USEFUL TIPS
Teachers will encourage/teach the students to:
• read the task/instruction/theme of the essay closely and thoroughly!!!!!!!!!
• identify the key words! – as they help them stay within the limits of the topic;
• work out the theme/message! (develop ss’ ability to use their knowledge and the language
accordingly!)
• focus on the items. (the order of the items is not supposed to be reflected in the essay in the same
way, yet, they are excellent indicators for the checklist !!); OR students can make their own plan!
• express their opinion and justify it clearly and concisely! (Ts will explain to the sts what it means
to justify one’s opinion !!! it is not a one-paragraph opinion);
• provide examples (apart their personal experience, focus ss’ attention on literature, knowledge
gained from different school/extracurricular activities and resources);
• stay cohesive and use suitable linking words (again within the limits of the task!);
• keep the balance in the information presented throughout the essay (volume is crucial in essay
writing; we advise a minimum of three sentences for both the introductory and concluding
paragraphs); Encourage students to write a thesis as it helps to express the point the student is
making, it makes and supports the essay’s point in one concise sentence!
• have the content neither too brief nor excessively detailed, maintaining a well-proportioned and
coherent essay structure (3-4 paragraphs);
• REMEMBER : It is a type of academic writing !
Evaluatorul va respecta indicatorii din barem și va identifica:
▪ At the end of the high school cycle the students will demonstrate competence in FL
in accordance with the B1 + level, based on the new CEFR descriptors.
(Companion Volume to The Common European Framework of Reference for
Languages published in 2018 ).
▪ The thematic contexts have been organized into six groups: the student's
personal environment, family environment, natural environment,
social and informational environment, and cultural environment.
An ESSAY is a short formal piece of writing, dealing with a subject, designed to present/develop an idea.
Students can prove their thinking and writing skills in a well connected and compact manner. They have to
demonstrate the reader their position in a clear and simple way.
The structured essay has three necessary components:
❑ An introductory paragraph.
It should begin with a general sentence, and each subsequent sentence should add more information. Thesis
statement, one of the key elements, foreshadows the topics of the paragraphs that follow, it is the main
message the author is trying to deliver. (Yet, it’s not a MUST!)
❑ Body.
Several coherent paragraphs make the body. A topic sentence , usually the first sentence in a paragraph,
reflects its main idea. Reasons and examples are provided to explain to the reader why the subject is or is not
important/relevant. In this part of the essay the author can express their personal opinion which is
thoroughly explained and justified.
❑ A concluding paragraph summarises the main points expressed in the essay. It might show the writer’s
opinion about the issue discussed. Whenever the opinion is included it must be grounded. A conclusion
should finish with a sentence that leaves the reader with a strong final impression.
The four main text types that students deal with: narrative, descriptive, expository, and
persuasive, share similar structures. So, elements of different text types might be wisely
combined in a structured essay!
