1. Ce este o acțiune provocată?

The children watched cartoons. → Copiii s-au uitat la desene. (acțiune simplă)
The parents let the children watch cartoons. → Părinții i-au lăsat pe copii să se uite la
desene. (acțiune provocată)
Sarah lied to us. → Sarah ne-a mințit. (acțiune simplă)
Tom made Sarah lie to us. → Tom a făcut-o pe Sarah să ne mintă. (acțiune provocată)
I cut my hair yesterday. → M-am tuns (singură) ieri. (acțiune simplă)
I had my hair cut yesterday. → Am fost la tuns ieri. (acțiune provocată)
She bought a new dress. → Și-a cumpărat o rochie nouă. (acțiune simplă)
She got him to buy her a new dress. → L-a convins să-i cumpere o rochie nouă. (acțiune
provocată)
Atenție! Nu este obligatoriu ca cele patru verbe să fie cauzative, e.g. Tom made a
cake.

2. Schema de formare a propozițiilor

care conțin verbe cauzative
Subiect + Verb Cauzativ + Complement + Verb Principal (forma de bază sau de
infinitiv) + (…)
Tom made Sarah lie to us.

Subiectul este cel care provoacă acțiunea. Complementul este fie cel care efectuează
acțiunea, fie cel asupra căruia aceasta se răsfrânge.

În cel de al doilea caz, schema de formare este următoarea:

Subiect + Verb Cauzativ + Complement + Verb Principal (forma a III-a) + (…)

I had my hair cut yesterday.

3. Let, Make, Have, Get

Let
to let someone do something = a permite cuiva să facă ceva

My boss let me leave work earlier today.

His parents let him go to the party.
Will you let me use your personal computer?
I didn’t let the cat sleep on the couch.

Make
to make someone do something = a forța / obliga pe cineva să facă ceva

My parents always make me go on holiday with them.

John’s girlfriend made him wear this uncomfortable suit.
Did the security guard make him empty his pockets?
He didn’t make you cook him dinner.

Have
to have someone do something = a cere cuiva să facă ceva

Please have your secretary fax me the contract.

The teacher had the pupils do the assignment.
Can you have him clean the house this weekend?
You can’t have the shop assistant bring you another melon. It’s not her job.

Get
to get someone to do something = a convinge pe cineva să facă ceva

I got him to lend me his headset.

His parents got him to read the novel.
Is she trying to get her children to eat more vegetables?
She can’t get them to do more exercise.
Atenție! Let, make și have cer forma de bază a verbului principal (leave, go, fax), pe
când get cere forma de infinitiv (to lend).
