Participnd nemijlocit la procesul gndirii i

nemaifiind doar un mijloc de comunicare, limba a
determinat analizarea traducerii nu ca o problem
tehnic, ci ca una teoretic. Posibilitatea traducerii
crete o dat cu dezvoltarea coninutului logic al
limbilor, realiznd convergena dintre acestea.
Noiunea i judecata i identific pe oameni; metafora
i morfosintaxa i difereniaz. ns diversitatea
naional a morfosintaxelor este mereu depit de
identitatea universal a structurilor logice 12, pp. 87
88. Conservnd o experien istoric de lung durat,
limba nu-i poate dezvlui pe deplin bogia de
semnificaii numai prin logic, ci i prin cunoaterea
etnografiei poporului ce o vorbete. Astfel, limba nu
mpiedic, ci stimuleaz gndirea s urce de la
naional la universal (Ibidem). H. Jacquier consider
c dat fiind raportul dintre dou limbi diferite, n care
fiecare are propria atmosfer, ivit din materialele
sale sonore i din mbinrile lor, reiese imposibilitatea

practic a traducerii. La explicaia de mai sus se

adaug prezena simultan a sensurilor fiecrui
cuvnt, constelaia expresiilor ntemeiate pe acest
cuvnt i ornduirea tuturor acestor elemente n toate
contextele, reale sau posibile. Este necesar ca
traductorul s fie competent n dou culturi diferite
(fr s fie la jumtatea distanei dintre ele), avnd
cunotiinele i experiena a dou entiti care
evolueaz separat 1, p. 25. Se anuleaz astfel opinia
potrivit creia traducerea, ca i comunicarea ntre
diverse culturi, este iluzorie.
La L. Hjelmslev semnificantul este denumit plan
al expresiei, iar semnificatul plan al coninutului,
fiecare avnd o form i o substan. Fiecare limb i
traseaz linii de demarcaie proprii, att n substana
sonor (constituindu-i un inventar fonematic), ct i n

prin care acesta ar putea fi tradus; structurile
semiotice se pot studia, astfel, independent de
referenii lor, iar relaiile semnificante se pot descoperi
chiar n snul complexelor de semne 5, p. 46.
Limba, ca sistem semiotic, este alctuit, pe de
o parte, din uniti minimale

sens, un limbaj perfect nu trebuie s constituie un
deziderat. ns B. Russell este ncredinat, n cuvintele
de introducere la Tractatus, c Wittgenstein este
interesat de condiiile unui limbaj logic perfect nu
pentru c ar exista un limbaj logic perfect sau pentru
c nu ne credem pe noi nine capabili aici i acum de
a construi un astfel de limbaj, ci pentru c funcia
deplin a unui limbaj este de a avea o semnificaie i
c limbajul nu ndeplinete aceast funcie dect pe
msur ce ne apropiem de un limbaj ideal pe care-l
postulm p. 8. n acest sens, A. Pagliaro observ c
limba despre care vorbesc cei ce se ocup de logica
matematic nu este n realitate limba noastr, adic
limbajul fonic simplu 8, p. 309, iar noiunea de
propoziie elementar, ale crei substantive sunt nume
proprii identice cu obiectul pe care-l denumesc, nu
este o noiune a lingvisticii (Ibidem).

Prin analiz contrastiv se observ c

diferenierile semantice de la o limb la alta sunt
numeroase i variate. S lum, spre exemplu, situaiile
prezentate de J. Lyons. n englez, cuvntul grape
(strugure) este un substantiv numrabil (poate fi
pluralizat) Will you have some grapes ? (Vrei nite
struguri), n vreme ce Traube (n german) i
vinograd (n rus) sunt, la fel ca englezescul fruit
(fruct), substantive nenumrabile. Frukt (n rus) i
fruit (n francez) sunt, n schimb, numrabile 7, p.
317. Tot n englez, prin absena genului gramatical,
articolul i adjectivul sunt invariabile. Avem, astfel a
great lion (un leu mare) i a great lioness (o leoaic
mare). Limbile ugro-finice i turco-ttare sunt lipsite, n
schimb, de categoria genului. n finlandez, pronumele
personal de persoana a III-a are aceleai forme la
masculin i feminin: hn (el, ea). n maghiar, avem
vocabula (el, ea), n aceast limb adjectivul fiind,
i el, invariabil: szp fi (biat frumos) i szp
leny (fat frumoas) 3, p. 186. Spaniola face o
distincie semantic clar ntre unele pri ale corpului
uman i cele corespunztoare ale animalelor:

n japonez, derivatul englezescului milk
(lapte) este miruku, utilizat doar pentru a desemna
laptele conservat 6, p. 37. Necunoaterea tuturor
acestor particulariti semantice are ca efect traduceri

inacceptabile. De pild, englezescul friend (prieten)

acoper o arie extrem de mare de cunotine cu care o
persoan se ntlnete adesea, spre deosebire de
cuvntul Freund (din german), ce are o semnificaie
restrns la prieteni intimi, acceptai pe baza unei
ndelungi verificri. Toate celelalte accepii ale
cuvntului englezesc au corespondent n german pe
Bekannte (cunotine). Cuvntul englezesc library
(bibliotec), dei are aceeai origine (latinescul liber
carte) ca a lexemului spaniol libreria (magazin de
cri), observm c se deosebete ca sens, avnd,
totodat, drept corespondent pronumele it, fa de
cuvntul spaniol, ce poate fi nlocuit de pronumele
feminin ella 6, pp. 130132. Traducerea termenilor
saussurieni n german a ridicat o serie de probleme,
la nivel curent Sprache oscilnd ntre valorile de
langue i langage, iar Rede ntre cele de
langue, parole i discours, n timp ce, n
spaniol, lengua, lenguaje i habla corespund pe
deplin termenilor de langue, langage i parole. n
olandez, taal nseamn, n general, langue,
spraak langage i parole (ultima valoare
putnd fi redat i prin rede), n vreme ce, n
polonez, langue este redat prin termenul jezyk,
langage prin mowa i parole prin mowa
jednostkowa. Dar, n italian, cuvntul parola nu
corespunde franuzescului parole (vorbire), ci
cuvntului mot (cuvnt), aa c s-a preferat
pstrarea cuvntului original 9, pp. 334336.
Modelul
contrastiv,
alturat
demersului
etimologic, poate explicita aspectul formal al
cuvintelor i corespondenele dintre ele. Astfel,
cuvntul ghiocel este derivat din romnescul
ghioc, avndu-se n vedere forma. La francezi s-a
urmrit faptul c planta strpunge zpada, denumindo, n consecin, perce-neige. n englez, aceasta
este comparat cu o pictur de zpad

(snowdrop), iar n german, cu un clopoel de

zpad (Schneeglckchen) 3, p. 48.

n vietnamez, distincia dintre Am scris o scrisoare
i Am scris cteva scrisori poate fi lsat
neexprimat (prin absena categoriei gramaticale a
numrului).
n limba englez, dup cum observ J. Lyons,
exprimarea viitorului este, n egal msur, o
problem de mod i de timp. S urmrim:

Sensul inductiv se folosete pentru exprimarea
adevrurilor generale neancorate temporal (ce pot fi
dovedite inductiv), spre exemplu: Oil will float on
water (Uleiul plutete la suprafaa apei). Sensul
modal promisiv al lui shall se poate observa din
exemplul: You shall have your money by the end of
the week (Vei avea banii (garantez/promit asta) pn
la sfritul sptmnii) 7, p. 349. n spaniol,
construciile cu nume nsufleite se deosebesc de cele

cu substantive inanimate. Avem, de pild, La madre

ama a la hija (fiica), dar La madre ama el libro
(cartea). n prima propoziie, acuzativul este
precedat de prepoziia-morfem a. n rus, opoziia
animat-nonanimat se exprim cu ajutorul desinenelor:
On pozvl brta (El a chemat fratele), dar On
smtrit film (El vede filmul). Observm c n cazul
substantivelor nsufleite acuzativul folosete o
desinen identic cu a genitivului 11, p. 212.
Putem conchide, la sfritul acestui al doilea
capitol, c, pentru o traducere valorizant, este
necesar o anumit competen hermeneutic,
asociat unui profund demers de analiz contrastiv.
Dup cum observa Quintilian, n Institutio oratoria,
nu este dezirabil ca traducerea s fie doar parafrazare,
ct mai cu seam ntrecere i rivalitate n jurul
aceluiai neles.

Rolul interpretrii n procesul traducerii

Sintagma traducere bun echivaleaz, la

Tytler, cu receptarea i nelegerea unei opere traduse
la valoarea atribuit de vorbitorii limbii n care s-a scris
textul original. Apreciind c n nici un alt domeniu
supus criticii nu a existat o asemenea divergen de
opinii, Tytler formuleaz trei reguli generale ale
traducerii: I. Traducerea trebuie s ofere o
transpunere complet a tuturor ideilor prezentate n
lucrarea surs; II. Stilul i maniera de a scrie trebuie s
corespund celor din lucrarea original; III. Traducerea
trebuie s aib naturaleea unei compoziii originale 1.
Mult mai trziu, n 1965, s-a pus problema
intraductibilitii lingvistice, J.C. Catford 2 distingnd
ntre traducere, ce presupune nlocuirea (substituirea)
sensurilor din limba-surs cu sensurile din limba int,
i transferare, reprezentnd implantarea sensurilor din

limba-surs n limba-int. De altfel, Cicero avertizase,

n De optimo genere oratorum, c nu este necesar
redarea ad litteram, ci s se pstreze ntregi
originalitatea i fora cuvintelor. Reputatul lingvist
Georges Mounin consider c se poate traduce
aproape orice fraz, contraexemplele fiind doar
expresii traduse incorect3.
Este interesant, n contextul celor expuse mai
sus, maniera original de a traduce a criticului de film
D.I. Suchianu4, care a transpus n limba francez
aproape 40 de poeme eminesciene: Explicaia e c,
printr-o munc migloas, am tradus nu numai vorb
cu vorb, dar i sunet cu sunet. i v rog s m credei
c pentru asta a trebuit s iau aa, buctrete,
fiecare cuvnt. Cnd mi trebuia o rim, luam silabele
la rnd: cu b, cu c, cu d, cu s, cu dicionarul de rime,
cu dicionarul de sinonime pentru c dac nu era
cuvntul acela, poate era altul! O ntreag buctrie.

soluia pentru strofa aceea, pentru rima aceea. Aa
nct totdeauna am tiut s anulez caracterul plicticos,
neplcut, fastidios al operaiilor mrunte, de buctrie,
inerente oricrei munci5. Modificrile inerente ale
activitii gndirii sunt justificate n planul traducerii,
prin transpunerea acesteia, afirm Heidegger, n
spiritul altei limbi6. Necunoaterea subtilitilor
semantice poate determina, astfel, o nelegere
defectuoas a textului de tradus, ca n dialogul
prezentat de R. Jakobson7:
The sophomore (studentul) was plucked.
(Tufa a fost jumulit.)
But what is plucked?
(Dar ce nseamn asta, jumulit?)
Plucked is the same as fluncked.
(Jumulit nseamn acelai lucru ca i trntit.)

And fluncked?

Propoziiile de mai sus au o funcie strict
metalingual, ntruct transmit informaii numai
despre codul lexical englez. Frida Papadache traduce,
ntr-o manier savuroas, prin omonimii ce respect
spiritul ludic al originalului, dialogul dintre Plrier i
Rege (n Peripeiile Alisei n Lumea Oglinzii, de Lewis
Carroll):
The twinkling of what? said the King.
(Ce sclipea? ntreb Regele.)
It began with the tea, the Hatter replied.
(Cu ceai a nceput, rspunse Plrierul.)
Of course twinkling begins with a T! said the
King sharply.
(Totdeauna ncepi cu ce-ai! zise sever Regele.)

Putem observa c traducerea este o operaiune
dificil, care presupune competen hermeneutic,
precum i utilizarea unor dicionare adecvate. Nu se
poate traduce Shakespeare, de pild, cu un Concise
Oxford Dictionary, dar rezultatele ateptate apar
folosind o ediie adnotat i un Shakespeare Lexicon
(de Alexander Schmidt)8. Iat ct de diferite sunt
sensurile cuvintelor de altdat, n comparaie cu cele
de astzi, identice ca form:

Procesul traducerii reclam, ca atare, detaarea
de text, n sensul nlturrii prejudecilor privind
sensurile cuvintelor (sinonimele absolute sunt rariti);
o astfel de atitudine servete la clarificarea contextului
i la stilizarea frazelor n scopul dorit 9. De asemenea,
dup, A. Gramsci, traductibilitatea presupune c o
anumit faz a civilizaiei are o expresie fundamental
identic, chiar dac limbajul este istoricete diferit,
fiind posibil ntre expresiile unor faze diferite de
civilizaie, ntruct aceste faze sunt momente de
dezvoltare una dintr-alta i, prin urmare, se integreaz
pe rnd, sau dac o expresie dat poate fi tradus cu
termenii unei faze anterioare ale aceleiai civilizaii,
faz anterioar care este mai inteligibil dect limbajul
dat10. Recurena trebuie pstrat n traducere, altfel
efectul general al textului ar fi compromis o dat cu
nlocuirea unui element lexical printr-un sinonim.
Traducerea interpretativ are n vedere c un
text poate fi neles numai pe baza cunotinelor
extralingvistice. Cititorii, deinnd complemente
cognitive11, sunt ajutai de
112traductor, care reface
textul original n LT, s neleag textul. Procesul de
traducere presupune parcurgerea a trei etape: a) actul
de interpretare al traductorului, ce cuprinde analiza
textului original; traductorul-semiotician identific i
analizeaz nivelurile ierarhice ale textului de tradus,
interpreteaz i descoper structura intern a textului;
b) actul de transformare, ce presupune deverbalizarea
textului,
trstur
specific
traducerii
orale
(posibilitate de exprimare ce trebuie s sune firesc n

LT); c) actul de creaie, ce presupune stilizarea i

nuanarea textului tradus12. Orice traducere presupune
interpretare, iar aceasta din urm include schimbarea
codului, orict ar fi lipsit de constrngeri impuse de
sistemul lingvistic al originalului. Interpretarea este
practic pasul urmtor dup traducere (care ncearc s
stabileasc echivalenii lingvistici), pe care o
presupune,
urmrind
comunicarea
integral
a
sensului13.
Expunnd deschiderile aduse de problema
relaiei traducere-interpretare, cuvintele lui M.
Heidegger sunt elocvente: Orice traducere este n
sine o interpretare. Ea poart n fiina ei, fr a le da
glas, toate temeiurile, deschiderile i nivelele
interpretrii care au stat la originea ei, iar
interpretarea nu este la rndu-i dect mplinirea
traducerii care mai tace nc, a traducerii care nc nu
a ajuns la cuvntul menit s-i confere deplintate.
Potrivit esenei lor, interpretarea i traducerea sunt
unul i acelai lucru14.

ani, am tradus cartea
lui Swift n limba romn, avnd la

traduc substantivul prin buteni; i, cu totul ntmpltor, m-am
ntrebat de ce era nevoie de un voiaj att de lung pentru a ncrca
nite buteni. M-a lmurit dicionarul: dei log nseamn butean
i wood nseamn lemn, logwood este cu totul altceva i anume
