With a quick wit and a clever mind, Mercutio is a scene stealer and one of the m ost memorable characters in all of Shakespeare's works. Mercutio, a secondary ch aracter in Romeo and Juliet, is essential to the play. Mercutio is the Prince's kinsman, but more importantly, he is Romeo's friend and confidant. Throughout al l the pain, love, and suffering brought to the two lovers in Romeo and Juliet, h e was the one character who provided a humorous break from all of the emotional tragedy. Mercutio is my favorite Shakespearean character because of his excellen t qualities and because I can identify with him. Mercutio's concern is always for Romeo and for peace between the two families, t he Capulets and the Montagues. Mercutio is the first to see that Romeo is deeply in love with Juliet. Mercutio shows his concern and expresses it to Romeo. He d oes not want Romeo to marry his mistress, Juliet, because he knows it will cause trouble between the two families. He believed firmly that it was foolish for Ro meo to fall in love so fast. He says "If love is blind, love cannot hit the mark ." Mercutio has a level head, and knows what will happen if Romeo pursues his lo ve of Juliet. I think that a person that can help a close friend make good decis ions is an invaluable addition to anyone's life. In Act 3, Mercutio fights Tybalt on behalf of Romeo and his relationship with Ro meo. Many friends say that they would do this kind of thing for someone close to them. However, it is tough to know the truth until a situation like this one co mes up. Romeo attempts to break up the fight, but Tybalt stabs Mercutio. Mercuti o was correct in his predictions that Romeo's love for Juliet would cause pain a nd misery. As a bystander that is not directly involved in what is going on, Mer cutio can clearly see the danger of what Romeo is doing. Throughout all the struggle and strife of the play, Mercutio was the one that co uld add comedy to an otherwise tragic play. From the Queen Mab speech, to his dr amatic fight scene, he was there providing one humorous moment after another. Th e Queen Mab speech was an attempt to raise the spirits of Romeo. Again, I can id entify with Mercutio because I like to provide some comic relief when things are going poorly. Mercutio's character is essential to the play, and is very well written in. He f oreshadows the devastating events, serves as Romeo's friend, and provides a humo rous break from the emotional tragedy. Mercutio seems to be a very brave and pri ncipled man. He is witty, caring, and has a level head. For all of these reasons , Mercutio is my favorite character in both Romeo and Juliet and all of Shakespe are.
