(Fig. 6) și Cuptoare13 (Fig. 8). Tot aici trebuie menționate și coifurile de
tip Chalcidic de la Făcău14 (Fig. 8/1-2), Zimnicea15 (Fig. 7/1-2),
Mercina16, Olănești17 (Fig. 9) și obrăzarul de la Ocna Sibiului18 (Fig. 7/3),
12
Panait 1992, p. 325-334.

a.Chr.

THE CHALCIDIAN HELMET FROM BALȘ, OLT COUNTY

Lazăr 2008, p. 9-13; Lazăr 2009, p. 13-26.
2
We do not believe that the late historian Al. Vulpe, who was a professional
with an outstanding academic stance, would have endorsed this way of introducing the
artifact in the scientific circuit, as insistently stated in the two articles where the helmet
is presented incompletely, especially since the renowned archaeologist advised us to take
all possible steps so that the object remains in the patrimony of the museum in Slatina. It
seems to us at least bizarre and unprofessional to claim that you “received information
about this discovery and the photograph of the helmet”, as well as “permission to use
those materials” (Lazăr 2008, p. 7), thus obtaining the “legitimacy” necessary to initiate
a scientific approach. Al. Vulpe could not offer a publication agreement regarding an
The Chalcidian Helmet from Balș, Olt County 271
object about which he did not have all the information and which was in the patrimony
of the Olt County Museum. We mention that the author of the articles never made any
official request to the holding institution to research the object, as it was and is proper
from the point of view of professional deontology, nonchalantly preferring a dishonest
method of research (L. F. Guțică).

wave (stylized ram horns?) in the upper back of each cheekpiece, created
in the au repoussé technique (Fig. 4/3).
The artifact discovered in Balș was the subject of comparative
metallographic analyzes, performed at the “Horia Hulubei” Institute of
Physics and Nuclear Engineering, Bucharest, by the late specialist Dr.
Bogdan Constantinescu. The technique of elemental analysis by X-ray
fluorescence (XRF), based on a radioactive source of Americium-241,
with a total radioactivity of 30 mCi was used (Fig. 5). It turned out that
the artifact is made of bronze - copper-tin alloy, in a proportion of 65%
Cu - 35% Sn (unlike the helmet from Budești, where the proportion is
88% Cu - 12% Sn)8.
In the alloy of the Balș artifact, the presence of nickel, zinc,
arsenic and traces of lead, iron, silver and gold was also highlighted.
Traces of precious metals allow the hypothesis that the artifact had silver-
and/or gold-gilt portions. Another indicator of gilding is given by the fact
that the item from Budești also has undoubtable and consistent traces of
silver, revealed by the metallographic analyze.
The presence of iron and nickel in the alloy used suggests Balkan
mining sources for the helmet from Balș, from the area of northern
Bulgaria or from the space of the former Yugoslavia (Rudna Glava?). By
comparison, the presence of lead and silver in the case of the one from
Budești suggests a possible Transylvanian mining source.
This type of military helmet circulated for a long time, between
th rd
the 6 -3 centuries BC. and over a wide geographical area, between
southern Italy, Greece, Macedonia, Thrace, the shores of the Black Sea
and the north of the Balkan Peninsula. The long time in which they were
fashionable, as well as the chorological dispersion inevitably led to the
appearance of variants. The typology accepted and used today, refined by
H. Pflug9, considering that these helmets can be divided into five main
types10.

Panait 1992, p. 325-334. It should be noted that in this case the analogy is
indirect, because the cheekpieces, initially mobile, are “fixed” following the repairs that
the artifact has undergone, which aligns the helmet to a different typology than the one
from the time and place of its manufacture and especially reveals the long time of use of
the helmet. The photos of this helmet were kindly offered to us by V. Opriș and S.

13
Oprinescu 1987, p. 127-129. It should be noted that in the case of this helmet,
the fact that the upper part of the cap was discovered partially destroyed by the burning
of the deceased, and the helmet was not restored, the graphic reconstruction (Fig. 8) is
only a guess of the real shape of the item, at the level of knowledge and typological
classification at the time of discovery, aspects already obvious at the time of publication,
and which imposed some pertinent observations (see Gumă 1991, p. 95, note 51). To
these data is added the incomplete historical file of the artifact, namely the fact that the
archaeological research of the tomb has not been exhausted, the site documentation is
missing, and the helmet is not found even now, uninventoried and probably lost in
museum deposits.

The location of this ancient discovery generated some confusion from the
beginning, perpetuated until recent literature (Lazăr 2009, p. 16), being initially assumed
on the hills near Vršac, Vojvodina (Serbia), although the renowned archaeologist M.

Gumă drew attention to the subject long ago (Gumă 1991, p. 98, note 81). For additional
arguments on the identification of the discovery area as within the village of Mercina

Ștefan Vodă District, Republic of Moldova. Here was discovered in 1958 a
hoard consisting of six pairs of gilded bronze greaves (some fragmentary), six bronze
helmets, a three-armed bronze candlestick and a zoomorphic pendant made of a thin
sheet of gilded bronze. The two Chalcidian-type helmets discovered here (Fig. 9) - one
of which had been gilded - have lost their cheekpieces and have traces of repairs and
traces of blows received in Antiquity, which proves their long use. Today, five helmets
and nine greaves are preserved and the entire hoard was dated to the 4th century BC.
(Topal et al., mss). The treasure is in the patrimony of the National Museum of History

We add to the list the Corinthian helmet, a rarity in the North Danube area,
accidentally discovered in the Siret riverbed, within the commune Alexandru Ioan Cuza,
Iași County, recently recovered by the judiciary authorities and included in the national
patrimony.
276 Cătălin Borangic, Laurențiu Guțică-Florescu
The second stage, modeling the specific shape of the cap, is just as
demanding, as it also supposes special hammering techniques, not at all
simple or usual. The entire manufacturing process – from ingot to
polishing the helmet – required about 100 hours of work by a skilled
craftsman. We mention that each item had its peculiarities, given by the
size, accessories, decorations, technological capabilities, technical skills,
etc. and implicitly the working times were slightly different for each such
helmet20.
We can assume that, if we want to talk about local craftsmen who
knew these professional secrets, they were not very numerous, or, just as
possible, they worked with ready-laminated bronze sheets and they only
had to model the cap. The very likely possibility that the artisans were
itinerant Greek craftsmen21 should not be omitted from the analysis, the
necessary tools being neither very complex, nor numerous22.
We believe that, despite some opinions which, based on the
thickness of the sheet metal of the items, considered that these helmets
were only for parade23, they were an obvious part of the combat
equipment24. Not even the fact that they had gilded and/or silvered
portions qualifies them as parade weapons. Gilding weapons was a
relatively common practice in antiquity. One of the helmets from
Olănești, as well as the greaves from the same treasure have traces of
gilding, as well as the helmets from Eriklisse and Starosel25, to mention
only items that have fighting characteristics or context. Of course, the fact
that they were militarily functional did not negate their quality as prestige
items and an indicator of the owner’s social position.
20
The creation of a replica of a Chalcidian helmet and the recording of
technological data was made within an experimental archeology project carried out in
the workshops of the “Enciclopedia Dacica” Cultural Association by Augustin Nae.

And some tools could be made on site, just as it may have been the anvil and
hammer that could be made of stone or hardwood. A metal hammer compresses the alloy
molecules much more abruptly and accelerates the deformation of the sheet, often
causing microcracks, which is why an anvil hollowed out of wood or stone and a
wooden hammer were preferable, because they compress the metal at a slower rate and
with fewer shocks.

An argument in this sense is represented by the traces of blows with blunt
weapons and arrows identified on the helmets discovered at Olănești, even on the gilded
ones, undoubtedly trophies captured in battle (Arnăut 2003, p. 241).
