APLEO Companion to Teaching English Online, Volume 1 – A1, A2, A2+ este o

blood"
After a few years, the king gets married again to a beautiful woman
who wants to be the most beautiful woman in the country. She stands in
front of her magic mirror and asks “Mirror, mirror on the wall. Who is the
most beautiful of all?“ The mirror always answers “You are, my Queen!” But
one day, the mirror answers that the most beautiful one is Snow White.
The queen gets very angry and decides to kill Snow White. She calls a
huntsman to kill Snow White in the forest. But the huntsman lets her go.
Snow White escapes and finds the dwarves' house. The dwarves let her
live with them. Their names are: Doc, Bashful, Grumpy, Sleepy, Sneezy,
One day the queen asks the same question: “Mirror, mirror on the
wall. Who is the most beautiful of all?“ And the mirror answers “Snow
White!” So she finds out that Snow White is still alive. The queen is very
angry again and dresses like an old woman. She takes a poisoned apple with
her. The queen gives it to Snow White, and the girl takes it because she
does not recognize her stepmother. When Snow White eats the apple she
falls down.
In the evening, the dwarves come home and see her on the floor.
They can't wake her up. They think she is dead. So they put her in a glass
box in the forest. The dwarves cry and cry. But, one day, a handsome
Prince passed by. "What a beautiful girl!" -he says. He kisses her and she
wakes up. The Prince says to her: "I love you. Come with me to my father's
castle". They get married and they live happily ever after.
Task1. Read the text and decide if the following statements are TRUE
OR FALSE
3. Why is the Queen so angry with Snow White that she decides the girl
must die?
6. What does the name Dopey tell us about one of the dwarves?
8. Can you guess who the leader of the dwarves is? Explain how you figured
that out.
Task 3. Read a paragraph of your choice aloud, but try to replace the
possible.
E.g. This is the world-wide famous story of Snow White and the seven
dwarves. Quite far from our world there is a handsome king and a
beautiful queen. They are really happy and they have a very pretty, cute
daughter. They name her Snow White. But when Snow White is still a baby
the queen becomes very sick and sadly/ unfortunately she dies.

Merlin
Merlin closed his eyes and pointed his finger at another mountain of
rocks. They exploded into a thousand pieces! When he opened his eyes,
all he could see was the blue sky. Everything round him was empty and
silent – the trees, the hills, the lakes. Slowly, a voice reached Merlin’s
ears. It was Uther, the King of England, speaking in his castle miles away.
Merlin was a magician with special powers to see, hear and know all human
things.

opened them again, he was in Uther‘s castle.

NBC, the studio that produced and aired Star Trek, was not
enthusiastic about the series but gave it a chance anyways. The show
featured many interesting characters that Star Trek fans grew to love
over the next three seasons. Captain James Kirk, played by William

officer, Mr Spock, was played by Leonard Nimoy. His character was a half-
Vulcan who tightly controlled his emotions and always tried to solve
problems with logic. By 1969, Star Trek’s ratings were too low and it had
lost many viewers. It was aired during Friday nights, when most people
were not watching TV. NBC cut the show’s budget and the quality of the
shows dropped. Despite its cancellation, Star Trek lived on again in movies

Heavily padded from floor to ceiling, it looked a bit like a lunatic asylum.

the pilot put the plane into a 45-degree climb which lasted around 20
seconds. Then the engine cut out and we became weightless. Everything
became confused, and left or right, up or down no longer had any meaning.
After ten seconds of free-fall descent the pilot pulled the aircraft out of
its nosedive. The return of gravity was less immediate than its loss, but
was still sudden enough to ensure that some students came down with a

Each time the pilot cut the engines and we became weightless, a new
team conducted its experiment. First it was The Dutch, who wanted to
discover why cats always landed on their feet. Then it was the German

Americans had an idea to create solar sails that could be used by satellites.

HARRY POTTER
Rain was still lashing the windows, which were now inky black, but inside all
looked bright and cheerful. The firelight glowed over the countless
squashy armchairs where people sat reading, talking, doing homework or,
in the case of Fred and George Weasley, trying to find out what would
happen if you fed a Filibuster firework to a salamander. Fred had "rescued"
the brilliant orange, fire-dwelling lizard from a Care of Magical Creatures
Harry was at the point of telling Ron and Hermione about Filch and the
Kwikspell course when the salamander suddenly whizzed into the air,
emitting loud sparks and bangs as it whirled wildly round the room. The
sight of Percy bellowing himself hoarse at Fred and George, the
spectacular display of tangerine stars showering from the salamander's
mouth, and its escape into the fire, with accompanying explosions, drove
both Filch and the Kwikspell envelope from Harry's mind. By the time
Halloween arrived, Harry was regretting his rash promise to go to the
death day party. The rest of the school was happily anticipating their
Halloween feast; the Great Hall had been decorated with the usual live
bats, Hagrid's vast pumpkins had been carved into lanterns large enough
for three men to sit in, and there were rumours that Dumbledore had
booked a troupe of dancing skeletons for the entertainment.
"A promise is a promise," Hermione reminded Harry bossily. "You said you'd
go to the death day party."
So at seven o'clock, Harry, Ron, and Hermione walked straight past the
doorway to the packed Great Hall, which was glittering invitingly with gold
plates and candles, and directed their steps instead toward the dungeons.
