The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, delivered a speech on Tuesday, January 11, 2022,
during the public launch event of the Report “Education on Climate Change and the
Environment in Sustainable Schools” , prepared by the Working Group on Education on climate
change and the environment established at the level of the Presidential Administration.
Here is the text of the speech:
Mr. Prime Minister,
Ministers,
Dear members of the Diplomatic Corps,
Dear members of the Working Group,
Ladies and gentlemen,
First of all, I am glad to see how eager the children we have just listened to are to finally have
courses dedicated to climate change and the environment in the Romanian education system
as well. I congratulate them for their involvement and urge them not to lose their enthusiasm!
Education, environmental protection and the fight against climate change are priority topics for
my term as President. These are key areas on which policy makers still lean too little, and that is
why we have organized working groups, think tanks, at the level of the Presidential
Administration, to produce a series of concrete proposals.
Such an approach was the one finalized by the elaboration of the “Educated Romania” Project,
which, through the record amounts obtained through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan,
finally gets a financial allocation to be put into practice.
Following the “Educated Romania” Project, we decided that, during 2021, at the level of the
Presidential Administration, there will be a working group on education on climate change and
the environment.
Today we present the results of the discussions within this group, in the form of a report that we
submit to public debate.
Education is one of the pillars of improving the response to climate change, as education
leads to changes in human behavior, in the sense of a greater responsibility to protect nature
and the future of society as a whole.
The report released today points to a number of issues, but also presents solutions, both to
expand access to education on environmental protection and to combat the effects of climate
change, and to substantiate a green school infrastructure. But what we want more than anything
else is to pave the way for a change of mindset.
I thank the members of the working group for their dedication and I would also like to thank all
those who, in the coming weeks, will be involved in a constructive way in the public debate. I
am convinced that, at the level of society, there are other actors that can contribute to the
implementation in the best form of our proposals.
We all want a clean, waste-free environment everywhere.
We all want our health not to be endangered and to be safe from the devastating effects of
extreme weather events.
We can achieve this through appropriate public policies, through institutions that operate and
enforce the law, but especially through the individual actions of each of us.

Therefore, protecting the environment and combating the effects of climate change cannot be
achieved without a partnership between institutions and citizens. This partnership works if it
is based on combating fake news and focusing on accurate information on environmental and
climate change issues.
In education on climate change and the environment at pre-university level, it is essential to
focus on the primary beneficiary of the educational act - obviously, the student. The model
proposed by the report launched today welcomes the student with a set of attractive digital
tools, applications, interactive textbooks, because we are addressing generations made up of true
digital natives .
At the same time, we need to give students the opportunity to learn about nature in nature, to
understand what sustainability means in sustainable schools, and to become aware of the
importance of protecting the environment through practical, applied activities designed to protect
the environment.
Schools where our students study must themselves become examples of good practice in
sustainability to inspire students to adopt appropriate environmental behavior.
The benefits of a green educational infrastructure are undeniable, scientifically proven, from
creating a more conducive environment for children's development to increasing the quality of
learning and school performance.
Education on climate change and the environment cannot be a solitary endeavor. The success of
such an initiative depends on the involvement of as many different actors as possible: central
institutions, local authorities, teachers, NGOs, parents, communities, companies, the media, etc.
I therefore urge all these actors to be actively involved in implementing measures that increase
access to climate change and environmental education. Good initiatives need to be extended to
the nationwide so that all students benefit from this type of education, regardless of their
environment or the school where they study.
I am fully confident that the Government will approach with all openness and responsibility the
achievement of this priority national objective, in close partnership with the associative
environment, with the private one, but also with the representatives of the young people, who
have shown us in the last years that they are in the forefront line against climate change.
At the next stage, I would like to step up international cooperation on education on these issues.
I am convinced that Romania will find many partners, because no state is bypassed by the
effects of environmental degradation and climate change, and education is an important tool in
counteracting them.
I invite you, therefore, to work together for an educated, healthy and sustainable Romania.
Thank you and I wish you further interesting discussions!
