Intrusion of the European Pine Marten (Martes martes, Linnaeus 1758) in the Danube
Delta (Romania) and considerations regarding environmental consequences expected of this phenomenon
Abstract
e record of at least three new species of mammals, such as the European Beaver (Castor fiber Linnaeus 1758),
the Stone Marten — Martes foina (Erxleben 1773) and the European Pine Marten (Martes martes, Linnaeus, 1758),
the last two years brought positive changes in biodiversity of the Danube Delta. e European Pine Marten
is a characteristic woodland species that was first recorded in 2007 and captured in 2010 within the Danube
Delta. Unlike the literature, the habitat used here is not the characteristic deciduous or mixed-conifer forests to
alpine areas, but willow floodplain forests or mixed deciduous on the Letea Island. As a newly recorded species,
currently do not possess information about behavioral or its trophic regime in the area and thus its impact on
the level of deltaic biodiversity. Data from the other countries literature, enable us to make certain judgments in
this regard, but also raises the need to reconsider some information rooted in our cynegetics literature on this
predator interrelations with other taxa.
