Modal verbs Must and Should

(Verbele modale Must și Should)

Verbul modal Must se folosește pentru a exprima în limba engleză:

1) o necesitate, uneori un ordin:

I must wash the dishes tonight- Trebuie să spăl vasele deseară.

You must write to your parents. - Trebuie să le scrii părinților tăi.

2) posibilitate, presupunere.

You must be tired. - Trebuie să fii obosit. (Probabil că ești obosit.)

She must be at home now. Trebuie să fie acasă acum.

Affirmative form Negative form

I must ( eu trebuie)
You must (tu trebuie)
He/she must (el/ea trebuie)
We must (noi trebuie)
You must (voi trebuie)
They must (ei/ ele trebuie)
I mustn’t (eu nu trebuie)
You mustn’t (tu nu trebuie)
He/ she mustn’t (el/ea nu trebuie)
We mustn’t (noi nu trebuie)
You mustn’t (voi nu trebuie)
They mustn’t( ei/ele nu trebuie)

Example:

Affirmative: Students must listen to the teacher.( Studenții trebuie să asculte profesorul).

Negative: Students mustn’t jump on the desks. (Studenții nu trebuie să sară pe bănci).
Verbul modal Should se folosește în limba engleză pentru:

- a exprima un sfat: You are sick, you should really go to a doctor- Ești bolnav, ar trebui să
mergi la doctor.

- a exprima o posibilitate: You should arrive before noon.- Ar trebui să ajungi înainte de
amiază.
- o obligație: I should be in the office by 7:00 AM- Ar trebui să fiu la birou la ora șapte
dimineața.
- a exprima ce e bine și ce e rău în anumite împrejurări: Nobody should drink and drive -
Nimeni nu ar trebui să bea și să conducă.

Affirmative form Negative form

I should( eu ar trebui) I shouldn’t ( eu nu ar trebui)

You should( tu ar trebui) You shouldn’t(tu nu ar trebui)

He/she should (el/ ea ar trebui) He/ she shouldn’t(el/ea nu ar trebui)

We should (noi ar trebuie) We shouldn’t (noi nu ar trebui)

You should (voi ar trebui) You shouldn’t (voi nu ar trebui)

They should ( ei/ele ar trebui) They shouldn’t (ei/ele nu ar trebui)

Example:
Affirmative: You should stay home- Ar trebui să stai acasă.
Negative: He shouldn’t write on the walls- El nu ar trebui să scrie pe pereți.
