NUMERALUL

1. Numeralul cardinal

Numeralul cardinal (The Cardinal Numeral) exprimă o cifră sau numărul obiectclor.
Numerele cardinale de la 1 la 12 în limba engleza sunt urmatoarele:

0 – zero   (zero, null)

1 – one   (unu)
2 – two   (doi)
3 – three   (trei)
4 – four   (patru)
5 – five   (cinci)
6 – six   (sase)
7 – seven   (sapte)
8 – eight   (opt)
9 – nine   (noua)
10 – ten   (zece)
11 – eleven   (unsprezece)
12 – twelve   (doisprezece)

- Intre 13 si 19 numerele se compun prin adaugarea terminatiei "-teen" la numerele 3-9.

(Numeralele 13 si 15 prezinta deosebiri ortografice si de pronuntie fata de numeralele 3 si 5 de la
care sau format)

13 – thirteen   (treisprezece)
14 – fourteen   (patrusprezece)
15 – fifteen   (cincisprezece)
16 – sixteen   (saisprezece)
17 – seventeen   (saptesprezece)
18 – eighteen   (optsprezece)
19 – nineteen   (nouasprezece)

Zecile (20-90) se formeaza de la numerele 2-9 la care se adauga terminatia "-ty" (cu deosebiri
ortografice la numerele 20, 30, 40 si 50).
20 – twenty   (douazeci)
30 – thirty   (treizeci)
40 – forty   (patruzeci)
50 – fifty   (cincizeci)
60 – sixty   (saizeci)
70 – seventy   (saptezeci)
80 – eighty   (optzeci)
90 – ninety   (nouazeci)

- Numele zecilor se leaga de unitati direct, cu ajutorul unei liniute de unire:

21 – twenty-one   (douazeci si unu)
35 – thirty-five   (treizeci si cinci)

68 - sixty-eight   (saizeci si opt)

79 – seventy-nine   (saptezeci si noua)
89 - eighty-nine   (optzeci si noua)

Sutele se formeaza adaugand dupa numar cuvantul "hundred", iar miile se formeaza adaugand
cuvantul "thousand".
100 – one hundred   (o suta)
700 – seven hundred   (sapte sute)
1000 - one thousand   (o mie)
3000 – three thousand   (trei mii)

Numeralele care denumesc sute, mii sau milioane sunt legate prin "and" de cele care denumesc
zeci si unitati.
115 - a/one hundred and fifteen
735 - seven hundred and thirty-five
3008 - three thousand and eight

2. Numeralul ordinal

Numeralul ordinal (The Ordinal Numeral), numerele ordinale, exprimă ordinea obiectelor sau
locul unui obiect într-o seris. In general, se formează prin adăugarea terminatiei -th, la numeralul
cardinal, cu exceptia primelor trei: first (primul, prima), second (al doilea, a doua) si third (al
treilea, a treia).
- Cateva numerale isi schimba ortografia inaintea adaugarii terminatiei "-th".
      Ex.: fifth (al cincilea, a cincea), eighth (al optulea, a opta), ninth (al noulea, a noua), si altele
la fel.

- La numeralele compuse, numai ultimul numar primeste terminatia "-th".

      Ex.: twenty-seventh (al douăzeci şi şaptelea, a douăzeci şi şaptea), two hundred and thirty-
sixth (două sute treizeci
şi şaselea)
- Numeralele ordinale cuprinzând cuvintele "hundred", "thousand", "million" pot fi precedate
numai de one, nu si de a, iar articolul hotarât (the) poate fi omis: one hundred and thirty-second
(al o suta treizeci si doilea).

- Abrevierea numeralelor ordinale (forma lor prescurtata) se face prin adaugarea ultimelor doua
litere la cifra.
      Ex.: 1st (first), 2nd (second), 3rd (third), 8th (eighth), 21st (twenty-first).

- La zeci, terminatia "-ty" devine -tieth.

      Ex.: twentieth, thirtieth, fortieth, fiftieth, sixtieth, seventieth, eightieth, ninetieth.
