Mustafa Kemal Atatürk Mustafa Kemal Atatürk,or Mustafa Kemal Pasha until 1921, and Ghazi Mustafa Kemal from 1921 until 1934 (c. 1881[d] – 10 November 1938) was a Turkish field marshal, revolutionary statesman, author, and the founding father of the Republic of Turkey, serving as its first president from 1923 until his death in 1938. In practice he was a moderate dictator, although he imposed many democratic reforms. In 1932, in Mustafa wanting to quote the opinion of a certain Italian author who described the Turkish leader as a dictator. In response, Kemal replied with a smile: "He's wrong, if I were what he claims, you wouldn't dare tell me." His prestige was high in the 1920s, so there was very little opposition to the government in his time. Although he admired some aspects of the politics of the Soviet Union and Fascist Italy, he was neither communist nor fascist: private property was protected and encouraged and political enemies usually suffered no harsher punishments than provincial exile. On 1 November 1928, he introduced the new Turkish alphabet and abolished the use of the Arabic script. Saffet Arıkan, a politician who was the head of the Turkish Language Association, said "Ulu Önderimiz Ata Türk Mustafa Kemal" ("Our Great Leader Ata Türk Mustafa Kemal") in the opening speech of the 2nd Language Day on 26 September 1934. Later, the surname "Atatürk" ("father of the Turks") was accepted as the surname of Mustafa Kemal after the adoption of the Surname Law in 1934, which obligated the Turkish people to adopt fixed, hereditary surnames and forbade names that contained connotations of foreign cultures, nations, tribes, and religions. The Balkan Pact was negotiated by Atatürk with Greece, Romania, and Yugoslavia. This mutual-defence agreement intended to guarantee the signatories' territorial integrity and political independence against attack from another Balkan state. In the same state and in the same order of ideas, a Treaty of Eternal Friendship was signed between the Republic of Turkey and Romania, and the treaty is still in force today.
