The efficacy of a 2-month treatment with oral colostrum in the prevention of flu episodes compared with antiinfluenza
vaccination was evaluated. Groups included healthy subjects without prophylaxis and those receiving both vaccination and
colostrum. After 3 months of follow-up, the number of days with flu was 3 times higher in the non-colostrum subjects. The
colostrum group had 13 episodes versus 14 in the colostrum + vaccination group, 41 in the group without prophylaxis, and 57 in
nontreated subjects. Part 2 of the study had a similar protocol with 65 very high-risk cardiovascular subjects, all of whom had
prophylaxis. The incidence of complications and hospital admission was higher in the group that received only a vaccination
compared with the colostrum groups. Colostrum, both in healthy subjects and high-risk cardiovascular patients, is at least
3 times more effective than vaccination to prevent flu and is very cost-effective.

Passive immunisation of children with bovine colostrum containing antibodies to human rotavirus.

Gastroenterology Unit, Adelaide Medical Centre for Women and Children, South Australia.
The efficacy of a 10-day course of bovine colostrum with high antibody titre against the four known human rotavirus serotypes
in protecting children against rotavirus infection was examined in patients admitted to hospital. Children aged 3 to 15 months
were blocked in pairs according to ward accommodation (ie, isolation or open area). Each block contained 1 treated and 1
control child. The allocation to treatment or control (an artificial infant formula) was randomised. 9 of 65 control children but
none of 55 treated children acquired rotavirus infection during the treatment period (p less than 0.001). The importance of
protecting against rotavirus infection was highlighted by the fact that parents of symptomatic rotavirus-positive children sought
medical attention seven times more often than did parents of symptomatic rotavirus-negative children (p less than 0.05).
PIP: One of the main reasons for hospital admission of infants and young children is infectious diarrhea usually caused by a
rotavirus infection. Infants can also acquire rotavirus in hospital neonatal and pediatric wards; the infection can also be
transmitted to adult members of the family. The most protection against rotavirus is the presence of an antibody in the lumen of
the small intestine. However, both adults and children can be immunized against rotavirus through the ingestion of an antibody
containing a modified rotavirus. A study was conducted on 120 children, aged 3 - 15 months. The aim of the study was to
produce a preparation of bovine colostrum with a high antibody titre against the 4 known human rotavirus. 65 of the children
were placed in a control group, while the remaining 55 were placed in a treatment group. A colostrum was produced by
introducing a vaccine containing all 4 human rotavirus into 25 pregnant Freisian cows. The colostrum was then administered to
the children, orally. Stool specimens were collected before admission, during the study and after discharge. The result of the
study are as follows: 14% of the control group (9 of 65) acquired rotavirus during the study; 8 of the 9 patients probably
acquired the infection on admission to the hospital. None of the treatment group were infected.

PURPOSE: The aim of this experiment was to investigate the influence of low dose bovine colostrum supplementation on
exercise performance in cyclists over a 10 week period that included 5 days of high intensity training (HIT). METHODS: Over
7 days of preliminary testing, 29 highly trained male road cyclists completed a VO(2max) test (in which their ventilatory
threshold was estimated), a time to fatigue test at 110% of ventilatory threshold, and a 40 km time trial (TT40). Cyclists were
then assigned to either a supplement (n = 14, 10 g/day bovine colostrum protein concentrate (CPC)) or a placebo group (n = 15,
10 g/day whey protein) and resumed their normal training. Following 5 weeks of supplementation, the cyclists returned to the
laboratory to complete a second series of performance testing (week 7). They then underwent five consecutive days of HIT
(week 8) followed by a further series of performance tests (week 9). RESULTS: The influence of bovine CPC on TT40
performance during normal training was unclear (week 7: 1+/-3.1%, week 9: 0.1+/-2.1%; mean+/-90% confidence limits).
However, at the end of the HIT period, bovine CPC supplementation, compared to the placebo, elicited a 1.9+/-2.2%
improvement from baseline in TT40 performance and a 2.3+/-6.0% increase in time trial intensity (% VO(2max)), and
maintained TT40 heart rate (2.5+/-3.7%). In addition, bovine CPC supplementation prevented a decrease in ventilatory threshold
following the HIT period (4.6+/-4.6%). CONCLUSION: Low dose bovine CPC supplementation elicited improvements in
TT40 performance during an HIT period and maintained ventilatory threshold following five consecutive days of HIT.

Colostrinin: a proline-rich polypeptide (PRP) complex isolated from ovine colostrum for treatment of Alzheimer's
disease. A double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

A proline-rich polypeptide (PRP) complex, subsequently called Colostrinin, was isolated from ovine colostrum. The complex
showed immunomodulatory properties in mice, rats, and chickens, inducing maturation and differentiation of thymocytes. It was
recently found that Colostrinin is a cytokine-like factor that acts as an inducer of interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) and other
cytokines in human peripheral blood and cord blood leukocyte cultures and has psycho-immuno-enhancing activity in
volunteers. These observations prompted us to study the effect of Colostrinin on patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Forty
six AD patients were divided into 3 groups and randomly assigned to receive orally either Colostrinin (100 microg per tablet,
every second day), commercially available bioorganic selenium (100 microg selenium per tablet, every second day) or placebo
tablets. One cycle of the treatment lasted 3 weeks and was separated from the next cycle by a 2 week hiatus. Each patient
received 10 cycles of treatment during the year of the clinical trial. Outcomes were assessed by psychiatrists blinded to the
treatment assignment. Eight of the 15 AD patients treated with Colostrinin improved and in the 7 others the disease had
stabilized. In contrast, none of the 31 patients from the selenium or placebo groups with similar mild or moderate AD
improved. The administration of selenium promoted stabilization in 13 of the 15 patients, whereas in the placebo group only 8
of the 16 patients were stabilized at the 12 month trials end-evaluation. Colostrinin was found to be a remarkably safe drug.
Mild and transient effects were anxiety, stimulation, insomnia, and tiredness. The results are very encouraging and deserve
further research. PMID: 10608295 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]complex in AD patients.

„Opt din cei 15 pacienţi suferinzi de Alzheimer au manifestat îmbunătăţirea sănătăţii lor cu ajutorul

cei 31 de pacienţi, care proveneau din grupul unde fusese administrat pseudomedicamentul, nu a
prezentat vreo îmbunătăţire”.
