Quod licet
Ana Olos is a Romanian academic. She teaches English. She is a poet, too.
The last two sentences place her at once in an area which we could call The English
Speaking Empire. Romania may be the “margin” (as Cultural Studies would put
it), but it is beginning to yield its crop of authors whose books are originally
written in English.
Teaching English, and especially teaching English literature, lands teachers
of various nationalities in a position not very different from Joseph
Conrad’s―toute proportion gardée.
Writing poetry in a language that is not one’s mother tongue has its
advantages and disadvantages. As Ioana Ieronim―another Romanian poet who

writes verse in English―once put it very aptly: English makes the Romanian poet
take a distance from himself. The foreign language can be a mirror of one’s mind.
The very same language, acquired at a younger or an older age, urges you to play
with it, to use your knowledge of its grammar patterns creatively. This can easily
become a disadvantage, since one can hardly innovate a language that is not one’s
own. The native speakers will most certainly frown on it. Quod licet Iovi― The
publishing houses will contemplate with distrust a book written by an outsider.
Teachers of English belonging to non-English countries―however hard they
may try to master their language of adoption―will always be outsiders. Few are
those who have the courage and strength to cut off their mother tongue and follow
the example of Joseph Conrad, becoming English in everything.
Ana Olos belongs, therefore, to a mongrel space, riding two languages at
once. She writes poems in English because English has been the lifelong
companion of her mind: as a reader, as a teacher, as an author of didactic books,
as a traveller. Her poetry in English comes as a natural sequel to her profession,
her readings and her sensibility, moulded by long years of apprenticeship.
There is one short question which haunts me as I am writing all this: Who
will read her?

Or rather: Will this book be accepted by the “centre” of the English Speaking
Empire?
We certainly hope so. A few arguments from her own lines come to mind:
“Bitterly sobbing, / Little Red Ridinghood / goes shopping. / Her colour is out
of fashion today .... /Little Red-riding-hood, / change your cap for it’s dripping
with blood / and don’t go gentle into that dark wood again.” And this: “I am
globody. / I am nobody.” And again, “the right of the strong / to be wrong.“
Former communist countries will certainly sympathise. As for native readers,
whether poets themselves or not, Contemporary Literature Press is looking forward
to their reactions and literary opinions.
