In the position below, we have divided the board into 4 parts and in each
corner we have a checkmate.
În poziţia de mai jos am împărţit tabla în 4 părţi şi în fiecare colţ avem câte un mat.

Steelmat positions – poziţii de pat

Steelmat is when there is no chess but neither the king nor any other piece
can move. It usually happens when only the king is left.
Pat este atunci când nu e şah dar nici regele, nici altă piesă nu mai pot muta.
De obicei se întâmplă atunci când a rămas doar regele.

A curious position, in which black has all the pieces on the board and is a
steelmat:
O poziţie curioasă, în care negrul are toate piesele pe tablă şi e pat:

Once upon a time there was an emperor who was bored to death.

A wise old man came to the royal court and taught the emperor the game of
chess.
Un bătrân înţelept s-a prezentat la curtea împărătească şi l-a învăţat pe împărat jocul de
şah.
Out of joy, the emperor promised the sage that he could satisfy his every
wish.
De bucurie împăratul i-a promis înţeleptului că-i poate satisface orice dorinţă.
The wise man asked him for something simple: 1 grain of wheat on the first
square of the chessboard, 2 on the next, 4 on the third square and so on until
square number 64.
Înţeleptul i-a cerut ceva simplu: 1 bob de grâu pe prima pătrăţică a tablei de şah, 2 pe
următoarea, 4 pe a treia pătrăţică şi tot aşa până la pătrăţica cu numărul 64.
The sage was not satisfied with either a bushel of wheat, or a sack, or a
cartload of wheat.
Înţeleptul nu s-a mulţumit nici cu o traistă de grâu, nici cu un sac, nici cu o căruţă de
grâu.
In all his life the emperor could not produce enough wheat to cover the
chessboard.
În toată viaţa lui împăratul nu putea să producă atâta grâu cât să acopere tabla de şah.
Satisfied with the lesson taught, the wise man asked for nothing more and
went on his way.
Mulţumit de lecţia predată înţeleptul n-a mai cerut nimic şi şi-a văzut de drum.
