Termenul reptil din limba latin nseamn tritoare, denumire, de altfel, incomplet, deoarece reptilele, pe
lng capacitatea de trre, prezint i alte modaliti de deplasare: mers la pas, alergat la galop, plutire sau not, mers
pe oglinda apei fr a se scufunda, saluturi spectaculoase i chiar zbor planat.
i totui cea mai adecvat denumire a reptilelor ar fi copiii Soarelui, deoarece, fiind animale cu snge rece, ele
au nevoie n permanen de radiaia solar pentru a supravieui. Din aceast cauz, majoritatea speciilor populeaz cu
precdere zonele tropicale i cele cu clim arid, deerturile, unde este cald n tot cursul anului. Astfel, dac n zonele
nominalizate reptilele prezint o diversitate de mii de specii, atunci n cea temperat (din care face parte i Republica
Moldova) numrul lor este de doar cteva zeci de specii. n zona polar ns, din cauza temperaturilor joase, au putut
supravieui doar dou specii oprla vivipar i vipera. Pentru a se reproduce n asemenea condiii climaterice,
acestea au trecut de la depunerea oulor n sol (care nicidecum nu s-ar putea dezvolta) la nasterea puilor vii, adic la
viviparitate.
