outgrowth of psychoanalytic theory and offers the most
comprehensi"e "iew of human !eha"ior and pro!lems of any
approach to family therapy* ,he core goal underlying the
Bowenian model is differentiation of self, namely, the a!ility to
remain oneself in the face of group influences, especially the
intense influence of family life* ,he Bowenian model also
considers the thoughts and feelings of each family mem!er as
well as the larger conte1tual networ of family relationships that
shapes the lie of the family*
Bowen grew up in 2a"erly, ,ennessee, the oldest child of a large
cohesi"e family* After graduating from medical school and
ser"ing fi"e years in the military, Bowen pursued a career in

studies from indi"idual patients to the relationship patterns
!etween mother and child* +rom 1(/4 to 1(5/, Bowen studied the
sym!iotic relationships of mothers and their schi'ophrenic
children at the Menninger .linic in ,opea, 6ansas* 3ere he

first year at $8M3, Bowen pro"ided separate therapists for each
indi"idual mem!er of a family, !ut soon disco"ered that this
approach fractionated families instead of !ringing them together*
As a result, Bowen decided to treat the entire family as a unit, and
!ecame one of the founders of family therapy*
