NICOLAE
“Sf. Nicolae” Wooden Church patroned by Saint Hierarch Nicolae and “Buna Vestire” (The
Annunciation), is an original and authentic document of history and architecture, one of the most
representative monuments of Ialomiţa County, mentioned on The List of Historical Monuments at
position IL-II-m-A-14075.
History. Description. Patrimony
The first documented evidence of “Poiana” Wooden Church is a stone plate located in the
church porch, from 1737, belonging to its founder, the ’boyar’ (landlord) Răducan Târcă, together
with the rest of the land owners. On the gravestone, the following words are written with pointed
Cyrillic letters: ''Under this stone rest the remains of God's servants Chirca Stana Dragomirri Zafta
Dumitraşco Petco Gheorghe Tudorache Dobra Maria Tudoria and children Voica Păunia Dragomir
Dumitraşco Velica Maria Tudora Stan Pena Matei Rada Cucea Dumitra Dobra Zamfira Ivan
Zaharia Pavel 1737 ”.
In 1775, historical documents mention the founding of a school in The Church of Poiana de
Jos, with two priests and a deacon.
The original icons and the imperial doors are from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Around 1900, the church was excluded from service.
In the 50’s, due to flooding, the church was almost completely abandoned. The storm
damaged roof was repaired by the villagers. But the doors of the iconostasis, the icons, the old books
and the bell have disappeared from the church.
At the initiative and through the efforts of Mr. Răzvan Ciucă (manager of Ialomiţa County
Museum during 1977-1980, 1984-1989, 2001-2002 and manager of the Museum of Agriculture during
1990 - 2011), in 1979 the church was moved from Poiana de Jos and restored at Poiana de Sus and in
2000 it was moved in the park belonging to the Museum of Agriculture, where on December 17 th, was
hallowed by P.S. Dr. Damaschin Coravu, Bishop of Slobozia and Călăraşi.
Thus, a new parish “Buna Vestire” (The Annunciation) was born and Dragoş Gabriel Stanciu
was appointed as the first parish priest.
The damaged vault was renovated and restored by the artist Ion Nicodim, using the oil on
canvas technique - an allegory on the Eucharist theme, him also being the manufacturer of the
chandelier, carved in oak (Cherubim holding torches).
The icons of the nowadays altar screen, the deacon doors and the “prăznicarele” (main icons),
are made by the artist Ion Grigorescu in the period 2003 - 2004.
The “pisania” carved in wood was made by the artist Dragoş Gabriel Manole.
Wooden Church “Poiana” is built using the Blockbau system: walls are made with five oak
beams called “blăni” stacked horizontally and joined together at the ends with clasps (called
“ţincuri”).
Hatchets and axes were used to carve and join the beams together. Under the eaves, the ends of the
transversal beams (fixed on the horizontal ones without using the metal) and the rafters jutting out,
form a system of support which has also a decorative effect. The roof made of shingle covers the
whole building except the tower.
The plan of the church was kept untouched: the rectangular elongated nave (length - 16.10 m,
width - 6.30 m) continues with an apse (the inside of the altar) with four sides arranged in a semicircle
shape. The entrance is made through an open porch continued by the “pronaos” (“women's porch”),
the “naos” and the altar with a small window placed inside the holy altar following the axis of the
church. The vault of the nave and the altar both have a semi-cylindrical shape, supported on spring-
ribs (arches) with fir tree ceiling boards. Originally, the whole church was paved with slabs of stone,
but they were kept only near the iconostasis (called “solee”). When the church was moved they were
replaced with pine plank flooring. The main decorative element is the rope belt (“The Rope”,
“Abraham's bosom”, “The Eternity”), carved along the middle beam, whose continuity is interrupted
by the windows and the apse of the altar. The porch has six columns with carved chapters and brace
arcades at the beams. The portal of the entrance is decorated with engraved frames and a cross.
Decorative elements are also to be found in the pews, which were almost completely restored, at the
“proscomidiar” and at the table of the Holy Altar. The Holy Altar table, supported by four pillars
portraying the Four Evangelists, includes carved feudal decorative elements.
The patrimony of the church includes Holy grails, gold plated, silver plated or tinned discs,
stars, rushlights and censes (“cadelniţe”) (18th century – 20th century), old religious books (18th–
20th), the pedestal (“tetrapod”) used by Saint Calinic of Cernica.
On the plateau in front of the church, there are two stone crosses. The first is dated 1889 and is
believed to have belonged to one of the last priests who had served the church of Poiana. It is carved
using the ‘méplat’ decorative technique and has an engraved Romanian text, but written in the Cyrillic
language, with the names of those who raised the cross, and the symbols: the bird of soul - Holy Spirit,
the church with three steeples, embraced trees and the sun in vase. A second cross, dated 1877, is
made using the same technique and bears the following symbols: the cross, the bird of soul - the Holy
Spirit, Seraph.
Wooden Church “Poiana” provides complete religious services for “Buna Vestire” (The
Annunciation) Parish, becoming an important religious and cultural landmark. The church, in
connection with the Museum of Agriculture, conducts regularly important cultural events.
