Adjectivul posesiv în limba engleză are forme diferenţiate după persoană, număr şi gen. La persoana a
IIa singular şi plural are aceeaşi formă: Look, there is a fly in your soup. (Priveşte, este o muscă în supa
ta.) Tom and Mary, you must obey your parents.(Tom şi Mary, trebuie să vă ascultaţi părinţii).
Genul este marcat doar la persoana a IIIa singular:
- His se referă la substantive nume de persoană de sex bărbătesc:
John’s / The man’s / His car is new.
- Her se referă la substantive nume de persoană de sex femeiesc:
Ann’s / The woman’s / Her umbrella is wet.
- Its se referă la substantive animate (nume de animale) şi inanimate (nume de obiecte):
The cat’s / Its tail is long.
The door of the room / Its door is open.

Adjectivele îşi modifică forma propriu-zisă doar la Gradul Comparativ şi la Gradul superlativ
relativ.
În cazul adjectivelor formate dintr-o singură silabă şi celor formate din două silabe terminate în
consoană + -y, -ble, -er şi –ow, comparativul se formează adăugând formei de pozitiv, terminaţia – e(r), iar
superlativul adăugând terminaţia – e(st):

a) Consoana se dublează dacă adjectivul se termină în consoană precedată de o vocală scurtă [e,I,a,o]: hot-
hotter-the hottest
b) Dacă adjectivul se termină în consoană + y, - y devine - i.

În cazul adjectivelor formate din mai mult de două silabe sau din două silabe, şi nu se termină în consoană
+ y, -er, ble şi –ow, comparativul se formează cu „more”, iar superlativul cu „the most”:
