• “The recent increase in the level of commodity prices has been accompanied by a significant rise in the volatility of commodity prices. While price
signals play an important role in boosting future supply and allocating existing supply, volatility in prices can hinder this process by
generating uncertainty about future price levels.”
• ”price volatility occurring over a period of months or longer, (…) can materially affect firms’ investment and production decisions”.
• ”commodity prices do tend to be more volatile than many other prices in the economy because in the short term both global supply and
demand for commodities are relatively price inelastic”
• ”while financial investors can affect the short-run price dynamics for some commodities, the level and volatility of commodity prices appear to
be primarily determined by fundamental factors”
• The Impact of Speculation on Commodity Futures – Haase et al. (2016) – the economic influence of speculation is low

• ”(…) time-variation in the standard deviations (…) highlights that commodity prices are substantially more volatile than equities (…),
especially since the 2000s”
• ”correlations have been sometimes positive and sometimes negative, but on average have hovered around zero. ”
• ”In the recent episode, however, positive correlations appear to have been stronger and more persistent compared to the past: it started
with the bursting of the financial crisis in 2008, and although correlations have declined since then, they are still positive and seem to
have stabilized around a level which is somehow higher compared to the prerecession”
Commodity and equity volatilities Dynamic Conditional Correlations between the MSCI and the BCOM.
• ”the inclusion of commodities in portfolio has boosted returns (…) at the price of a substantially higher volatility.”
MSCI – Morgan Stanley Capital International global equity index & Poor's Goldman, SPGSCI – Standard & Poor's Goldman Sachs commodity index , BCOM – Bloomberg Commodity Index – composed of futures contracts on
physical commodities
• Fousekis & Gregoriadis (2019) – Co-movement is not frequent and symmetric (i.e. predominantly zero before the last
financial crisis, and since then, it is positive and asymmetric – concerns of investors and researchers whether including
commodities in a portfolio of assets is still a prudent investment strategy.

valoare.”
