am cumprat apartamentul.

I have something in common with Jim Patrick. I am a Romanian married to
an Englishman and he is an Englishman married to a Romanian. His wife,
Paula, is from Bucharest. They are husband and wife for six years and they
have a daughter of four, Lily. I and Jim are good friends now. That is why
