Numeralul cardinal

Numeralul cardinal (The Cardinal Numeral) exprim o cifr sau numrul obiectelor.
Numerele cardinale de la 1 la 12 n limba engleza sunt urmtoarele:

0 zero
1 one
2 two
3 three
4 four
5 five
6 six
7 seven
8 eight
9 nine
10 ten
11 eleven
12 twelve
- ntre 13 i 19 numerele se compun prin adugarea terminaiei "-teen" la numerele 3-9.
(Numeralele 13 i 15 prezint deosebiri ortografice i de pronunie fa de numeralele 3 i 5
de la care s-au format)

15 fifteen
16 sixteen
17 seventeen
18 eighteen
19 nineteen
- Zecile (20-90) se formeaz de la numerele 2-9 la care se adaug terminaia "-ty" (cu
deosebiri ortografice la numerele 20, 30, 40 i 50).

Numele zecilor la plural: twenties, thirties, forties, fifties etc., precedate de articolul "the" sau
alt determinant, sunt folosite pentru a exprima o perioad sau vrsta:
The literature of the thirties. - Literatura anilor `30.
She was a good-looking woman in her forties. - Era o femeie frumoasa ntre 40 si 50 de ani.
- Numele zecilor se leag de uniti direct, cu ajutorul unei liniue de unire:

89 - eighty-nine
- Sutele se formeaz adugnd dup numr cuvntul "hundred", iar miile se formeaz
adugnd cuvntul "thousand".
100 one hundred
700 seven hundred
1000 - one thousand
3000 three thousand
- Numeralele care denumesc sute, mii sau milioane sunt legate prin "and" de cele care
denumesc zeci i uniti.
115 - a/one hundred and fifteen
735 - seven hundred and thirty-five
3008 - three thousand and eight
- Atunci cnd numerele denumind zecile, sutele, miile, milioanele sunt necunoscute, acestea
apar la form de plural: tens (zeci), hundreds (sute), thousands (mii), millions (milioane).

n limba englez, cuvntul care definete miliardul este "billion".

- Cifra zero se poate citi : zero, oh, nil, nothing sau love.
zero - n matematic si indicarea temperaturii
oh - la numerele de telefon
nil si nothing - pentru exprimarea scorului la fotbal
love - n tennis

2. Numeralul ordinal

Numeralul ordinal (The Ordinal Numeral), numerele ordinale, exprim ordinea obiectelor
sau locul unui obiect ntr-o serie. n general, se formeaz prin adugarea terminatiei -th, la
numeralul cardinal, cu excepia primelor trei: first (primul, prima), second (al doilea, a doua)
i third (al treilea, a treia).
- Cteva numerale i schimb ortografia naintea adugrii terminaiei "-th".
Ex.: fifth (al cincilea, a cincea), eighth (al optulea, a opta), ninth (al noulea, a noua), i
altele la fel.

- La numeralele compuse, numai ultimul numr primete terminaia "-th".

Ex.: twenty-seventh (al douzeci i aptelea, a douzeci i aptea), two hundred and
thirty-sixth (dou sute treizeci
i aselea)
- Numeralele ordinale cuprinznd cuvintele "hundred", "thousand", "million" pot fi precedate
numai de one, nu i de a, iar articolul hotrt (the) poate fi omis: one hundred and thirty-
second (al o suta treizeci si doilea).
- Abrevierea numeralelor ordinale (forma lor prescurtat) se face prin adugarea ultimelor
dou litere la cifr.
Ex.: 1st (first), 2nd (second), 3rd (third), 8th (eighth), 21st (twenty-first).
- La zeci, terminaia "-ty" devine -tieth.
Ex.: twentieth, thirtieth, fortieth, fiftieth, sixtieth, seventieth, eightieth, ninetieth.
- n general, numeralul ordinal este nsoit de articolul the.
