Happy summer day!

We all can go and play,
Out in the sunshine,

Admiring the skyline,

Walking along the Riverbank
Or dreaming of the Wonderland.

Alice, the dream-child

Moving through a land
Of wonders wild and new,
In friendly chat with
bird or beast
And half believe it true.

UGLY DUCKLING

Once upon a time, there lived a duck family, on a farm. One

morning, the Mother Duck was sitting on her new eggs waiting for
the ducklings to come out.
All the tiny ducklings had bright little eyes and pretty little beaks.
But one of the ducklings was not pretty. I can't understand how this
ugly duckling can be
one of mine!
said Mother Duck.

58

The grey duckling wasn't pretty and all his brothers laughed at
him. They would not let him eat anything and did not want to play
with him.
Nobody loves me! Why am I different from my brothers? said
the duckling to himself, looking at him in the waters of a lake.

59

He felt nobody wanted him and decided to leave home. Then,

one day, with tears in eyes, he ran away from the farm in search of a
place where nobody would laugh at him.
Winter came and the water in the lake froze. The ugly duckling
spent the whole cold winter in an empty house in the forest.
One day, in spring, he came out of the house and went for a walk,
and found he could flap his wings.

60

The duckling came near the lake and saw beautiful white swans
swimming across the water. Looking at the beautiful swans, the
duckling thought to himself, If I dare to go near them, they will not
like me because I am so ugly.
As he was about to dive in the water, he saw his own reflection in
the clear water. To his surprise, he found that he was no more an ugly
duckling, but a beautiful swan!

Of course, the swan, the ugly duckling, was very happy. He

saw a beautiful female swan and his heart filled with love for her. He
lived with her happily ever after.
