Pluralul substantivelor este o problema destul de complicata, dar dupa un studiu atent si sustinut, poate
fi stapanit la perfectie.
REGULA GENERALA: PLURALUL SUBSTANTIVELOR SE FORMEAZA PRIN ADAUGAREA
UNUI -S LA FORMA DE SINGULAR: BOOK – BOOKS, CAR – CARS.
OBSERVATII PRIVIND PRONUNTIA:
1. -S se citeste [s] dupa consoanele surde [p], [t], [k], [f], [θ]: drops, hats, locks, roofs,months.
2. -S se citeste [z] dupa consoanele sonore si dupa vocale: boys, realms, cars, pencils
Cele
terminate in vocala si -y urmeaza regula generala: play – plays
3. unele substantive termnate in -f si –fe formeaza pluralul in –ves: leaf – leaves, shelf -shelves, calf – calves,
half – halves, wolf – wolves, wife – wives, knife – knives, life – lives
Exceptii: chief – chiefs, cliff – cliffs, handkerchief – handkerchiefs, roof -roofs, proof – proofs, dwarf – dwarfs
Unele dintre aceste substantive au forme duble de plural: dwarf – dwarfs/dwarves, hoof – hoofs/hooves,
handkerchief – handkerchiefs/handkerchieves, scarf – scarfs/scarves, wharf – wharfs/wharves
4. substantivele terminate in consoana si –o, primes –es la plural daca sunt mai demult introduse in limba
engleza: cargo -cargoes, hero -heroes, potato – potatoes, tornado – tornadoes, volcano – volcanoes.

character – 1.caracter 2. personaj literar characters – caractere, personaje characters – litere (semne grafice)
draught – curent de aer draughts – curenți de aer draughts – jocul de dame (cu verbul la singular)

SINGULAR PLURAL – SENS OBISNUIT PLURAL – SENS DIFERIT
scale – 1.solz 2. gamă muzicală scales – 1. solzi 2. game muzicale scales – cântar, balanță
SUBSTANTIVE COLECTIVE
O serie de substantive, desi au forma de singular, exprima adesea ideea de plural. Aceste substantive se
numesc substantive colective. – family, crew, team, government, police, audience, etc. Ele se folosesc cu verbul la
singular cand se accentueaza notiunea in sine, ca un tot unitar, si cu verbul la plural cand se accentueaza elementele
constitutive:
Family is an important element of our society.
My family are at home right now.
Unele dintre aceste substantive se folosesc doar cu verbul la plural: people (cu sensul de oameni,
lume), folk, cattle, vermin, poultry.
Vermin are very frequent around this time of year.
5
Substantivele care au doar forma de plural (defective de singular) se imart in urmatoarele categorii:
1. nume de stiinte, obiecte de studiu, etc. terminate in -ics: mathematics, physics, ethics, athletics, gymnastics –
acordul se face cu verbul la singular
2. boli: measles, mumps, hysterics, blues, – measles si mumps se folosesc cu verbul la singular
3. obiecte compuse din doua parti (summation plurals): – folosite cu verbul la plural
Aceste obiecte formate din doua parti se numara cu „a pair of”: a pair of trousers, a pair of pliers, etc.
4. parti ale corpului: loins, vitals, genitals – folosite cu verbul la plural
5. unele nume de jocuri: billiards, darts, skittles, bowls – folosite cu verbul la singular
6. alte substantive: outskirts, arms, grounds, remains, stairs, troops, tropics, archives, ashes, pains, spirits. – folosite
cu verbul la plural
Genul substantivelor
În limba engleză există trei genuri: masculin, feminin, neutru și comun. Cum se face
diferențierea în funcție de gen? Foarte simplu. În primul rând, substantivele care denumesc
persoane de sex masculin sunte de genul…masculin (:)): man, father, brother, grandfather…
Iar cele care denumesc persoane de sex feminin sunt – ati ghicit!! – de genul feminin:
woman, mother, sister. grandmother.
This is my cat. Her
name is Tree.
când este vorba despre o personificare. În acest caz, numele de animale mari sau
considerate puternice (horse, ox, lion, eagle, tiger, etc.) sunt de genul masculin, iar cele
de animale mici sunt de genul feminin (parrot, sparrow, mouse, etc.)
denumesc fenomene naturale puternice sau periculoase, fluvii, munți: wind, hurricane,
storm, blizzard, summer, winter
denumesc sentimente puternice sau violente: death, hate, anger, love, crime ,fear,
thrills, etc.

trăsături de caracter negative: pride, envy, jealousy
sentimente pozitive: pity, wisdom, friendship
ambassador ambassadress

Cazul substantivelor
marcat prin of.
Genitivul sintetic
Regulă generală: genitivul sintetic se formează prin adăugarea unui ‘s (apostrof și s) la
sfârșitul substantivului respectiv: my sister’s cat, the neighbour’s house.
Excepții:
8
cu anumite unități de măsură, mai ales pentru timp și spațiu: a mile’s walk, an hour’s
lecture
cu pronume nehotărâte ca other, neither și pronumele compuse cu -body, -one, no-,
every-: anybody’s business, the other’s reply
cu unele expresii fixe: a needle’s eye, a bird’s eye view
pentru a numi anumite locuri și localuri: the barber’s (shop) – frizerie, frizer, the
baker’s (shop) – brutărie, brutar, St. Paul’s (Cathedral)
în genitivul dublu: a poem of my friend’s – o poezie de-a prietenului meu
OBSERVAȚII:
Genitivul analitic
Genitivul analitic se formează cu particula of și stă după substantivul determinat: the house of
his neighbour. Genitivul analitic se folosește în următoarele situații:
1. dacă sunt mai multe substantive proprii legate prin and: This is the friend of Jane, Bill
and Jennifer.
2. pentru subliniere: the plays of G.B. Shaw
3. dacă substantivul nume de persoană are articol nehotărât sau un adjectiv
demonstrativ: the life of a soldier, a book of this poet
4. dacă substantivul propriu este fromat dintr-un grup de cuvinte: the period of Stephen the
Great
complement indirect introdus prin prepoziția for: I bought the CD (Ac) for my brother
(D).
adjective care stabilesc o comparație: equal, similar, inferior, superior, adequate: She is
equal to her brother (D) in languages.
alte adjective ca: cruel, kind, affectionate, etc. He is kind to his little sister (D).
CAZUL ACUZATIV
În general, cazul acuzativ este cazul complementului direct. Îm limba engleză modernă poate
fi marcat doar prin locul substantivului în propoziție (topică), urmând regulile de mai jos:
1. când există un singur complement în propoziție, de obicei acesta este așezat imediat
după verb și este complement direct: Close the door, would you?
2. când există două complemente în propoziție, se pot întâlni două situații:
ambele complemente sunt directe în cazul acuzativ: She asked meAc a questionAc.
unul este complement direct (în Ac) și unul este complement indirect (în dativ): Mary
told meD a storyAc.
10
verbul (adesea format din aceeași rădăcină cu verbul): to fight a long fight, to sing a song.
CAZUL NOMINATIV
În limba engleză, substantivele în cazul nominativ au următoarele funcții
sintactice: subiect, nume predicativ și apoziție. Indentificarea unui substantiv în cazul
nominativ se face cu ajutorul topicii (ordinii cuvintelor în propoziție):
