The history of Hadmbu Monastery is a history of sorrow and joy, with lot of
devastation and death, but with the continuous help from Virgin Mary.
Hadmbus hermitage was built in 1659 by the Greek nobleman Iani
Hadmbu. He accepted from prince Gheorghe Ghica a land on Iais Forest,
on the High Hill. The nobleman accepted this property in order to renew an
ancient wooden church, from 15th century.
The monastery, wearing the name of its founder, is a fortified, defensiv
monastic complex, with a small church surrounded by thick quarry stone
walls, with the shape a fort, imperative building af those times, when Turks
and Tartars invaded these lands, plundering the monasteries.
Several generations of Greek monks lived here, until 1863, when
monasteries estate secularizing law was issued and the monks had to leave
the monastery.
The holy place was re-peopled in 1937, by the will of the abbot Iov Mazilu,
with the blessing of the Patriarch Miron Cristea. The monastery had a
flourishing time, until 1960, when was done away with it by the communist
authorities.
The following period of time the holy place crumbled, the walls caved in, the
weeds and trees slowly invaded the alleys and the walls.
The monastic life resurrects in 1990, under the guidence of the Abbot
Nicodim Gheorghi.
The monastery is a representative monument for the moldavian architecture
of the XVII th century. Monasterys church, protected by Vigin Mary , is small
and and has a mixed plane, being characterized by succesive defensive
arrangements.
A new church protected by The Holy Shroud Of Virgin Mary was built, floored
with marble from Ruschia, and hallowed in 2008.
