Ce este marketingul?
If someone told you that effective marketing was crucial in large companies with
well-known brands like Electrolux or Land Rover you might readily agree. Do
smaller firms need to think about their marketing? How about a city – can
marketing ideas be useful to them? Is it possible that a charity company could
usefully spend time thinking about their marketing strategy? St Paul’s Cathedral –
surely marketing could never be something that might concern that august
institution!
In this opening video case, marketing managers from six organisations - from across
the commercial, public and charitable sectors - talk about what marketing means
to them, and how it helps them meet their objectives – and yes, even St Paul’s
does marketing.
Questions:
• Imagine you are the Head of Marketing at Electrolux, facing a saturated home
appliance market. How can marketing help you sell your latest line of products?
• What challenges would you face in marketing an intangible such as the feeling a
visitor experiences when visiting St Paul's Cathedral, as compared to selling one
of Acme's whistles? Can Land Rover and VSO learn from each other?

Now that you should have some idea about the basic concepts and objectives
of marketing you should have realised that understanding both the context of the
organisation you work for and the patterns in the behaviour of your customers are
issues that must be confronted if the firm is to succeed. In this section of the book we
will consider these problems – how companies understand their customers and how
they acknowledge forces and trends within their environments. This video case has
marketers from half a dozen companies talking about how they view these problems
and try to mitigate or solve them. Amongst the interviewees are representatives from
Ikea who discuss problems arising from operating in many different countries and
cultures simultaneously, managers from a family company that sells eggs to health
and safety conscious consumers and executives from HSBC who discuss how they
came to understand a new market.
Questions:
• Do any of these marketers reveal insights into environmental pressures
or aspects of consumer behaviour that surprise you?
• Can you think of effective solutions to any of the issues discussed? Do you
agree with the plans currently in place?

Now that we’ve fully explored the context in which marketing is ‘done’ we move on to
consider the details, decisions and the processes of putting together a comprehensive
marketing strategy. In this video case, we hear from marketers working in three very
different companies in three very different sectors of the economy. Hiscox, a provider
of specialist insurance policies, Royal Enfield, manufacturers of motorcycles and
Inamo – a restaurant in London. As you watch them discuss their strategic and tactical
decision making, consider the commonality between the problems they face in respect
of understanding their customers, communicating and developing profitable
relationships with them and producing goods and services that these customers will be
keen on.
Questions:
• Do all three firms have a good understanding of the wants and needs of their

• Do Hiscox and Royal Enfield face a more complex set of problems than Inamo? If so,

Already in this book we have covered a very large number of issues and topics
on and related to marketing. This final part draws back a little and considers the
impact of marketing on our societies and cultures and discusses whether
marketing ideas and processes can be used to make the world a slightly better
place. In this video case we hear from people involved with the Eden Project in
Cornwall who believe that they are using marketing to make a positive impact
and perhaps helping us to change the way we live.
Questions:
• How is marketing being used before, during and after a visit to the Eden
Project? Can you think of any ways they could do these things more
effectively?
