Dumitru Kiriac-Georgescu s-a nascut la data de 6 martie 1866, Bucureti - 8 ianuarie 1928,
Viena, a fost un compozitor, profesor, dirijor de cor i folclorist romn.
Studiaz mai nti la Conservatorul din Bucureti (1880-1885), apoi la Conservatorul de la Paris,
unde i are ca profesori pe E. Pessard (armonie), Theodore Dubois (contrapunct), Charles-Marie
Widor (compoziie) i, n sfrit , la Schola cantorum din Paris (1892-1897), cu Vincent d'Indy
(compoziie). A fost liceniat al Facultii de drept din Bucureti.
Activitatea sa de dirijor de cor ncepe la Capela romn din Paris (1894-1899). Dup
rentoarcerea n ar, Dumitru Georgescu-Kiriac, pune bazele Societ iile corale "Carmen" ( 19011928), al crei dirijor va fi timp de aproape trei decenii, n acelai timp dirijnd corul bisericii Sf.
Spiridon-Nou i ansamblu coral la Conservatorul bucuretean (1900-1928). A fost membru
fondator al Societii Compozitorilor Romni (1920), activnd n favoarea nfiinrii arhivei de
folclor a societii.
Orientarea muzicii corale i vocale a lui D.G. Kiriac este legat de valorificarea folclorului i a
trsturilor modale ale acestuia. Autorul adopt cu precdere genul miniaturii corale, multe dintre
coruri recurgnd chiar la melodia folcloric autentic.
Kiriac a murit in orasul sau natal la varsta de 61 de ani. A fost considerat unul dintre fondatorii
moderni ai muzicii Romanesti. Festivalul International de Muzica Corala D.G. Kiriac, un festival
international de muzica sacra si corala, ce se tine anual in orasul Pitesti.
Dumitru Georgescu Kiriac (18 March 1866 8 January 1928) was a Romanian composer,
conductor, and ethnomusicologist. He was particularly known for his sacred choral works and art
songs which were based on the Romanian Orthodox tradition and Romanian folklore.
Kiriac was born in Bucharest and began his musical studies at the Bucharest Conservatory (now
the National University of Music). From 1892 to 1899 he studied in Paris with Vincent d'Indy at
the Schola Cantorum de Paris and with Charles-Marie Widor and Gabriel Faurat the Paris
Conservatory. It was during this time that he began collecting Romanian children's folk songs. On
his return to Bucharest in 1900 he became a professor at the Bucharest Conservatory. The
following year he founded the Romanian choral society, Carmen.
Kiriac died in his native city at the age of 61. He was considered one of the founders of modern
Romanian music. Festivalul Internaional de Muzic Coral "D.G. Kiriac", an international festival
of sacred choral music held annually in the city of Piteti.
