CHAPTER IV WORD FORMATION

A. Presentation

Pre ixes

Pre ixes come at the beginning of a word. They are usually one to
three letters long, and attaching them to a word will affect the words
meaning. Some pre ixes even combine with other pre ixes to create
words such as unpremeditated (un+ pre+ meditated).

The Negative Nellies

Dis- means not, absence of, apart, away, or having a reversing force.
Since dis- means not, what does disoriented mean? Its pretty simple
when you know the pre ix.

Mis- and mal- mean wrong or bad and are sometimes used for
negation. Besides the commonmistake, these pre ixes also introduce
the words misaligned, mis it, malformed, andmalfunction.
Im- and its variant in- mean not. Think impossible, impregnable,
incapable, inconceivable.
Un- also means not. It is a very common pre ix seen in words such
as unstoppable, unconquered, and unrestrained. In fact, there are quite
a few pre ixes that mean not. Dont forget il- as in illogical and ir- as in
irreversible.

The Overachievers

Extra- is not just a brand of gum. As a pre ix, it means beyond.

Extraterrestrials live beyond the boundaries of our earth. Extrasensory

33
VLDU ANA MARIA MOLDOVAN SIMONA TIHRU OANA

perception refers to receiving information beyond what your senses

would normally detect.

Superman illustrates the pre ix super- to a tee. Didnt he go above

and beyond to save lives?

The Weights and Balances

Lots of pre ixes clue us in on size. Especially large things are

described with pre ixes likemega- and macro- while small things are
micro- or mini-. That information can help you to buy electronics:
Would you prefer a minicomputer or one with more megabytes?

Equi- means equal, as in equidistant. The semi- of semigloss paint

lets you know that it is only partially glossy.

Other pre ixes indicate quantity like over- (excess) and under-
(insuf iciency).

The Counters

Pre ixes can tell you how much of something there is. Mono- and
uni- mean one. How many wheels does a unicycle have? How many
people speak during a monologue? Bi- and di- refer to two.

The GPS Pre ixes

If you like to know where things are, you will appreciate the following
group of pre ixes. They designate locations. You can remember them
by associating them with common examples.Submarines go under
the water. Transporters carry goods across distances from one place
to another. The infrastructure is the basic framework underlying an
organization. Peripheral vision helps you to see around yourself.

Straitlaced Pre ixes

These pre ixes involve time and order. Dif icult words like
antecedent and precedent are simpler to decode if you remember that
ante- and pre- mean before.

34
S T E P S T O WA R D S T H E 9 T H G R A D E

Post- means after. Retro- signi ies backward. Prim(e)- denotes irst.

Suf ixes

You ind suf ixes at the ends of words. Like pre ixes, they are a rich
source of information about a word. Have you ever seen blue or pink
balloons at a baby shower? Some parents use colors to indicate the sex
of their new baby. In the same way, some suf ixes announce what part
of speech a word is. Here are some examples.

Its a Noun

The following suf ixes are usually found at the end of nouns: -ance,
-ation, -ness, -ism, -ment, -ship.

Beyond giving clues to the part of speech, suf ixes also carry
meaning. The endings -er, -or, -ist, or -yst are commonly added to words
for people who perform certain tasks or activities. Examples include
programmer, calculator, analyst, and abolitionist.

Its a Verb

There are several suf ixes associated with the meaning to make.
By combining the base active with the suf ix -ate, you create the word
activate, which means to make active.

Other suf ixes with this meaning are -ize, -ise, -ify, and -en. What
verbs do you know that end with these suf ixes?

Its an Adverb

In the majority of cases, adverbs are formed by adding -ly to an

adjective. For instance, beautiful becomes beautifully. If the adjective
already ends with a y as in easy, you would replace the y with -ily to
form the adverb easily. There is a special rule for adjectives ending in
-able, -ible, or -le: replace the -e with -y. For most words ending in -ic
(with the exception ofpublic) add -ally.

35
VLDU ANA MARIA MOLDOVAN SIMONA TIHRU OANA

Its an Adjective

Brownish is a color strongly reminiscent of brown, but not quite

brown. People have a lot of fun with -ish because it means similar. You
may even hear someone use this suf ix alone in response to a question.
Sally and Peter are dating, arent they? Ish! The slang use of the suf ix
means something like that.
-Al, -ar, -ed, -ic, -ical, and -ive signify having the quality of. Magnetic
objects, for example, have qualities of magnets.
The -ous of dangerous means full of or like, while -less means
without.
Do you ever feel disoriented, unhinged, or disarranged? If you
used hints from the pre ixes and suf ixes in these words, you realized
that they are synonyms of disoriented. Next time you encounter a
tough word, dont panic. Use those little building blocks to guess the
meaning of the term. When you come across an unfamiliar af ix, look
up its meaning in a dictionary. Try to use the pre ixes and suf ixes
in conversation and writing. In time, you will speak and write more
effectively than ever before.

CHAPTER V TRUE OR FALSE?

Read the texts below and decide whether the sentences are true (T)
or false (F):

I. Each year, on the fourth Thursday in November, many Americans

gather around the table with their families to eat a large feast. Do you
know why this is so? It is a celebration of Thanksgiving.Thanksgiving
started back with the Pilgrims. The year was 1621. The Pilgrims had
survived a very dif icult winter. The next fall they had a great harvest.
They were so grateful that they decided to have a feast to celebrate.
They invited 91 Native Americans to join them. The Pilgrims and guests
gathered around a large table to eat. There were games, races, and
other activities. The celebration lasted three days. We dont know if
they really did have turkey, but they did have some kind of bird, as well
as venison (meat from deer). They didnt have pumpkin pie because
there wasnt enough lour for that. They did have pumpkin that had
been boiled and softened. They also had berries, fruit, nuts, and ish.It
wasnt until 1777 that all 13 colonies celebrated Thanksgiving. A lady
named Sarah Hale wrote articles in magazines about how important
it was to celebrate Thanksgiving. Finally in 1863, President Abraham
Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving to be celebrated on the fourth
Thursday in November. In 1941, Thanksgiving became an of icial
national holiday. Thanksgiving has been celebrated ever since.

II. Jonathan stretched his muscles. Each year, Jonathan and his
friends participated in the diving contest at the community pool.
Divers from all over the county came to participate. The competition
began with all the divers making an assigned dive. They were given
points based on how they pointed their toes, tucked their heads, and
on the form of the dive. Jonathan performed his dive and scraped up
enough points to move on to the next round. At this level, the diver
could select the dive of his or her choice. Thoughts of the inal dive
came into Jonathans mind. All the divers gathered around discussing
who was left to compete. Jonathan noticed a poor boy that had on an
old swimsuit. Jonathan laughed with his peers about how this boy
managed to slip into this level of divers. The boy was irst, and he
made his way up to the highest board. He made his dive and then sat
down.It was a sloppy dive without much inesse. Jonathan was next.

He performed his dive without a hitch. All the divers were stunned

when the poor boys name was announced. The judge threw up his

III. Jenna had been planning a sleepover for as long as she could
remember. She had made all the arrangements. She had cleaned up
the basement so that there would be plenty of room to spread out and
have sleeping bags. She had invited six friends over, ordered pizza, and
picked up three scary movies.By seven oclock, all the girls had arrived
and they had downed the irst pizza. Jenna happened to glance up at
the window. She screamed when she saw a man standing in the yard.
All the girls screamed and asked what was wrong. Jenna pointed to the

window, and all the girls screamed when they saw the man.The girls
crept up to the window again to get a good look at him. They needed a
plan. Jennas parents had gone to the store. Jenna went to get a baseball
bat from her brothers room. Then Mandy asked,

Are you really going to use that?

I dont know, but it makes me feel safer, explained Jenna.

What do you think he wants? asked Brooke.

I dont know, but Im not going to talk to him, said Jenna.

Hes just standing there not moving at all, commented Mandy.

Wait a minute, said Samantha. Thats not a man: thats a

scarecrow.

IV. Urban song birds are raising the pitch of their voices to make
themselves heard above the background roar of the city, scientists
report today. But the sounds of city life may be harming the chaf inch,
dunnock and other birds whose vocal range is unable to soar above the
din. Loud and low noise sources such as cars, planes, and machinery
are placing new selection pressure on species that rely on sound to
attract mates and de ine territories. This has been observed for the
irst time in great tits which have been found to sing higher notes near
major roads and busy intersections, a ploy that could allow these urban
birds to ensure that their mating calls are heard above the racket. Birds
in quieter spots such as residential neighbourhoods, on the other
hand, more often dip to the bottom of their vocal register, a Dutch
team reports today in Nature. City-dwelling birds seem to be tailoring
their songs to ensure maximum success with the opposite sex against
a background of low-frequency urban rumblings. Any bird species
that produces songs within the frequency range of urban pollution
and lack the ability to adapt their songs so they are heard, may ind
it dif icult to breed in built-up areas. Birds like the crested lark and
golden oriole are disappearing or have disappeared from Dutch cities
and, among several other factors (loss of habitat, lack of food sources,
loss of nesting sites) masking of their advertisement song by ambient
noise may have played a role, Dr Slabbekoorn said.

1. Birds voices are louder in the cities so that they could cover the
urban noise.
2. The background noise of the city may disrupt some speciei of
birds.
3. There are birds who use the noise to attract their partners.
4. Mating calls are rarely heard near busy roads.
5. Residential areas are considered as being less noisy.

43
VLDU ANA MARIA MOLDOVAN SIMONA TIHRU OANA

6. Birds which live in the city adjust the pitch of their voices ac-
cording to the level of noise.
7. Birds cannot breed in built-up areas.
8. Not all birds are able to adapt their songs to the level of noise.
9. Some speciei of birds are about to become extinct because their
mating song cannot be heard.
10. Birds use songs to attract partners and to mark their teritories.

V. For many years the Arctic was a popular destination in the

summer season to see the land of the midnight sun but in winter the
few inhabitants had the snow and ice to themselves. By the end of the
1980s it was decided that the dark and cold winter should be seen as
an advantage. In the winter of 1990 the French artist Jannot Derit was
invited to have the opening of an exhibition in a specially built igloo (a
building made of snow) in the little town of Jukkasjrvi on the frozen
Torne River. The building, named Arctic Hall, attracted many interested
visitors to the area. One night a group of foreign guests decided it
would be a good idea to sleep in the Arctic Hall. The following morning
the brave group were very pleased with their experience and the idea
of an ice hotel was born. Today it is world famous.

As soon as winter begins, a team of snow builders, architects and

artists from all over the world come to Jukkasjrvi and they make
the hotel for that year. As one part is completed, it opens to visitors
and overnight guests, while the other parts are still being built. The
irst part is completed in December and each week after that a new
part opens, until January 7th when the hotel is completed. As the
ICEHOTEL is built under the open sky, using the natural materials of
the winter season, the inishing date depends on nature and therefore
there are sometimes changes to the plan. In the spring, as the weather
gets warmer, the hotel melts. Inside the hotel, the temperature is never

44
S T E P S T O WA R D S T H E 9 T H G R A D E

colder than 5 C to 8 C, however cold it may be outside. Winter

outer clothes such as warm overalls, hats and gloves are included in

VI. The island of Tasmania is separated from mainland Australia by

the Bass Strait. The island is a place of natural beauty and has more
than 2000 km of walking tracks and 18 national parks. If you go on a
tour, youll discover a wild and beautiful place where the people are
friendly and the food is delicious. If you dont like walking there are
other tours you can choose from including a river cruise and cycling.
You can also combine your tour with ishing, sailing or sunbathing on
the beach.

One of the most incredible places to walk is along the Tarkine coast
which is located in the north-west of Tasmania. Its such a wild and
remote area that you can easily complete your walk without seeing
anyone apart from the members of your group and your two guides.
The area contains the largest temperate rainforest in Australia which
is home to more than 50 endangered species. It is also home to many
Aboriginal Heritage Sites. Your guides will provide you with plenty
of information about the area as you complete that part of your
tour. During your tour, youll come across rivers, mountain ranges,
spectacular waterfalls, wildlife and long wild beaches. It will be an
experience you wont easily forget.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1:

Youre picked up from your hotel in the town of Launceston and

driven to the Tarkine. You then complete a three-hour walk through
the forest before arriving at your camp at Mystery Creek. There you
will enjoy a delicious meal cooked by your guides.

After breakfast, you continue deeper into the rainforest, passing

some of the tallest trees in the world as you go, and stopping for lunch
and then camp in the evening.

VII. Madagascar has two seasons, a warm, wet season from

November to April, and a cooler dry season between May and October.
However, different parts of the country have very different weather.

The east coast is hotter and wetter, with up to 4000mm of rainfall

per year. In the rainy season, there are strong winds, and these can
cause a lot of damage. Avoid visiting eastern Madagascar between
January and March because the weather can make road travel very
dif icult. The dry season is cooler and more pleasant.

The high, central part of the country is much drier and cooler. About
1,400 mm of rain falls in the rainy season, with some thunderstorms,
but the summer is usually sunny and dry, but it can be cold, especially
in the mornings, with freezing showers, and it may snow in mountain
areas above 2,400m, and even stay there for several days.

The west coast is the driest part of the island. Here, the winter
months are pleasant with little rain, cooler temperatures and blue
skies. The summers can be extremely hot, especially in the southwest.
This part of the country is semi-desert, and only gets around 300mm
of rain per year.

1- Madagascar has four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and

winter.

2- There is more rain in January than in June.

3- The wet season is colder than the dry season.

4- It hardly ever rains in central Madagascar.

5- The wettest part of the island is the east.

6- January-March is a good time to visit eastern Madagascar.

VIII. Its been a very exciting week, as weve just moved into our
new school building! Its an amazing place, as the builders have used
wood for the whole thing, just like in our old school, but its also one of
the irst in my country designed to be really environmentally friendly.
The school took months to build, so we saw it all happening. It was
really exciting seeing the builders clear the space where it would be,
although it also meant that some lovely open land disappeared. And the
noise of the building machines was really loud, although the builders
often had to stop work because it rained so hard. We all began to think
the building would never be inished. We have ive classrooms now,
which are enormous much bigger than in our previous school next
door, which was very old. We share one room with people in the town
when they want to have meetings and so on. Theres a nursery too, a
lovely dining room, and really big changing rooms which were looking
forward to using as soon as our new sports ield is ready.

When you come into the school, one of the irst things you notice is
that there arent any heaters in the building! Instead, the heat for the
school comes from all of us inside it the children, the teachers and the
computers we use. The building is so well designed that it holds all the
heat inside and all the sound too, so if we sing inside our classrooms,
we can almost believe were inside a concert hall! Another thing youll
notice is that the school roof has a tree on top of it! It was put there by
the builders once theyd inished the roof, because they said it was the
custom in Austria, the country where the roof was made. The electricity
for lights and computers comes from a wind turbine on a hill behind
the school. We went with our teacher to look at it yesterday, and it goes
round really fast. Its so big, it can be seen for miles!

49
VLDU ANA MARIA MOLDOVAN SIMONA TIHRU OANA

We took some pictures which were planning to put on the website.

Even though were already using the school building, there are still
some parts to be added to it for example, at the moment were putting
on a play for parents to come and see, but we still have to walk back to
our old school hall to do it. The replacement will be ready by next year,
though. Were so pleased with our new school, and our teachers say
well all learn much faster now were in it!

1- Annas school is the irst one in her country to be made completely

of wood.

2- Anna had mixed feelings about seeing the space cleared, ready
for building the school.

3- Builders managed to carry on with their work on the school

despite the bad weather.

4- There is one room that is kept just for the meetings of the local
people.

5- The children ind the new changing rooms convenient when they
do sports on their ield.

6-People and computers provide heat to the building.

7- The new school building offers great bene its for people who
enjoy singing.

8- After inishing the roof, the builders wanted to add a traditional

element to it.

9- Pictures of the wind turbine behind the school can now be seen
online.

10-The pupils are busy preparing a performance for their parents

in their new school building.

2000 years ago, the most powerful army in the world belonged to
the Romans. The Romans were so strong, that they conquered almost
all of Europe, and parts of Asia and Africa. But then they began to

of the soldiers longed for the comforts of home. They wanted to get

By that time, many of the Romans were Christians. And one of their
leaders was a Bishop called Valentine. He believed that if a man and
woman fell in love with each other, they should get married - and so
he decided to let soldiers get married in his church, even though it was
now against the law. The soldiers weddings were meant to be kept
secret, but as you know, all secrets are hard to keep, and soon the word
got out. Valentine was arrested and brought before the emperor who

pray to the gods of Rome. When he refused, the emperor sentenced

57
VLDU ANA MARIA MOLDOVAN SIMONA TIHRU OANA

It was both a weapon and an art object. This double identity mirrored
the samurai themselves. As well as being warriors, they used to
socialise with painters, playwrights and intellectuals. Samurai generals
practised calligraphy, did lower arranging and went to the theatre. But
of all their cultural activities, the tea ceremony was the most important.
The ceremony of making and drinking tea was another ritual, almost
a meditation. It was carried out in a small room where swords were
forbidden, even to samurai, and it must have been very inviting to
battle-weary warriors.(...) The continuing appeal of the samurai is due
to a simple fact: he is one of the worlds greatest action igures. Hes the
lone swordsman who kills dozens of enemies in the name of duty and
individual glory. The samurai warrior is the cowboy, the knight, the
gladiator, and the Star Wars Jedi all rolled into one. The samurai have
inspired hundreds of ilms, video games, comic books and TV dramas.

A great river formed the border between two countries. By the light
of the moon three men were crossing the dark water on a small raft.
The river was wide but the current was not strong. The river bank was
thick with trees. No one had seen the men arrive and make camp a few
days earlier. A river patrol boat that passed each afternoon had not
seen them nor had the rangers plane that lew along the border. For
three days the men had camped and slept in the thick woodland. This
was the third time they had made a night crossing on the river.

All three men were wearing camou lage clothing. Two of them
paddled the raft while their leader studied the bank they were heading
for with powerful binoculars. These had lenses that made it possible
for him to see in the dark. There were three hunting ri les, boxes of
cartridges, an axe and some rubber torches wrapped in plastic on the
deck of the raft.

The three men landed the raft down-river from a crescent-shaped

bay. Up river, in the muddy water, ive or six elephants were drinking
and bathing. The men stepped ashore carrying the ri les and lay
down to wait behind a bush. Two were boys rather than men. When
the elephants moved off, after about half an hour, the leader kept on

A caffeine-fuelled world
Over the centuries, people have created many rituals to accompany
the consumption of their favourite drinks, tea and coffee. Just think
of the Japanese tea ceremony, British afternoon tea or the morning
coffee ritual in countless societies. Why are these drinks so popular?
The answer is their secret ingredient caffeine. In the modern world,
the new caffeine delivery systems are canned energy drinks. And the
more modern our world gets, the more we seem to need caffeine. People
have known for years that caffeinated drinks make you less tired and
more alert. This dual power of caffeine to counteract physical fatigue
and increase alertness is part of the reason why it is the worlds most
popular mood-altering drug. It is the only habit-forming psychoactive
drug we routinely serve to our children (in all those soft drinks and
chocolate bars). In fact, most babies in the developed world are born
with traces of caffeine in their bodies.

Most people dont think twice about their caffeine intake. However,
it raises blood pressure and thus increases the risk of heart disease.
So the widespread use of caffeine is now a cause for concern among
scientists and public health authorities. One result of this concern is
that you are not allowed to sell energy drinks in France or Denmark.
And in other European countries, manufacturers have to label cans
with warnings. The United States has no such rule, but many canned
energy drinks sold in the USA carry warnings anyway. On the other
hand, much of the research suggests that caffeine may have bene its
for human health. Studies have shown it helps relieve pain, reduces
asthma symptoms and increases reaction speed. Despite this, a study
in Ireland recommended that children and pregnant women, among
other groups, shouldnt drink energy drinks.

An intelligent jacket

can be used in the same way as a hands-free mobile phone. The jacket
provides the normal features of a mobile phone without a screen or

hidden inside the jacket, the number keys are inside the front edge,
and the microphone is in the collar. The user presses the star button to
get the dial tone or to hang up, and the caller simply says the name of
the person to call, or else dials the number on the keypad part of the
jacket.
France Telecom R&D is testing the jacket in real situations, to see
what possible users think of it. These tests involve professional people
working outside the of ice (on outdoor projects, for example), non-
professional athletes, as well as teenagers and young college students.
The results will help France Telecom R&D to improve the jackets
design. The centre has contacted clothing manufacturers interested
in using the new technology. Future possibilities include new ways to
inform the user of an incoming call. One way heats the material of the
jacket near the skin to tell the user there is a call - for use in very noisy

amusing look at school life, besides which, the violence in the game
is directed against the bullies to protect pupils who are being bullied.
The makers also say that players will learn to stand up to bullies. A
British politician, a former minister, has called for it to be banned as
it might affect the way young people perceive violence. Anti-bullying
charities have said that the game might make people respond violently
to bullies, which might make things more complicated and result in
injuries.

The irst information revolution took place ive hundred years ago
when Johann Gutenbergs printing press made books big business.
The printed page changed the way people thought and how they ran
their lives. Now we are in the middle of a second revolution, and the
question to be asked is Will the printed word survive?
Paper books are cheap and ef icient but electronic books can store
much more information a thousand paperbacks on one disk and
manage that information in ways that paper books simply cant.
This revolutionary new system is called CDROM, which means
compact disk read only memory as once the disk is made, its contents

2. Swimming
I am among those who dont know how to swim. I have always been
afraid of water. This may be due to a childhood experience I had when
I was about three. My family used to spend the holidays at the seaside
every year. I was playing happily on the beach all day long while my

mother was lying in the sun. From time to time she took me into the
shallow water and tried to teach me how to swim. Once she didnt hold
me tight enough and I went under. My mouth and nostrils illed with
water and I couldnt breathe. My mother started shouting for help
and a young man who was swimming nearby came to see what had
happen. When he saw my mothers face, he understood immediately.

When I was about twelve, I suddenly developed a great passion
for writing poetry. I gave up all my other hobbies such as collecting
stamps and spent all my spare time writing poetry. This habit of
writing poems on every possible occasion soon got me into trouble
at school. During uninteresting lessons I used take out my notebook
and start writing. Once, while I was writing during a geography class, I
looked up to ind the teacher looking at me, furious because I was not
paying attention. He tore my poem up, with a warning not to waste any
more time in his lesson. All the same, I felt I had written a good poem
so that evening I wrote it again from memory. Not long after, I read
about a poetry contest and decided to send in my poem. To my joy, I

5. Tattooing an ancient tradition

Tattooing is an old art. In ancient Greece, people who had tattoos
were regarded as members of the upper classes. On the other hand,
tattooing was blamed in Europe by the early Christians, who thought
that it was a sinful thing to do.
It was not until the late 18th century, when Captain Cook saw South
Sea Islanders decorating their bodies with tattoos, that attitude began
to change. Sailors came back from these islands with pictures of Christ
on their backs and from then on, tattooing gained in popularity. A
survey by the French army in 1881 showed that among the 378 men
inquired there were 1,333 designs.
Nowadays, not everybody inds tattoos acceptable. Some people
think they might catch blood disease from unsterilised needles. Even
for those who do want a tattoo, the process of getting one is not

Magician David Blaine, at age 27, has been frozen alive inside one

weighed six tones and was sealed shut. Blaine set a new record for
standing still in the ice (6l hours, 40 minutes and l5 seconds). Blaine
had only enough room inside the ice to scratch his nose. His only lifeline
was a tube running through the ice, carrying air and water. A medical
team was standing by, constantly checking his physical condition.
The ive centimetres of air that separated Blaine from the ice
prevented him from freezing to death, although as he says If Id fallen

had been talking for a minute or so before I understood anything. Even
then, all I could make out was that someone called Milly had a very bad
accident. I didnt have the slightest idea who she was, but I obviously
had to go.
It had snowed heavily that day and I didnt know the way. I had
been driving for at least an hour when I inally found his place. He was
standing there, waiting for me. It seemed Milly had almost died. She
meant more to me than anyone even my own wife he said. I could
see that he had been crying. I assumed a terrible tragedy had taken
place with overtones of a possible scandal. I must admit I was even

a drink before my train arrived. I asked the lady behind the counter
for a whisky, and we started talking. She told me that her company
had closed down and so she lost her job. She was just working in the

with politeness but he nevertheless got the impression he was doing
something wrong. Quite some time went by before one of his Japanese
colleagues plucked up the courage to tell him he spoke Japanese like
a woman and explained that often different vocabulary is used for the
same objects depending on whether a man or a woman is speaking.
Japanese is not the only language which makes such distinctions,

gender can affect speech patterns in English too.

shopping is necessary. It can also be fun. For many people it is a hobby,

Shopping makes many of us feel better. However, it can go badly wrong

12. Thomas Cook the inventor of the package holiday

The inventor of the package tour was Thomas Cook. Born in
Leicester in 1808, Cook was a preacher who went around the country
telling people about the evils of alcohol. He believed that people would
be less tempted by drink if they could get out of the cities and into the
countryside on their days off.
In 1841, while he was travelling around the North, he had an idea.
He reserved an entire train to go from Leicester to Loughborough
and back again in one day. Cook organized lots of activities for his
customers, and the tickets, which he sold) for one shilling ( ive pence),
included everything travel, food and entertainment. The excursion
as he called it was a great success he had sold) more than 500 tickets.
As the railway network was spreading across Britain, Cooks
excursions became more ambitious. By the mid 1840s, he conducted
tours to Scotland, Liverpool, Newcastle and London. By 1855 Cook had
organised tours for almost ifteen years and felt that he had enough
experience to start venturing overseas. He began with continental

My father rushed me to the hospital. They set my leg and put it in a

I had to learn to get up out of bed. I had to learn to go up and down

The cat is often perceived as a solitary, sel ish animal, walking alone,
in comparison to dog. Wild cats it this picture very well, but they are

owners. The fact that pet cats will share a home with a human family is,
in itself, proof of their social lexibility. But this picture is incomplete.

15. Animals and people

I came across an article in a magazine the other day which made
a comparison between people and animals. It seemed to come to the
conclusion that in most cases we are superior to animals and lead a
more comfortable life. Wild animals have much more freedom than
pets or animals in zoos, but even a lion or tiger in the jungle could be
killed by hunters at almost any time. For animals, life is generally hard
and dangerous compared to the life led by people in large cities, where
there is not only variety but also the freedom to choose the kind of life
you want to lead. It is hard to imagine a life more boring than that of
a tortoise. However, we humans do have some disadvantages in areas
such as smell, hearing or speed. For example, a dogs sense of smell is
much more powerful than ours.

your promotional prospects, your hours of work and your working

will live, your social life, even which sport and leisure activities you
are more likely to take up. So, as you can imagine, it is a complicated
business.

17.Protecting wildlife
Nowadays people are more aware that wildlife all over the world
is in danger. Many species of animals are threatened and could easily
become extinct if we do not make an effort to protect them. There
are many reasons for this. In some cases, animals are hunted for
their fur or for other valuable parts of their bodies. Some birds, such
as parrots, are caught alive and sold as pets. For many animals and
birds, the problem is that their habitat the place where they live is
disappearing. More land is used for farms, for houses or industry, and
there are fewer open spaces than there once were. The chemicals used,
pollute the environment and destroy wildlife. The most successful
animals on earth human beings will soon be the only ones left,

18. Cars good or bad?

Cars have changed our lives in many ways. They have opened up the
world for us, and thats good. But the irony is that cars are destroying
the world they have opened up for us.
Cars make our world noisy and ugly. There are traf ic jams
everywhere, terrible accidents, and worst of all, there is pollution.
Of course, cars are only part of the problem, but it is a big part. And
we have to do something now. We have to get rid of cars and all the
other things that pollute our world -industry, everything. And we have
to do it before its too late for ourselves and for our children.

19. A passion for singing

I have seen a Welsh Eisteddfod, a national gathering of an
enormous crowd of people devoted to music and poetry. The Welsh
are a nation of singers. Wherever you get a crowd of Welshmen,
whether theyre down the mine, in the factory or waiting on the
platform for a train, they just cant help bursting into song.
Anyone who has heard a crowd of 50,000 Welshmen before a rugby
match at Cardiff singing Land of my Fathers, will never forget it.
You can hardly find a town in Wales, however small, that hasnt a
choir. Its conductor isnt a trained musician; he may be only a miner,
an agricultural laborer or Jones the milk; but the university
lecturer or the doctors daughter will be happy to work under his
leadership. The choir will gather in the little chapel almost every
night for practice they are preparing for the Eisteddfod, and the
pieces set for competition need a lot of practice to bring them to
perfection. I should think the Welsh are the only people in the world
whose only national festival is devoted to music and poetry.

As the storm got worse, they couldnt see any longer where they were

The mass media nowadays are our main source of information
about whats happening in the world and the impression one gets from
them about human nature is pretty depressing. My blood pressure rises
every time I switch the television on. Apart from gossip about show
business personalities, the picture they paint of human beings is that
they are violent and bloodthirsty. They just report crimes, violations
of human rights and the way we are destroying our natural resources.
They rarely report breakthroughs in science or medicine; its a bleak
picture. Last night, there was a report about a mass break-out from a

23. Organizing work space

Are you a neat person or a messy person? Is your desk neat or
messy? Tom Malone is interested in studying peoples desks, or work
spaces, as he calls them. A persons work space tells you about how
he or she organizes work.
Malone says both neat and messy people have two main
considerations in organizing their work space: inding and reminding.
Finding means being able to get messages and papers at the time you
need them. Reminding means telling you to do things at a certain
time. Malone has noticed that people place things in different places
depending on how important they are and when they will be needed.
Someone asked Malone if it is better to be neat or messy. He said,
Messy people have more problems inding things, but neat people
have to spend a lot of time to keep their work space neat.
Malone uses these ideas about work spaces to help him design
computers. When people use computers, he says, they also have these
same two concerns: inding and reminding.

spent asleep. Though we still use Alfreds idea as a yardstick, we all
ind the sleep patterns which suit us best. While its true that too much
or too little sleep can use headaches, drowsiness, lack of energy and
irritability, its the quality of sleep rather than quantity, which matters.
However, drugs can help achieving deep sleep.

Do you sleep a lot?
In what way can sleep affect us?

25. Peter the Great

Peter the Great was Russias fourth Romanov Tzar. He had an
enormous appetite for food and drink. Another great aspect of his
personality was his temper which was fearsome. But it was his thirst
for knowledge combined with his vision of a new Russia that made him
a great leader. In 1697, motivated by his desire to break free from the
constrictions of old Russian customs, Peter travelled around Europe,
learning valuable military and industrial skills
When he returned to Russia, Peter was determined to throw off
the remnants of the past. In order to ful ill his dream of a modernised.
Russia, he founded universities, established the countrys irst
newspaper and encouraged the development of industry. Before his

War.

26. City life or country life ?

In many countries of Europe there has been a steady drift of people
away from villages to large cities. These people, many of whom have
grown up in great poverty and deprivation, hope to improve their
standard of living, and see the metropolis as a solution to all their
problems. In many ways, they ind what they are looking for. Large cities
do offer a huge number of facilities, among which better education,
better health care and improved housing, are perhaps the most
important. Large companies and factories, the vast majority of which
pride themselves on looking after the interests of their employees, also
open up any number of career opportunities for those willing to work
hard. Inevitably, however, there comes a time when people begin to
long for the simplicity of the village or small town. Traf ic problems
and pollution, both of which affect most large cities today, cause the
most unhappiness. The pressure of overpopulation has meant that, in
the last thirty or forty years, thousands upon thousands of new lats
have been built, often with little regard to architectural beauty, and the
surrounding countryside has all but disappeared in many cases. It is
no longer such an easy matter to escape the noise and turmoil of the
streets and ind a ield or a forest where the children can play in safety.
Tell the text brie ly.
Do you think life in a city is better than life in the country?
Do you live in the country or in a town?
Where would you like to live?

27.
In the end I walked back to the city centre, which was about 8 Km.
away. I knew I could catch the bus there! At last I got home, three
hours later. But we had a visitor at home. He was Mr. Brown, my home
teacher. Home teachers visit the blind to talk to them, and they bring
Braille paper and other helpful things. Mr. Brown visited our family
quite often, because none of us could see well.
He asked at once, Why dont you have a guide dog? A guide dog
takes blind people about the streets, and guides them through the
traf ic. The dog sees for the blind person, and becomes the eyes of the
blind.
I liked animals very much. But I never thought of a guide dog. Mr.
Brown continued. you need a guide dog, Sheila, and youre just the
right age for one.
I asked quickly, How can I get a guide dog? What do I have to do?
Tell the story brie ly
Why did the girl arrived home so late?
Did the girl want a guide dog?
How could the dog help Sheila?

28. Bats
Bats are one of the most numerous and successful groups of
mammals that have ever lived on earth. Over 950 species are known
to exist. Bats have spread to almost every part of the world, from the
Arctic to Southern America. However, bats all over the world are under
pressure from a fast-growing human population. Loss of suitable
places to live, a fall in food supply and environmental pollution are
all making life increasingly dif icult for many bat species. Strangely,
there are some wild creatures which are, in fact, little or no threat to
humans, but consistently disturb people by their presence and cause
irrational fear. Among them are such animals as spiders, cockroaches,
mice and more often than not, bats. Exactly why bats should frighten
so many of us is hard to understand. They are small, capable of sudden
changes in direction and active at night. In addition to this, they have
an unpredictable way of lying that can bring them extremely close.

29. Superstitions
Many superstitions are related to important events in our lives,
such as birth, entering adulthood, marriage pregnancy and death.
They ensure that we pass safely from one stage of our life to the next.
For example, a person born on a Sunday will always have good luck.
A bride and groom will have bad luck if they see each other on their
wedding day before the ceremony. A pregnant woman must eat the
right food, or she will give her child an unwanted birthmark. After a
person dies, the doors and windows of the room should be opened so
the spirit can leave.
Tell the text brie ly.
Which is the difference between superstition and bad luck.
Do you believe in superstitions?
Are any of the superstitions mentioned in the text similar to
superstitions in our culture?

30. The interview

A large supermarket was looking for a manager for a new store they
were planning. to open. Out of over 90 people who had applied for the
post they had chosen ive and asked them to come to an interview.
The irst applicant, Mr. Riley, walked into the interview room. He was
smartly dressed but it was clear he was listening to a personal stereo.
He sat down and lit a cigarette. One of the interviewers said that he
would prefer him not to smoke and Mr. Riley apologized. A moment
later, a telephone rang. Mr. Riley reached into his pocket, took out a
mobile phone and began a conversation with a friend of his. After a
minute or two, the interviewers had had it and said they wanted to
begin. Certainly, go ahead said Mr. Riley. They asked him why he
wanted the job. I dont , he replied. But I felt like a day in London and
youve already paid my train fare to come up here for the interview
