I. Curs:
Dacă sursa critică are referiri la toate cele 3

Mihai A. Stroe: The Age of Enlightenment and the Rise of the British Novel; The Age of Romanticism and of
the Revolutions
examen.
4
Mihai A. Stroe: The Age of Enlightenment and the Rise of the British Novel; The Age of Romanticism and of
the Revolutions
6
Mihai A. Stroe: The Age of Enlightenment and the Rise of the British Novel; The Age of Romanticism and of
the Revolutions
7
Mihai A. Stroe: The Age of Enlightenment and the Rise of the British Novel; The Age of Romanticism and of
the Revolutions
Midterm 1 & Midterm 2 --- 7 autori diferiți, 3 opere (roman: mid 1) + 4 opere
(poezie: mid 2)
ISI, Scopus, EBSCO, ERIH Plus, etc.).

Stroe (2021) Thomas Kuhn and the cognitive matrix: the thousand faces of science and
art. Creativity 4(1): 391–514.
MLA).
Arată astfel:
There could have been no rëaction had the act been infinitely continued. So long
as the act lasted, no rëaction, of course, could commence; in other words, no
gravitation could take place – for we have considered the one as but the
manifestation of the other. (Poe 1848: 90)
10
Mihai A. Stroe: The Age of Enlightenment and the Rise of the British Novel; The Age of Romanticism and of
the Revolutions
In the primordial Particle, there was thus “absolute Unity” and simultaneously “infinite
divisibility” (Poe 1848: 31). This is one reason why the Particle has not been
completely exhausted by diffusion in Space.
‘text “text” text’
“text,”
“text.”

ALIGN RIGHT ȘI ALIGN LEFT simultan)

Mihai A. Stroe: The Age of Enlightenment and the Rise of the British Novel; The Age of Romanticism and of
the Revolutions
In this state of affairs, if there had been an infinity of matter in the universe, Poe
argues, no movement would have been possible, because every little atom would have
been impelled equally in all directions. So, matter had to be finite, while space had to
be infinite:
No Rëaction could have taken place; no movement toward Unity could have
been made; […]. To explain: – Grant the abstract tendency of any one atom to
any one other as the inevitable result of diffusion from the normal Unity: – or,
what is the same thing, admit any given atom as proposing to move in any given
direction – it is clear that, since there is an infinity of atoms on all sides of the
atom proposing to move, it never can actually move toward the satisfaction of
its tendency in the direction given, on account of a precisely equal and
counterbalancing tendency in the direction diametrically opposite. (Eureka; Poe
1848: 68)
Thus the atom in question must remain stationary forever. Under the impossible
circumstances which we have been merely endeavoring to conceive for
argument’s sake, there could have been no aggregation of Matter – no stars – no
worlds – nothing but a perpetually atomic and inconsequential Universe. In fact,
view it as we will, the whole idea of unlimited Matter is not only untenable, but
impossible and preposterous. (Eureka; Poe 1848: 69)
Poe stresses that the act of creation was punctual; after it, there was a discontinuity in
the creative activity:
There could have been no rëaction had the act been […] continued. So long as
the act lasted, no reaction […] could commence; [...] no gravitation could take
place – for we have considered the one as but the manifestation of the other.
(Eureka; Poe 1848: 90)
In the primordial Particle, or the Titanic Atom of Titanic atoms, there was thus
“absolute Unity” and simultaneously “infinite divisibility” (Poe 1848: 31). This is one
reason why the Particle has not been completely exhausted by diffusion in Space.

In this state of affairs, if there had been an infinity of matter in the universe, Poe
argues, no movement would have been possible, because every little atom would have
been impelled equally in all directions. So, matter had to be finite, while space had to
be infinite.
He elucidates further his thought, by showing that a gravity operating in an
infinite quantity of matter would cause everything to halt down to absolute stasis,
hence the necessity to postulate that matter in the Universe is by no means infinite, but
limited in quantity.
Poe stresses that the act of creation was punctual; after it, there was a
discontinuity in the creative activity.
