Grouping students
In a classroom students can be organised in different ways: they can work as a whole
class, in groups, in pairs or individually. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages,
each being more or less appropriate for different activities.
Fiecare tip are propriile avantaje și dezavantaje,
Whole-class teaching, where students sit in rows listening to a teacher who stands in front
of them, is still the most common teacher–student interaction in many cultures. Though it has
many limitations, whole-class grouping has both advantages and disadvantages.
culturi. Deși are multe limitări, gruparea de clasă întreagă are atât avantaje, cât și
dezavantaje.
Whole-class teaching helps to build class spirit, the feeling that everyone is involved,
together. Such experiences give us points of common reference to talk about and can be used as
reasons to bond with each other. It is much easier for students to share an emotion such as
happiness or amusement in a whole-class setting.
It is suitable for activities where the teacher is acting as a controller. It is especially good
for lecturing, for giving explanations and instructions. It is an ideal way of showing material
whether in pictures, texts, or on audio or videotape. It is also more cost-efficient, both in terms of
material production and organisation, than other groupings can be. It allows teachers to measure
the spirit of the class in general and is a good way to get a general understanding of student
progress.
progresului elevilor.
However, this does not always mean that the teacher can have students focus on them and
the task at hand. This organisation favours the group, rather than the individual because everyone
is forced to do the same thing at the same time and at the same pace. Many students are
unwilling/ reluctant to participate in front of the whole class since it brings the risk of public
failure. Furthermore, it is less appropriate for communicative speaking activities, and many
students do not like speaking or performing in front of the whole class.
At the opposite end of the spectrum from whole class grouping is the idea of students on
their own, working in a pattern of individualised learning. When we involve students in solo
work (working on their own), the teacher can respond to individual differences in terms of the
pace of learning, learning styles and preferences and is likely to be less stressful for students than
performing in a whole class setting or talking in pairs or groups. Classes are often quiet when
students are working on their own.
However, individual work does not always help to promote class harmony and a sense of
belonging, it does not encourage cooperation and it may be difficult for the teacher to go around
the whole class.
In pair work, students can practise language together, study a text, research language or
take part in information- gap activities. They can write dialogues, predict the content of reading
texts, or compare notes on what they have listened to or seen. Pairwork greatly increases the
amount of speaking time that each individual has. It promotes learner autonomy (because the
pair is doing the work, not the teacher). It is highly sociable and is very useful because it allows
the teacher time to work with one or two pairs while the other students continue working.
However, it can be very noisy and students can get distracted and go “off–task” (they start
talking about something else). Some students do not always enjoy pair work; they prefer to work
with a teacher or in groups. The actual choice of paired partner can be problematic, especially if
students frequently find themselves working with someone they are not keen on.
Alegerea efectivă a
Group work is a cooperative activity: five students, perhaps, discussing a topic, doing a
role-play or solving a problem. In groups, students tend to participate more equally, and they are
also more able to experiment and use the language than they are in a whole class arrangement. It
gives the student chances for greater independence. Because they are working together without
the teacher controlling every move, they take some of their own learning decisions; they decide
what language to use to complete a certain task and they can work without the pressure of the
whole class listening to what they are doing. Decisions are cooperatively arrived at,
responsibilities are shared. The other great advantage of group work is that it gives the teacher
the opportunity to work with individual students. While groups A and C are doing one task, the
teacher can spend some time with Group B who needs special attention.
Group work has its problems. As with “separate table seating, students may not like the
people they are grouped with. In one group, one student may dominate, while the others stay
silent. In difficult classes, group work may encourage students to be more disruptive than they
would be in a whole class setting, and they may revert to their first language, rather than English
when the teacher is not working with them.
Lucrul în grup are problemele sale.
ei.
Deciding when to put students in groups or pairs, when to teach the whole class or let
individuals get on with it on their own, depends upon a number of factors.
The first important aspect that we need to consider in the organisation of the class is the
task. Working with the class as one group will be appropriate for explanations and
demonstrations. If we want to give students a quick chance to think about an issue which will be
focusing on later we may put them in small groups. When students have listened to a tape we
may let them compare answers in quickly organised pairs. If we want our students to practice an
oral dialogue quickly pair work may be the best grouping too.
If the task necessitates oral interaction it is better to put students in groups, especially in a
large class so that they all have a chance to make a contribution. If we want students to write
sentences which demonstrate their understanding of new vocabulary, on the other hand, we may
choose to have them do it individually.
parte, putem alege să-i determinăm să o facă individual.
A lot depends on how the activity fits into the lesson sequences we have been following
and are likely to follow next. If much of our recent work has been active, based on interaction
between various pairs and groups, we may think is sensible to allow students time to work
individually to give them some breathing space. The advantage of having different groupings is
that they help to provide variety, thus sustaining motivation.
Crucial to our decision about what groupings to use is the mood of our students.
Changing the grouping of a class can be a good way to change its mood when required. If
students are becoming restless with a whole-class activity we can put them in groups to give
them a chance to re-engage with the lesson. If, on the other hand, groups appear to be losing their
way or not working constructively, we can call the class back into a plenary session and redefine
the task, discuss problems that different groups have encountered or change the activity.
activitatea.
