Maria Tănase had a unique voice that enchanted anyone who listened to her music. Her
songs reflect the Romanian soul in its entirety. She lived in Bucharest and she loved life and
music with passion. She was a special artist who burnt until her very last moment.
Her mother, Ana Munteanu was from a Sibiu villge called Cârța, and her father was a
gardener from the Olt county. He loved singing and he would offer flowers to the singers he
listened to at folk performances. Maria inherited this talent from her father.
She was discovered by Harry Brauner, a famous writer and folklorist of those times. He
helped her start an artistic career. In 1934 she was hired at the „Cărăbuș” (Beetle) Theatre in
Bucharest. In 1935 she was already famous and then she recorded her first songs. It was the
moment when she attended the Royal Conservatory of Music and Dramatic Art.
At the age of 17 she was very disappointed in love so she took up smoking. But in 1938,
while she was in Paris, she met Constantin Brâncuși at an exhibition of folk art organized by the
sociologist Dimitrie Gusti. They fell in love instantly and Maria did not leave his sculpture
workship for two days, and this made Gusti very angry. Brâncuși was very impressed by her
music and passion, so he told her: "I can make a statue for every song of yours.” Although she
loved Brâncuși enormously, their love story lasted only one year, because, some people thought,
of the difference of age: he was 62, and Maria was 25.
Her artistic career was interrupted between 1940-1941, when the Fascist regim and the
Iron Guard broke the disks with her songs and did not let her perform on the stage. It was nor
her fault, but the people in power were against the Jewish inlellectuals that protected her and
supported her in career.
By that time she fell in love with a French journalist, Maurice Negre. He was charged
with espionage and imprisoned at Aiud. Maria spent all her money and sold all her jewelleries
to get him released. Later on, she wrote him in France asking for help to escape the communist
regim, but he did not answer. In 1950, she got married to a rich lawyer, Clery Sachelarie who
had been also her confident. In 1955, she was given a prize, here, in the country, and after she
died, she was awarded, in 1965, with "Le Grand Prix du Disque” by the Academy "Charles
Cros”, in Paris.
She was a very beautiful woman with a wonderful voice and she was courted by
important people of those times. (For instance, one day the Turkish governor Sulfikidar promised
her a life of luxury and a permanent job at Radio Ankara.) She died of lung cancer at the age of
49.

The Romanian language, Dacian and Latin heritage / Limba română, moștenirea
dacică și latină.
Romanian is a descendant of Latin as the Roman Empire ruled most part of the
territories of nowadays Romania.
Along the history, many people noted the similarities between Latin and
Romanian. Foreigners gave the name of Vlahi or Valahi (Wallachians) to the people who
inhabited this territory. This term seems to be of old Germanic origins. Most likely this
term is a derivative from the name of the Roman general Flacus.
More than 300 years ago, the great scholar Dimitrie Cantemir said the following
words about his people: "the Romanians in Dacia, who are nowadays Moldavians,
Wallachians and Transylvanians, are in their origins Romans from Italy brought to these
places by Trajan the Emperor."
The linguists define Romanian as being ”the Latin language spoken without
interruption in the Eastern part of the Roman Empire, including the Romanized
provinces (Dacia, South Pannonia, Dardania, Moesia) from the moment of penetration of
Latin into these provinces down to our days.
Romanian is not identical to Latin, but a very distinct language along with French,
Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Provençal, Rhaeto-Romanic and the lost
Dalmatian. Romanian is the only Romance language developed in the Eastern part of the
Roman Empire.
Imperiului roman.
Various linguists have attempted to identify any traces of the Dacian language that
may have survived in Romanian. Unfortunately, the absence of the written records made
it a very difficult task. These are a few words of Dacian origin: abur (steam), balaur
(dragon), baltă (swamp), bucurie (joy), cătun (hamlet), copac (tree), gresie (gritstone),
mal (riverꞌs bank), sâmbure (kernel, stone of a fruit), etc.

Transylvania, and the city of Sibiu was not an exception, suffered a lot in the Middle
Ages because of the rivalries between the pro-Habsburg and pro-Ottoman camps.
After the establishment of the Austro-Hungarian dualism, in 1867, Sibiu developed under
the auspices of industrial capitalism. The privileges of the Saxons were abolished after the
revolution from 1848, and the former serfs were given lands. The practice of trade and trades has
also been liberalized. In this context, the guilds of craftsmen, once the foundation of society,
have gradually fallen, being deprived of the political authority and monopoly of production of
the past. In their place, the small industry is developing. So, in 1868, the Rieger factory was
founded, in 1873 the boiler factory, in 1890 the leather factory, in 1897, the weighing factory,
and in 1890, the knitting factory. In 1884, the remaining guilds were transformed into so-called
”industrial corporations”, which were completely disbanded in 1940.
