The priest Gheorghe Armașu from Petreni village, Drochia district accu-
mulated an impressive library of books in several languages: Romanian, Sla-
vonic, Russian, Latin, Greek, French and German. Most of the books are re-
ligious and were brought from Chernivtsi, from villages in the Hotin region,
from churches that were closed by the Soviet authorities in Drochia and Flo-
rești districts, from antique shops in Chisinau and Balti. Gheorghe Armașu’s
library was considered lost, but thanks to Professor Vasile Nicorici from the
“Alecu Rusoo” State University in Bălți, it was found and is currently in the
library funds of this university. In the library of priest Armașu, who died in
1992, there are over 70 books from the 18th-20th centuries and they are kept
in good condition. It is the first personal library discovered in the Republic of
Moldova, which possesses such heritage values.
