introducere | introduction
Dr. Arh. Magdalena Stănculescu, Director SP, iar coordonatorii de curs: Șef Lucr.
Dr. Arh. Marina Mihăilă (an IV, 2017-2018, 2019-2020; an V, 2018-2019) și Șef Lucr. Dr. Arh. Mihaela Zamfir (an IV, 2018-2019; an V, 2017-2018, 2019-

This book is a collective volume that brings together ideas built on architecturalresearch presented in the course of Architectural Design Theory (TP): the
contributions of 22 authors who were invited lecturers in the course during three academic years - 2017-2018, 2018-2019 and 2019 -2020. The
Architectural Design Theory course was developed within the Synthesis of Architectural Design Department (SP) in close connection with the workshop
activity in the senior years, IV-V, in accordance with the framework themes and fields of study related to the IV years (Functional-spatial mix , Adaptive
re-use) and V (Special structures and technologies, Future challenges), respecting the didactic objectives of each semester.
During the three academic years, the titular of the TP course was Assoc. Prof. PhD. Arch. Magdalena Stănculescu, SP Director, and the course
coordinators: Lect. PhD. Arch. Marina Mihăilă (IV year of study: 2017-2018, 2019-2020; V year of study: 2018-2019) and Lect. PhD. Arch. Mihaela Zamfir
(IV year of study: 2018-2019; V year of study: 2017-2018, 2019-2020). The course took place both on-site and online (with the COVID-19 pandemic,
starting with March, 2020) with real success in both variants and positive feedback from both SP students and academic staff.
In a logical thread of the TP course, the book is structured on four chapters, Chapter 1_Theoretical discourse, Chapter 2_Theory of architectural
functional programs, Chapter 3_Research by design and Chapter 4_Architectural education. The Book is a collection of recent research in the field of
architecture, while representing support for the activity of design synthesis workshop studios in the final years of study.
Inviting you to reading, we thank all the authors for their valuable contributions: Vladimir Arsene, Maria Boștenaru Dan, Daniel Comșa, Iulius Cristea,

5 Structure
The resistance structure, under one of the most
difficult seismic zones in the world in Bucharest, will
constitute 40% of the cost of a tower, compared to
20-25% of a similar cost for a tower in Western
Europe or the United States. The quality of the soil,
the level of the groundwater and the seismic
accelerogram specific to the area determine this
situation. Both the performance and the economics
of the structure become design parameters from the
first phases of a project, constituting in fact criteria
of composition, together with the elements of
volumetric composition. For a tower, the structure of
resistance and the architecture is in fact a whole unit
inseparable in any process of performance design.
The necessity of breaking the structure to horizontal
movements, earthquake and then wind, will be
decisive in the configuration and placement of the
vertical circulation cores or the perimeter breaches.
Vertical alignment of the structure required by the
anti-seismic design also determines the
configuration underground levels, the garage and
the technical spaces. In fact, however uninteresting it
may seem at first glance to design underground
parking lots in relation to the strength structure and
supporting walls of the enclosure, it becomes, from
