În albumul Conace și pensiuni din România 2, elementul hotărâtor e reconstituirea, prin dialogul naturii cu

oamenii locului, a unui peisaj cultural care evocă distinct un relief, o floră, o istorie sau o etnie și care dă
imaginației iluzia de a fi altundeva, altcândva, altcineva. Găzduit cu toate onorurile la conac, sau primit cu
inima deschisă în curtea unui gospodar, turistul nu mai este tratat ca un client, ci ca un oaspete.
Cu toate rigorile impuse de spațiul tipografic, pe lângă poveștile caselor și-au mai făcut loc, pe ici, pe colo, și
câteva din poveștile oamenilor. Cam scurte și cam puține, față de cât ar fi meritat. Le puteți afla, depănate pe
îndelete, chiar de la ei; dar pentru asta trebuie făcut un drum până acolo.

In the album Manors an Guesthouses from Romania 2 the deciding element is the reconstitution – through
the dialogue between the nature of the place and its people – of a cultural landscape that distinctly evokes a
landscape, a flora, a history or an ethnic group, and creates the illusion of being somewhere else, sometime
else, someone else. Hosted with all due honor inside a mansion, or welcomed with an open heart inside a rural
household, the tourist is no longer treated as a customer, but as a guest.
With all the rigors imposed by the typographic space, next to the stories of the houses, the stories of the people
also pushed their way, here and there, into the pages of this book. Too few and too short compared to what
they deserve. Of course, you can hear these stories told properly right from the source. But, in order to do that,
you’ll have to go over there yourselves.

Home with the Transylvanian Saxons
E uimitor cât de simple (sau, ca să spunem lucrurilor
pe nume: anoste) sunt fațadele caselor săsești și ce
senzație de confort degajă interioarele. Acest para-
dox are o dublă explicație. Cu puține excepții, ele nu
sunt opera unor meșteri specializați. La construcția
casei erau chemați să pună mâna toți membrii unei
vecinătăți (Nachbarschaften), formată din 20-30 de
familii ce locuiau pe aceeași stradă sau pe ulițe înve-
cinate. Iar pe de altă parte, sașii erau renumiți pentru
spiritul lor practic, pentru hărnicie și eficiență.
Pentru cele de mai sus, un bun exemplu este casa
Folberth, numită așa după ultimii ei proprietari sași. Pe
fațadele de la stradă, lipsite de orice ornament, obloa-
nele de lemn ocrotesc ferestrele de intemperii și de
intruși. În curte, foișorul cu coloane pătrate sfidează
toate dogmele arhitecturii. Dar să pășim înăuntru:
Largi, luminate de ferestrele generoase și curate
ca un pahar, încăperile emană simplitate și cumpă-
tare. Lemnăria solidă a tavanului face pandant cu
podeaua, pe care o putem numi, cu un cuvânt pe
cale de dispariție, dușumea. Paturi, dulapuri și lavițe,
deși masive, nu umplu spațiul, ci mai degrabă scot în
evidență dimensiunile generoase ale camerei. Sunt
mobile trainice, făcute să slujească mai multe gene-
rații. Florile de pe smalțul sobei și de pe spătarul ban-
chetei de alături sunt neamuri mai vechi ale celor din
glastre, culese chiar acum din grădină. Și mai sunt
câteva, brodate cu acul pe tișlaifărele agățate în pe-
rete, o adevărată colecție de învățături și îndemnuri,
turnate în rime candide.

It is amazing how simple (or, to be blunt – boring)
are the façades of the houses of the Transylvanian
Saxons and how, by contrast the interiors create such
a feeling of comfort. This paradox has a double ex-
planation. With few exceptions, these houses were
not built by professional builders. In fact, the process
of building a house often involved all the members
of a community (Nachbarschaften) made up of 20-
30 families that lived on the same street or on neigh-
boring streets. On the other hand, the Transylvanian
Saxons are renowned for their practical sense, indus-
triousness and efficiency.
The Folberth House, named after its last owners, pro-
vides a good example of this. On the street façades,
devoid of any ornament, the wooden shutters pro-
tect the windows from the elements, as well as from
intruders. In the yard, the gazebo with its square co­
lumns defies all rules of architecture. But let us step
inside: Spacious, lit by windows that are generous
and clear as a drinking glass, the rooms exude sim-
plicity and balance. The solid woodwork of the ceil-
ing mirrors that of the floors, made from solid boards.
The beds, cupboards and benches, while sturdy,
do not fill up the space, and instead emphasize the
generous size of the rooms. This is durable furniture,
made to serve many generations. The flowers that
can be seen on the stove enamel and on the back-
rest of the bench next to it are old relatives of the
ones in the vases, freshly picked from the garden.
And there are other flowers, embroidered on the wall
hangings – a genuine collection of teachings and ad-
vice, written down in candid rhymes.

Moments of Peace
Din 1545, de când reforma luterană a pătruns în
Transilvania, în biserica din Criț au oficiat peste 30 de
preoți. Unul dintre aceștia, Johannes Traugott Kraus,
a ridicat în 1843 o nouă casă parohială pe locul con-
sacrat din vecinătatea bisericii. Numele său e înscris
acum pe fațadă. După 1990, când sașii au emigrat
masiv în Germania, Casa Parohială s-a deteriorat
considerabil. În 2010 a fost achiziționată de Fundația
Michael Schmidt și reconstituită, pe baza planurilor
originale, cu adaptările impuse de noua sa destinație.
La parterul cu înfățișare de beci, sub bolțile de că-
rămidă, a fost amenajat un restaurant cu specific
săsesc. La etaj și la mansardă sunt mai multe
unități de cazare în stilul locuințelor săsești, păstrând
în același timp confortul zilelor noastre.
Camerele poartă numele unor sași transilvăneni de
vrednică memorie: Johannes Honterus, Samuel von
Brukenthal, Stephan Ludwig Roth, Franz Binder, Carl
Wolff, Anna Schuller, Hermann Oberth și, desigur,
Johannes Kraus.
Căsuța netencuită din spatele casei poartă numele
doamnei Sofia Folberth, născută în Criț cu aproa-
pe un secol în urmă. În ciuda vicisitudinilor de care
vremea și mai ales vremurile nu au scutit-o, an de
an, cu entuziasm și tenacitate, bate în fiecare pri-
măvară drumul din Germania până în satul natal
pentru a transmite, cu har și pasiune, valorile morale și
frumoasele tradiții ale sașilor de odinioară.

Since 1545, when the Lutheran Reformation reached
Transylvania, over 30 priests officiated in the Criț
church. One of them, Johannes Traugott Kraus, built,
in 1843, a new rectory on the consecrated site near
the church. Today, the house façade bears his name.
Following the massive migration of the Transylvanian
Saxons in the 1990s, the parish house fell into ruin.
The Michael Schmidt Foundation bought the house
in 2010, it rebuilt it based on the original plans and
adapted it to its new destination.
On the cellar-like ground floor, beneath the brick
vaults, there is a restaurant which serves Transylva-
nian Saxon dishes. The upper floor and the attic in-
clude several guestrooms in the style of Transylvanian
Saxon homes, traditional but fully equipped to today’s
expectation of a sophisticated traveler.
The rooms bear the names of reputable Transylvanian
Saxons: Johannes Honterus, Samuel von Brukenthal,
Stephan Ludwig Roth, Franz Binder, Carl Wolff, Anna
Schuller, Hermann Oberth and, of course, Johannes
Kraus.
The little cottage behind the house bears the name of
Ms. Sofia Folberth, born in Criț almost a century ago.
Despite having endured the hardships of time and
history, year after year, with enthusiasm and determi-
nation, Ms. Folberth travels to her home village every
spring all the way from Germany, with a clear purpose
of gracefully sharing with visitors the moral values and
beautiful traditions of the old Transylvanian Saxons.

Eclectic Charm
Aproape două veacuri au trecut de când Principele
sârb Efrem Obrenovici părăsea ţara natală pentru a
se stabili la margine de Urziceni şi pentru a cumpăra
de la urmaşii lui Alexandru Ipsilanti moşia Manasia.
În 1879, Ion Hagianoff cumpără domeniul Manasia
de la descendenţii lui Efrem Obrenovici, iar două-
zeci de ani mai târziu construieşte actualul conac,
după planurile unui arhitect elveţian şi amenajează
aici un vast parc, cu numeroase specii de arbori.
Ansamblul, care a reuşit să ofere aşezării un farmec
aparte, este confiscat imediat după instaurarea re-
gimului comunist, iar o epocă de mare însemnătate
culturală pentru întreaga zonă apune. Aflându-se
câteva decenii în proprietatea I.A.S. Borăneşti,
respectiv I.A.S. Urziceni şi găzduind o perioadă gră-
diniţa localităţii, conacul lui Hagianoff ajunge în anii
ce urmează Revoluţiei într-o stare de degradare
avansată şi necesită lucrări ample de consolidare şi
restaurare. După o lungă perioadă de uitare, în anul
2006, Ariadna Avram, acţionar unic al societăţii Dall
Arte, achiziţionează domeniul şi deschide astfel un
nou capitol în istoria locului, un capitol a cărei acţiu-
ne se concentrează în jurul respectului faţă de isto-
rie şi patrimoniu. Din punct de vedere arhitectural,
conacul eclectic construit în urmă cu mai bine de
un secol este alcătuit din subsol, parter, etaj şi pod,
având faţada principală încadrată de două corpuri
decroşate: unul spre nord, cu o siluetă elegantă şi
unul masiv către sud, ambele adăpostind scări de
acces către nivelurile superioare ale clădirii. Cu o
suprafaţă la sol extrem de generoasă, de 580 mp,
clădirea a fost construită în întregime din cărămidă,
având la origini plafoanele din lemn.

Nearly two centuries have passed since the Serbian
Prince Efrem Obrenovici left his home country in or-
der to settle at the edge of the town of Urziceni, where
he bought the Manasia estate from the des­cendants
of Alexandru Ipsilanti. In 1879, Ion Hagianoff bought
the Manasia estate from the descendants of Efrem
Obrenovici, and, twenty years later, built the mansion
that we see today, based on the plans of a Swiss ar-
chitect, and set up a vast park, with many species of
trees. This ensemble, that gave the place a unique
charm, was confiscated soon after the installation of
the Communist regime, marking the end of an era of
high cultural significance for the area.
After several decades of being owned by I.A.S.
Borăneşti, I.A.S. Urziceni respectively, during which
it housed, for a while, the town kindergarten,
Hagianoff’s mansion fell into decay after the Revo-
lution, requiring extensive reinforcement and resto-
ration works. After a long period of neglect, in 2006,
architect Ariadna Avram, sole shareholder of the
Dall Arte company, purchased the property and thus
opened a new chapter in the history of the place, a
chapter where the action revolves around a feeling
of deep respect for history and heritage. From an ar-
chitectural point of view, the eclectic mansion built
over a century ago is composed of a cellar, a ground
floor, an upper floor and an attic, with its main façade
framed by two wings – the elegant North wing and
the solid South wing – both of which contain stairs
to the upper floor and attic. With an extremely gene­
rous footprint of 580 square meters, the mansion
was built entirely of brick, and its original ceilings
were made of wood.
