II a.Chr. și începutul secolului I p.Chr., a unui lider războinic puternic.

Dintre cele cinci orificii circulare, jaspul s-a păstrat

regretatul Al.

Participarea masivă a

despre simbolistica decorului redat.

PADEA-PANAGJURSKI KOLONII DISCOVERIES
IN NORTH-WESTERN ROMANIA.
THE SICA-TYPE DAGGER FROM SIGHIȘTEL, BIHOR COUNTY
Abstract
This article presents a recent discovery of a curved sica-type dagger. These
weapons were part of the panoply of the warriors who built a cultural phenomenon
known today, conventionally, as Padea-Panagjurski Kolonii, which began at the
end of the 4th century BC and lasted until the conquest of the Dacian Kingdom by
the legions of Emperor Trajan (106 AD).
The dagger was discovered with a metal detector in the radius of Sighiștel village,
Câmpani commune, Bihor County. The artifact belongs to type “C” of these
daggers, and it is exceptional both in its manner of manufacture and in its place of
discovery. On the blade of the dagger there was engraved an ornamentation
specific to this type of weapon, namely the heads of a couple of facing birds,
decorated with circles. Small pieces of semi-precious stone, most likely red jasper,
were set into these recessed circles.
The discovery of this dagger in the region signals the presence, sometime between
the 2nd century BC and the beginning of the 1st century AD of a powerful warrior
leader. It is the first discovery of its kind in a region very rich in hoards of Dacian
silver coins and ornaments. The dagger completes the local landscape with the
political, military and social landmarks existing in the rest of the Dacian Kingdom,
being a real link between the center of the kingdom and the lands to the north.

than 500 km away from its core. It would be more appropriate for this
cultural manifestation to be unequivocally attributed to the Dacian culture,
the only one of the participants in the initial hybridization that had
substantially appropriated this new identity and solidified it over time in
the form of a powerful political-military entity. Furthermore, the Thracian
contribution seems to have been the most consistent in this cultural mixture.
If we consider these cultural-archaeological realities, we can assess that,
for the North-Danubian area, the PPK-type inventories, originally specific
to a Celtic elite superimposed on the local Thracian population, belonged
to the Dacians, themselves a product of the cultural and demographic
osmosis in question. The dispersion of this model in the area north of the
river may have contained a demographic component, difficult to identify
now, but, most likely and more correctly, we can speak of the imposition
and dispersion of a type of social identity within the northern Thracian
world, with obvious, diverse and solid Celtic influences.
The bearers of this new culture, similar, but different in many
coordinates from the previous history of the region, were lords of war,
exceptional soldiers and outstanding builders alike, crafty metallurgists and
skilled artisans, known in history as Dacians 3, as they called themselves 4.
Speaking of the weapons that accompanied into eternity the
deceased warriors, it is noted that sica-type daggers are constant presences,
which is why they have become a marker of the elites of the PPK cultural
group. It is a fact, however, that the history and the spectacularity of these
daggers have ensured their status as an emblem, which can somewhat
explain the popularity that, undoubtedly, these weapons still have today.
However, their visibility is related not only to the fact that they
geographically delineate the territory that the PPK warriors controlled or
just influenced, but also to another, somewhat less pleasant reality.
In the last 20 years, Romanian systematic archeology, and not only,
contributed extremely rarely to the map of the discoveries of sica-type
daggers – artifacts through which we can understand a PPK-type deposit.
Concretely, there is only one archaeological discovery north of the Danube,
the one from Desa, Dolj County, made almost a decade ago and not

I call the aforementioned people Dacians (mentioned earlier, in the context of
Domitian’s war against them), the name used by themselves as well as by the Romans,

the right form or not (Dio Cassius LXVII, 6).

It is frustrating that changing the historical paradigms – in this case, those regarding the
Dacian Kingdom – is no longer a monopoly of archaeology, but this is the reality. The
historical record of the Dacian era (and not only) was constantly fed with fortuitous
discoveries, reasonable or not from the point of view of method or way of working, and
these discoveries compel extensive reconsiderations of a historical order and not only
(Borangic 2018: 380).

elites of the Dacian kingdom; this lack of information raised numerous and
pressing questions, and it did not logically resonate with the economic,
cultural and military benchmarks of the Dacian civilization in certain areas.
Through the metal detecting, practiced as a hobby by many
enthusiasts, new areas were “populated”, where previously the PPK
elements, specific to the Dacian military elites, were inexplicably missing.
A good example is the Curvature Carpathians, a very dynamic
region from the point of view of military architecture in the Dacian era, an
aspect visible in the frenzy with which numerous fortresses were built in
the area. Through the discovery of warrior graves, the area has been aligned
to the Pan-Dacian cultural model. Similarly, the Transylvanian Plateau and
the middle Mureș valley are regions that have changed their density of finds
of this type.
To these has been added recently the northwest of Romania, a
region that previously stood out only due to the abundance of silver
treasures. To some Thracian-type bits, complete or fragmented, from Sălaj 8
and Bihor 9 Counties, also discovered through metal detection, we can add
now a sica-type dagger from the area of Sighiștel village, a discovery that
outlines the historical potential of the area and reconfigures the general
picture.
From the Sighiștel valley, a unique area in the country due to the
density of the karst phenomena, N. Vlassa published some Neolithic
materials discovered in the “Dâmbu Colibii” cave, including a beautiful
complete cup with a leg 10.
A few years later, the same researcher published a series of
materials from the Măgura cave, at that time within the borders of the
Câmpani commune 11. The materials belonging to the Copper Age had been
incidentally discovered by C. Pleșa, during speleological research.
Other archaeological materials discovered in the Sighiștel valley, in
the “Dâmbu Colibii II” and the “Tunelul Uscat” caves, arrived at the end

Complex 12.
From the “Tunelul Uscat” cave comes a complete vessel that
contained a few bones 13. From a chronological point of view, these
materials belong to the end of the Bronze Age, more precisely to the Igrița
ceramic style, and their presence in this area demonstrates the connections
that the Igrița communities had with contemporary southern cultures.
The archaeological materials from the “Dâmbu Colibii II” cave,
discovered during speleological research in 2009, belong to the same
chronological horizon as those from the “Tunelul Uscat” cave, with the
mention that, as they were discovered on the surface, it is not possible to
specify the feature or features to which these fragments belong.
The situation is not unique, recent field research in the small cave
from “Varniță”, at the entrance in Sighiștel valley on the right slope (left
from a geographical point of view), highlighted the same archaeological
situation 14, except that the recovered materials belong to the Neolithic.
A series of archaeological researches in the Sighiștel Valley were
carried out in 1988 by a team led by Dr. M. Cârciumaru, when, along with
surface observations, several caves were surveyed on this occasion.
The investigated caves were: Dealu Cornii cave, Varniță cave,
Calului cave, Țibocoaia cave, Corbasca cave, Peștera de lângă Canion
(Cave near the canyon), Peștera cu Hornul Deschis (Open chimney cave),
Peștera cu cotituri (Bending cave), Abriul Drăcoaia, Peștera Albă (White
cave), Peștera Mare din Dâmbu Colibii (Large Cave from Dâmbu Colibii).
Publishing the conclusions of these researches in 2010, M. Cârciumaru
concludes that these caves were not used during the Paleolithic 15, but this
opinion was refuted in the very year of the publication of his researches by
the discoveries from Coliboaia cave, unique so far in Central Europe 16.
Regarding the conclusions drawn by the same researcher about the
research in the Varniță Cave, according to which there is no archaeological
material here, these have also been disproved by recent research that

3. The discovery
The artifact that is the subject of this study was discovered in the
summer of 2022 on the southwestern side of a promontory, called Fața
Pietrii, located approximately 1 km northwest from the center of Sighiștel
village, Câmpani commune, Bihor County (Fig. 3).
The promontory is located in the “Valea Sighiștelului” Special
Conservation Area, located in the western part of the Apuseni Natural Park,
and separates the bed of the Sighiștel River (Sohodolul Mare Valley) from
the Sodolul Pietrii Valley. The area is one of the most karstic areas in
Romania, around 100 caves and grottoes are inventoried here 17.
Oriented northeast southwest and with an elevation of 487 m, the
promontory is flanked and protected by higher heights to the northwest and
southeast (Fig. 4).
The artifact in question was discovered with the metal detector on
the small upper plateau (Fig. 3/3; Fig. 4/4). From the immediate vicinity of
the dagger, located approx. 10 cm deep from the current walking level, the
discoverer, A. Groza, a member of a local association of enthusiasts
practicing this hobby, also detected a number of arrowheads, made of sheet
iron (Fig. 5/2), but without these arrowheads being in direct and concrete
context either with the dagger or with each other. The dagger was placed
with the decorated side up, and at approx. 5 cm from the blade was
uncovered a detached part of the handle (Fig. 5/1).
The condition of the dagger is relatively good, the only part more
seriously affected being the handle. Given the quality of the wrought metal
and the fact that the artifact was not part of funerary rituals involving
intense burning, it has been satisfactorily preserved, despite being

other two on the neck, compared to the only two of the female, namely the
eye and the circle on the neck. All these circles were executed with great
care, by “drilling” the blade in depth, and finely polished fragments of red
jasper were inserted into the holes thus obtained. Of the five circular holes,
jasper was preserved in four perforations, namely in those of the “female”
and in two on the neck of the “male” bird. The stone from the “male” bird’s
eye is almost completely missing (Fig. 7/3), and in the other holes the
embedded jasper has been more or less damaged (Fig. 7).
The avian couple is positioned at the mid-length of the blade, at its
top, and interrupts the linearity of the two grooves that complete the
decoration. The thin grooves, made with great finesse, start from the area
of the handle guard – which has not been preserved – and extend almost to
the tip of the blade, where theoretically they come together or come very
close. The small portion at the tip of the blade is affected by corrosion
compounds of the iron, so the theoretical point of union of the two grooves
cannot be observed, but the visualization of their path leads to this
conclusion.
Like the tip of the blade, the handle is also seroiusly affected by the
passage of time. It is very likely that this part of the weapon was not as
carefully tempered as the blade, which of course had the consequences that
are now seen. Two pieces of the handle have been preserved: a smaller one,
still barely attached to the dagger, approx. 3 cm long, and a terminal one,
slightly larger, with a length of approx. 5 cm, detached from the rest of the
artifact. A rivet hole was preserved on both fragments. Interestingly, the
hole on the terminal fragment is asymmetrically perforated (Fig 6/1; Fig
6/3), but it is possible that the offset of the rivet hole is the result of material
loss from the handle. Any handle guard seals, if they ever existed, have not
been preserved.
The circular decorations that complete and ornament the birds
excised on the blade have a diameter of 3.3 mm, are framed by a border
whose outer diameter is 5.2 mm and deepen into the metal of the blade to
a depth of 2.6 mm (Fig. 7/2). Pieces of semi-precious stone were inserted
and fixed in them.
The exact original length of the dagger is unknown as the artifact
was discovered with the handle broken. The blade measured along the
curve is 24 cm long, and the handle is missing 1-2 cm. When restoring the
artifact, the average length of the handle of this kind of weapon was taken
into account, so the reconstruction resulted in a length of 33 cm, of which

10 cm are the restored handle (an average of handles of this kind), which
must have been that of the original artifact, with a possible difference of a
few millimeters. The maximum thickness of the blade, triangular in section,
is 4.1 mm, and the maximum width 3.4 cm, suggesting a robust, resistant
weapon.
5. Discussions
21
The identification of the semi-precious stone was made visually, based on the obvious
characteristics; the dagger will be analyzed metallographically and petrographically in
order to confirm or refute the preliminary conclusions presented here, but also to try to
identify the deposit or the area of origin of the quarry from which the stone used originates.
22
Without necessarily being directly related to the discovery, a deposit of jasper was
recently identified in the Brad area, Hunedoara County (information arch. M. Simion,
National Museum of History of Romania, to whom we thank for the kindness).

Basically, a form of chalcedony that belongs to the class of oxides (silicon dioxide –
SiO2) with a matte, glassy appearance, usually with numerous impurities, especially iron
compounds, which resulted in an exuberant variety, which made rigorous classifications
substantially more difficult. The average hardness is between 6.5-7.
64 Cătălin Borangic, Călin Ghemiș, Ștefan Lipot
About the reason behind the jasper inlay, we can only speculate to
some extent. Of course, the decoration thus obtained particularized and
enhanced the effective and symbolic value of the weapon. The one used in
this case was red jasper (also known as bloodstone) which has a naturally
polished appearance and is colored with shades of red, which become even
more obvious in contact with water.
Undoubtedly, these characteristics led, in Antiquity, to a wide use
and to the crediting of jasper with magical properties, being worn, in
various mounts, as amulets 24.
The second particularity is given by the area where the artifact was
discovered. Looking at the distribution map of artifacts of this type (Fig. 2),
including the development and dispersion of the cultural model that
contained them (Fig. 1), we can outline the “population” of new regions,
without these presences necessarily implying the correct chronology
contained.
In accordance with the evolution of the Padea-Panagjurski Kolonii
phenomenon, initially reported in the northern Balkans, and the progressive
stage of research, the dispersion crossed the Danube, starting from the
northwest of present-day Bulgaria. In the north of the river, namely in
Oltenia, numerous discoveries were reported (mainly graves, but also
isolated discoveries). Other discoveries, reduced in number, were initially
identified in western Muntenia, then in southeastern Transylvania, in the
fertile valley of the Middle Mureș (Fig. 1/1).
For several decades, the research, or rather, the identification of
new discoveries of this type stagnated, so that the general picture was
interpreted as a movement on the left bank of the Danube of some warrior
clans, from which a group broke off and entered, through the Carpathian
passes, in Transylvania, where they eliminated the Celtic domination 25.
The archaeological discoveries at Mala Kopanya (Ukraine) 26 and
then the increasingly frequent metal detections that revealed PPK-specific
inventories in the Curvature Carpathians and in the rest of Transylvania
resized the extent that the cultural model in question had in reality and
constantly revived the subject in the academic environments.
One of the arid areas so far, from this point of view, was the
northwestern region of Romania, where PPK-type discoveries were almost

Except for the area of the Crișul Alb Basin, respectively the Zărand depression, in 1980,
the late Al. Sășianu registered no less than 22 Dacian silver treasures, to which were added
a number of 24 random discoveries (cf. Sășianu 1980: 28). The last four years have led to
the enrichment of the registry of discoveries with new treasures, namely those from Cetea,
Peștiș - Valea Morii (unpublished researches C. Găzdac, C. Ghemiș), Peștiș Osoi
(unpublished researches C. Ghemiș, S. Bulzan), Ghighișeni (field researches C. Ghemiș),
Vadu Crișului- Măgura or Uileacu de Criș (researches C. Toma), made with the metal
detectors, doubled by archaeological researches. More than 25 other treasures were
discovered within Sălaj county, partly through archaeological research, partly by chance
discoveries (Pop 2008; passim) to which are added 4-5 treasures discovered with the metal
detectors. Taken together, the amount of Dacian silver discovered within the radius of the
two counties is somewhere around 20 % of the amount of silver discovered in Pre-Roman
Dacia.
28
The approximately 100 discoveries containing Dacian materials (settlements, graves,
ceramics, iron artifacts, ornaments, etc.) from the eastern half of present-day Hungary are

Salt was vital for the communities living in the Middle Danube basin, which was almost
completely devoid of this mineral. Not only the Celts extended their domination to
Transylvania pushed by this necessity, but also, later in the Middle Ages, the Bulgarians,
Avars, Pechenegs and Hungarians, both mounted warriors and owners of large studs and
herds, ruled and exploited one by one the Transylvanian salt pans.
33
The prosperity of the Sălaj Depression, at least for the Dacian era, is visible in the
numerous silver hoards discovered in this area, which functioned as a buffer or connecting
zone between the north and the center of the Dacian Kingdom.

recently discovered at Cetea (Fig. 8/1) and Vadu Crișului (Fig. 8/2) 34 and
the grave of a horseman discovered in Bălnaca, which contains in the
funeral inventory, among others, a Thracian-type bit 35, all in Bihor county.
To these artifacts are added the Thracian-type bits, complete or
fragmented, coming from Meseșenii de Sus, Sălaj 36. The curved dagger
sheath discovered on Măgura Moigradului, Sălaj County, can also be
inventoried in this register 37.
All these artifacts reconstruct the profile of local warriors connected
to the realities of the rest of the territory inhabited by the Dacians, from
where the local leaders took over ideologies, manufacturing technologies,
fighting techniques.
However, discoveries associated with the elite are, for now, still
numerically reduced, maintaining the hoards as the main indicator. Thus,
the discovery of the curved dagger from Sighiștel is, at this moment, the
most obvious trace of the presence of an aristocratic warrior in the region.

unknown and they seem to have ended up in private collections 38. Their
importance remains statistical and, with the caution given by the fragility
of the data obtained, chorological.
Returning to the northwestern area of Romania, the weapons
discovered here, even if numerically modest, for now, respond to an
otherwise very simple reality. No one could collect and store such a
quantity of precious metal without being able to defend it. The presence of
some military elites in the region, relatively assumed until this moment,
becomes a certainty through the discovery of the sica-type dagger from
Sighiștel. This artifact attests, this time directly, to the presence, at a given
time, of a powerful military leader in the region.
Unfortunately, the context of the artifact gives us no more
information than the dagger itself and the owner’s association, in one form
or another, with the Dacian warrior elites in general.
Unfortunately, the context does not offer us more data about the
reasons and dynamics of the presence of this warrior. From preliminary
observations, the weapon appears to have been deposited on the ground for
one reason or another. Just as well, it could have been lost in a dynamic
moment – such as a movement/retreat or a battle – moment completed in
such a way that the weapon could not be recovered. The number of
arrowheads discovered in the immediate vicinity suggests and supports this
scenario, although an atypical ritual deposition cannot be entirely ruled out.
We do not know of any nearby point that may have functioned as a
residential center, so the artifact appears to us as isolated and more difficult
to associate undoubtedly with the area.
It must be emphasized again that the dagger is far from a common
item even among this type of weapons, exceptional by definition. The
quality of the execution and the particularities which it presents strongly

provided by the restorers who handled the artifacts was that the items came from
southwestern Ukraine. It should be noted that one of the weapons (Fig. 8/5-6) has
morphological and ornamental analogies with the daggers from Transylvania and Oltenia
and not with those from the nearest center of power at Mala Kopanya (where the
decoration of the blades is reduced to the grooves on the blades, not very elegantly
executed either (Kotigoroshko 2015: 311; Fig. 30), if we are to believe the scant
information about the discovery place of the artifacts meteorically presented in the public
space.
