Introducere
În această lecție vom învăța care sunt verbele modale, ce forme au și

când se folosesc. Verbele modale se folosesc des în limba engleză și au
forme specifice. Anumite verbe modale nu au forme la trecut și viitor,
dar există alte verbe care se folosesc în locul lor. Vom învăța care sunt
aceste substitute.
Verbele modale sunt verbe cu semnificație incompletă, care au sensul

de: a putea, a vrea, a se pricepe, a avea voie...
În limba engleză, ele au trei caracteristici importante:
cer să fie completate de un verb la infinitivul fără to,

au aceeași formă la toate persoanele,
ca să formeze negativul și interogativul nu folosesc auxiliarul to
do.
MUST este unul din verbele modale care arată existența unei obligații
(obligation). Aceasta este cel mai frecvent o obligație care vine de la
persoana întâi, așa-numita obligație interioară.
Exemple:
I must call my sister tonight. – Trebuie să o sun pe sora mea

diseară.
She must win the competition. – Ea trebuie să câștige concursul.
Construcția verbală HAVE TO are aceeași semnificație ca MUST.

Diferența este că HAVE TO arată o obligație care vine de la persoana
a doua, adică o obligație externă. Aceasta se referă în general la
regulamente și legi.

Exemple:
Children have to go to school. – Copiii trebuie să meargă la

școală.
You have to fill in this form to get a visa. – Trebuie să completați

acest formular pentru a obține viza.
In England you have to drive on the left. – În Marea Britanie

trebuie să conduceți mașina pe partea stângă.
All men have to wear a tie at work. – Toți bărbații trebuie să

poarte cravată la serviciu.
Verbul HAVE TO se folosește, de asemenea, în loc de verbul modal

MUST la timpurile trecut și viitor, deoarece MUST nu are forme pentru
acestea.
Exemple:
I had to leave the house at 4 because I had a meeting at 5. – A

trebuit să plec de acasă la 4 deoarece aveam o întâlnire la 5.
You didn't have to come if you didn't want to. – Nu trebuia să vii
dacă nu voiai.
I`ll have to find a better job. – Va trebui să găsesc un job mai bun.

Did you really have to do that? – Chiar trebuia să faci asta?
We had to work until 9 o’clock last night. – Aseară a trebuit să

lucrăm până la ora 9.
Însă, țineți cont că HAVE TO nu este verb modal.
MUSTN’T este forma negativă a verbului must și arată o interdicție

(prohibition).
Exemple:
You mustn't smoke in the classroom. – Nu aveți voie să fumați în

clasă.
We mustn't play with matches. – Nu avem voie să ne jucăm cu

chibrituri.
You mustn’t watch so much TV. – Nu ai voie să te uiți atât la

televizor.
CAN arată existența unei abilități (ability) în prezent, iar can't absența
abilității.

Exemple:
I can play the guitar. – Știu să cânt la chitară.
She can't drive a car. – Ea nu știe să conducă mașina.
COULD vorbește despre o abilitate care a existat odată în trecut. Spre

deosebire, COULDN’T arată absența abilității în trecut.
Exemple:
Michael could climb trees as a child. – Michael putea să se cațere

în pomi când era copil.
I couldn't read when I was 4. – Nu știam să citesc când aveam 4

ani.
Nadia could swim when she was 5 years old. – Nadia știa să
înoate când avea 5 ani.
Pentru a exprima o abilitate sau posibilitate existentă în trecut se mai

folosește și verbul be able to.
Exemplu:

I wasn't able to come yesterday. – Nu am putut să vin ieri.
BE ABLE TO se folosește și pentru viitor.
Exemplu:
I'll be able to come tomorrow. – O să pot să vin mâine.
CAN/CAN’T poate însemna și a avea/a nu avea permisiunea

(permission) de a face ceva.
Exemple:
You can leave the room. – Puteți pleca din cameră.
We can't vote when we are 16. – Nu putem vota la 16 ani.
SHOULD/SHOULDN’T (ar trebui / nu ar trebui) se folosește pentru a

oferi sfaturi, a face propuneri, sugestii (advice, suggestions).
Exemple:

Mary should go home. She has high temperature. – Mary ar

trebui să meargă acasă. Are temperatură mare.
You shouldn't walk alone by night. It is dangerous. – Nu ar

trebui să te plimbi singură noaptea. Este periculos.
MAY/MIGHT se folosește pentru a exprima probabilitatea (probability)

că ceva se va întâmpla. MIGHT exprimă o probabilitate mai mică că
acțiunea se va întâmpla.
Exemple:
It may rain. It is cloudy. – S-ar putea să plouă. Este înnorat.
It might rain. It is still sunny. – Slabe șanse să plouă. Încă este

însorit.
WOULD se folosește pentru situații inventate. Adesea se prescurtează

și se pronunță 'd.
Exemple:
Where would you go? – Unde vreți să mergeți?

I wouldn't go by plane. – Nu aș merge cu avionul.
I'd stay at some hotel. – Aș sta la un hotel.
Notă pentru teste de avansare:
