Istoria busolei

Busola sau compasul este un instrument de navigație utilizat


pentru determinarea direcției relativ la polii magnetici
ai Pământului. Cadranul busolei prezintă Polul Nord și Polul
Sud magnetic, precum și direcțiile intermediare.

Din punct de vedere istoric, originea busolei este incertă.


Chinezii obișnuiau să folosească o
piatră magnetică așezată pe o trestie
care plutind pe apa unui bazin îi ajuta
să se orienteze pe spațiul terestru.
Dar, este greu de spus dacă utilizarea
busolei s-a făcut încă din secolul al
III-lea î.Hr. Mai târziu apar formele de
busole mai specializate.
În Perioada Marilor descoperiri geografice portughezii au
perfecționat busola. Alexander Neckam un savant englez
menționează busola pentru prima oară prin secolul XII în Europa,
fiind adusă în anul 1190 de arabi. Forma busolei de azi este
menționată prin secolul al XIII-lea probabil de un navigator italian
din Amalfi, unde în port se găsește statuia lui Flavio Gioia, declarat
„descoperitor al busolei”.

În anul 1483 Ferrante a avut ideea de a atașa acestui ac o


roză cu inițialele numelor vânturilor ce suflau în sectorul respectiv.
Acesta era compasul.

După anul 1536 aceste inițiale au fost înlocuite cu punctele


cardinale: nord, sud, est și vest. În anul 1873 fizicianul englez
William Thompson, mai tarziu Lord Kelvin au perfecționat compasul
astfel încat măsurătorile se realizau cu mult mai multă precizie.
