MEREU ACTUAL. DIN 1906

CUPRINS
Idisul - este limba evreului din Estul, Centrul i Rsritul Europei. Limba
Hasidimilor, dar i limba nceputului renaterii literaturii evreieti moderne.
Limba lui Shalom Aleichem. Limba n care bunicii notii vorbeau n casa, limba
cntecelor, limba primelor ziare evreieti.
n idi i interpretau melodiile trubaduri evrei numii "klezmorim, invitai s cnte la diferite
evenimente sociale, fie ele evreieti sau cretine. Klezmer-ul s-a nscut din melodii laice, dansuri populare,
cntece liturgice evreieti precum i "nigun" acele melodii simple, fr cuvinte ale evreilor ortodoci, profund
documentare, teatru, concerte vom reface pentru dumneavoastr atmosfera specific Europei Centrale i
Romniei.
Yiddish is the language spoken by Jews from Eastern and Central Europe. It is the language of the
Hassidim, as well as the language used in the beginning of the revival of modern Jewish literature.
It is Shalom Aleichem's language. It was used by our grandparents in their homes. It is the language
of their songs, of the first Jewish newspapers. It is the language of a real universe that was destroyed in the
catastrophe of the Shoah.
This language is more than a means of communication it is part of a trans-national culture. Yiddish
is part of the music played by the kelzmerim, as well as of Avram Goldfaden's theater, which appeared here, in
the Romanian town of Iai, in 1876.
Jewish troubadours called "klezmorim used to sing in Yiddish. They were invited to various social
events, Jewish or Christian. Klezmer music originates from laic songs, folk dances, Jewish religious songs, as
well as from the "nigun", those simple, wordless songs of Orthodox Jews, which were deeply influenced by the
music of the peoples they lived among.
Among the events to take place during the festival there are conferences, debates,
documentaries, theater, concerts we shall remake, for you, the specific ambiance of Central and Eastern
Europe before the World Wars, when Yiddish culture was part of daily life in many of the larger or smaller
Romanian towns.

tradiiilor i religiei noaste mozaice, de asemenea, ntr-o
manier idi.
trire ntr-o anumit civilizaie. Putem spune c i modul n care ne
i, bineneles, nelipsita muzic klezmer.
o datorie i o misiune de mare cinste.
povetile prinilor i bunicilor, ne-a bucurat enorm i ne-a fcut s
mbrim fr rezerve ideea acestui Proiect.
din nou, fie i numai pentru cteva zile, tritori ai acelei lumi, continuatori ai
motenirii noastre iudaice.
Festival, i doresc mult succes i tradiionala urare ALOM Festivalului
YIDDISHerVELT.

Deputat
Preedinte al Federaiei Comunitilor Evreieti din Romnia

Yiddish, with its richness of words, thoughts and sounds, was a part
of our identity, us, Romanian Jews, for centuries.
Jewish homes hosted spoken and sung Yiddish. Thus, our thoughts
and every day live were committed to the spirit of our Mosaic traditions and
religion, which also involved Yiddish. This was our way of life, including the
kosher food, a whole universe, with its alimentary rules and life rules in
general, for a certain civilization.
We can say that our spare time was also a part of the Yiddish world,
with poems, jokes, stories, theater and, of course, the Klezmer music.
It is also worth mentioning the contribution of Yiddish artists and
writers to the Romanian, European, and even American culture.
These are just a few reasons to bring Yiddish back to our universe, which is so
different from the first half of the past century. For us, this is a duty and a
mission of great honor.
The fact that the initiative of this Festival belongs to young members
of our community, who knew this Yiddish world only from their parents' or
grandparents' stories, gave us satisfaction and joy, so that we fully
supported this Project.
I am sure that the YIDDISHerVELT Festival will enjoy a lot of interest.
For some, it will probably be a reminder of their Jewish identity.
The Yiddish world reminds us of our forerunners and shows us that
we too can be, even for a few days, inhabitants of that world, continuators of
our Jewish heritage.
I hope you will enjoy the events of this Festival a lot. Let me wish you
good luck and the traditional SHALOM to the YIDDISHerVELT Festival.

Connecting to our beautiful heritage through calture, in this case,

through the long lasting European Jewish language is a challenging and
innovating project that the Romanian Jewish community decided to take
upon itself. I believe this festival will open a window, not only to the rich
past of this community and of the entire European Jewish community,
but will also connect the participants and enrich the current Jewish life In

Dac cultura i tradiiile evreieti n-ar fi existat,

cultura european i universal ar fi fost cu totul i cu
totul altfel.
secolelor literatura, filosofia, muzica, arta plastic,
teatrul i obiceiurile evreieti n Romnia i n Europa.
Doresc s felicit Federaia Comunitilor Evreieti i partenerii si
pentru organizarea acestei srbtori a culturii europene evreieti, a
culturii idi, i s le mulumesc, totodat, c aduc n faa publicului

If Jewish culture and traditions wouldn't have existed, the

European and Universal culture hadn't been the the one we know today.
Through this thought I want to stress the tremendous importance of the
Jewish literature, philosophy, music, fine arts, theatre and traditions for
Romania and for the whole Europe.
The Yiddisher Velt Festival, the feast of Yiddish language and
culture, is an invitation to a celebration of cultural diversity.
Romania is proud to be a country where, despite a dark historical
period, the culture of the Jewish communities not just survived, but also
had grown great artists who belong today to the national common
heritage.
The Yiddisher Velt Festival is, in this reason, a symbol of
Romania's multicultural spirit.
I would like to congratulate the Federation of Jewish
Communities and its partners for organizing this feast of the European
Jewish culture, the Yiddish culture, and to thank for bringing some of the
spotlights of this culture's diversity to the public of Bucharest.

dedicat promovrii limbii i culturii idi. De-a lungul anilor,
Departamentul pentru Relaii Interetnice a acordat asisten
tehnic i financiar pentru realizarea unor programe care
exprim i promoveaz diversitatea etnic, lingvistic i cultural a
fiecrei minoriti naionale din Romnia. Promovarea limbilor
minoritilor naionale i a patrimoniului cultural exprimat n
milenii mai veche dect idiul, o limb poetic, o limb a nvailor i a rugciunilor. i
totui: Limba poporului evreu este ebraica, ins ea ar trebui s fie vorbit n idi,
spunea scriitorul Moshe Nadir.
ca i n alte state central i est europene, limba idi a rmas mai mult o limb de cultur,
Rsrit antebelice n care cultura idi fcea parte din viaa cotidian a multor orae;
la aceast bucurie comun i doresc s transmit felicitri tuturor membrilor acestei
organizaii, pentru ntreaga activitate desfurat pn acum.

First of all, let me congratulate the Federation of Jewish Communities of

Romania for having thought of organizing a festival to promote the Yiddish language
and culture. In time, the Department for Inter-ethnic Relations provided technical and
financial assistance for programs that express and promote the ethnic, linguistic, and
cultural diversity of the national minorities living in Romania. The promotion of
languages spoken by national minorities, as well as of the cultural patrimony
expressed by these languages, continues to represent one main priority for the
Department of Inter-ethnic Relations, in 2010.
The official language of the State of Israel is Hebrew, which is considered
several millennia older than Yiddish. This is a poetical language, used for prayers and
learning. But still, the language of the Jewish people is Hebrew, but it should be
spoken in Yiddish, writer Moshe Nadir used to say. These are wise words, because
Yiddish belongs to the masses; it is a borderless language, which is not limited to any
particular country.
Having been dramatically affected by the Holocaust and by the totalitarian
communist period, as well as in other Central and East-European States, Yiddish
remained a cultural language which preserves the priceless cultural patrimony that
was created in hundreds of years. It is worth mentioning that many countries have
currently implemented programs for reviving the study of Yiddish. Thus, more and
more people learn about this language.
In today's Romania, it is still spoken by a decreasing community, being almost
extinct. This is why the initiative of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Romania
er
to organize the Yiddish Velt Festival is worth being congratulated. By making it, we
hope that the specific ambiance of the Central and Eastern Europe will come back to
life. I am referring to the period before the World Wars, when Yiddish culture was part
of daily life in many towns; there, many Jewish troubadours, the so-called
Klezmorim, were invited to sing at various social events.
Let me assure you that the Department that I am heading is really interested
in the activities of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Romania. We are willing to
support any initiative meant to promote and preserve the Yiddish language and to
raise the interest of the larger audience for the Yiddish literature, theater and music.
The Yiddish language should live as long as Jews live, in Romania and all over the world.
Let me express my satisfaction for participating, together with you, in this
common, joyous event. I would like to congratulate all members of this organization
for their whole activity, so far.

THE GREAT SYNAGOGUE was founded in 1846, in the month of Elul

(December) by the so-called guild of the Lech Jews (having come from Poland).
This is the first large-scale religious building of the community. The building was
erected after a plan made by officiant Israil Hersh and Asher Ancel. It was
consecrated by Grand Rabbi Meshulam Zalman Frenkel and by Rabbi Zalman
Barav, in the eve of Rosh Hashanah 5608 (1847). Its current look is the result of
several repairs, changes and additions.
The building was provided with electrical power in 1915, redecorated
with a Rococo painted ceiling in 1936, repaired in 1945, after it had been
desecrated by the far-right legionary movement, restored in 1980, after the
earthquake of 1977 and used as a museum since 1992.
This synagogue is one of the most beautiful such buildings from
Romania. Its worth was acknowledged, since the Great Synagogue was declared
an architectural monument by the Romanian Academy.

The Museum of Jewish History of Romania is hosted by a former

synagogue called The Holy Unity Temple, built in 1836 and rebuilt in 1910.
It was there that the Chief Rabbi Dr. Moses Rosen Museum of Jewish History
from Romania was inaugurated in 1978. It includes thousands of items which
refer to:
Y
Jewish communal and religious life;
Y
The process of economic, social and political integration of the Jews into

Jewish Music in Theater Productions
Jewish Theater was an important means of socializing for Eastern and Central
European Jews, from the 1850's to a few decades after the Second World War. The most
appreciated theater production included musical pieces, partially or completely. The
Jewish songs and the texts written in Yiddish, which is such a musical language, made it
possible for most of the Jews to be very interested in the world of theater. They were
important forerunners of the international, high-class, musical creations of the 20th
century.
The purpose of this conference is to present essential features of the Jewish, musical
theater from Eastern Europe, focusing on the Romanian territories, especially Moldova,
which hosted the first stable Jewish theater from all over the world.

Y nevoie de un teatru n idi? - Regizor Andrei Munteanu

De ce avem

Y need a Yiddish theater?

Why do we

desconsiderat i dat la o parte. Nimic nou sub soare, idiul, din-totdeauna, a avut de
nfruntat nedrepti, trind i dezvoltndu-se mai departe. Unde sunt cei care l-au
blamat acum 100 de ani? Idiul triete i astzi, altfel dect n trecut, dar triete.

For more than 100 years, Jewish theater was played in Yiddish, a language that
Stanislavsky compared to a fool's costume, with patches and color, full of life, true and
sensitive. Solomon Mihoels made it a part of universal dramaturgy when he staged King
Lear.
Yiddish today is considered a heritage of the past, blamed and chased out by some
people, disrespected and put aside. This is nothing new, since Yiddish always had to
face injustice, but it continued to live and develop. Where are those who blamed it
100 years ago? Yiddish is still alive. It is different from the past, but it is alive. This
proves that we need Yiddish, not the other way around.
But what does Yiddish mean for today's theater? How does it develop? What are its
perspectives in the future? What are the main problems of staging shows in this
language? What are the arguments for the existence of a Yiddish theater, since the
public no longer speaks it?

via Odesa i Sankt Petersburg.
expresie generatoare a identitaii evreilor n Europa, poetul i dramaturgulAvram
Goldfaden.

Ora 12.00 - Teatrul Evreiesc de Stat

In his documentary about Avram Goldfaden, having the secondary title of Pomul
verde, sau de la shtetl la Broadway (The Green Tree, or from the Shtetl to Broadway),
director Radu Gabrea, together with screenplay writer Manase Radnev, make a
different type of road-movie along history, following the path of the founder of the
Jewish theater from its origins, in Moldova, to New York, via Odessa and Sankt
Petersburg.
The two professionals bring back this exceptional personality of the Jewish culture,
who was also called the Shakespeare of the Jews. He acted all over the world in order to
develop Jewish culture and he founded the first professional Jewish theater from Iai,
125 ago. Also, he did his best to keep Yiddish as a living language, an expression that
generates the identity of the Jews from Europe. This was Avram Goldfaden, the poet
and playwright.

i s-au dus ca vntul - povestea Teatrului Baraeum

And they faded out like the wind(The Barasheum Theater)

inexorabil. Atunci, aici, n Bucuretiul cartierelor evreiesti, n jurul tradiionalei Calea
Vacreti , pe strada purtnd numele Doctorului i savantului evreu Iuliu Barasch, a

In 1941-1944, during such a hard time for the Jewish population, a miracle took place
in Bucharest. In that period full of persecution and violence, a group of Jewish artists,
actors, composers and musicians, who were banned from Romanian theaters because
of racial laws, succeeded to create a unique theater: the Barasheum. Leading Jewish
artists were part of this unique place of beauty and faith in life when, in other parts of
Romania, anti-Semitic violence was at its peak. It was then and there, in the Jewish
neighborhoods of Bucharest, around the traditional Vacaresti Avenue, on the street
named after Iuliu Barasch, the Jewish doctor and scientist, that this theater existed. In a
short time, it became one on the most important entertainment places in Bucharest,
during the war: first of all, for the Jewish population, who found back their dignity and
life, as well as for the Christian inhabitants of the town, for whom Barasheum became
a great place of cultural importance.

Cteva cuvinte despre Helem i trgoveii helemii
Cum a ajuns Helemul oraul
nelepilor, asta n-o mai tie nimeni. Tot ce se tie e c fiecare ar i are orelul ei
trgoveilor cu pricina ajunge s li se duc buhul. i cum prostia n-are granie, paniile
nzdrvan cel ce-i moaie mnecile n mncare, ndemnndu-i haina s guste i ea din
bucate, c poate i-o fi foame? Dar Nastratin, dar Pcal care-i rostul lor? S vad i s
se minuneze de multe: dac haina-l face pe om, de ce s-i mai pierzi timpul cu omul: f-i
temenele hainei, i basta!
Doamnelor i domnilor
spectatori, o vei vedea chiar dumneavoastr i v vei minuna foarte!

The Fools of Helem by Moishe Gershenzon

M. Gherenzon (? died in 1944)
Russian playwright of Yiddish, a satirist and fabulist, best known for his play, Hershale
Ostropolier. He was born in Ukraine and became a member of the Yiddish Section at the
Writers' Union of the Former Soviet Union, which was founded some time before the
Second World War. The author died on the front. Among his plays, the State Jewish
Theater also staged Hershale, inspired from folk stories.
A few words about Helem and the helemite townspeople
Helem (Helm) is an old Polish town whose history begins in the Middle Age. The Jewish
community of the town has been there for a long time, too. Still, nobody knows how
Helem became the town of the Sages. We only know that every country has her town
where, for reasons unknown, fools seem to gather more and more. Thus, everybody
starts making jokes about the inhabitants of a certain town. And, since foolishness has
no boundaries, their exploits are being mentioned everywhere, one people to the
other. Only the names of the heroes and certain details vary.
Often, all that is happening is just a result of lack of attention, of confusion or of
somebody's dreaming nature. It is clear only a big-time dreamer can put on a fried
goose instead of the boot, without realizing. Thus, being deeply committed to his
thoughts, he steps on as the booted goose, with difficulty, but still not realizing it. Is he
plain stupid or the joker who dips the cuffs of his shirt in the food, asking it to taste the
goods, in case it is hungry? How about Nastratin or Pcal what is their role? To see
and to wonder of the world: if it is the clothes that make a man, why waste time with
that person: praise the clothes and that's it! When some people keep on carrying pots
full of the sun in their homes, to have heat and light in the winter since winter is unlike
summer, as one of our sages once said! what do you say about it?!
How about our so-called sages from Helem what are they doing? Ladies and
gentlemen, you will see it yourselves and you will be astounded!

Y culture in Romania
The Shtetl

Y
Cultura tetl-ului n Romnia

For the general history of the Jews from the Diaspora, the issue of place is one of the
most complex. Due to the type of contracts between the Jewish communities and the
various forms of Power in the areas they used to live, their main feature is that of a
temporary resident. Thus, they were not tempted to erect large urban structures, as far
as the horizontal organization and buildings are concerned.
In Central and Eastern Europe, Jews had an original form of urban structure: the
shtetl, which corresponded both to their economic needs, and was also a specific
frame of social organization enjoying a certain autonomy. At the same time, the
shtetl, as an area of Jewish concentration, promotes a certain specific culture
(Yiddishket).
My intervention is meant to underline the specific features of this social formula
and to follow up the interesting phenomenon of the shtetl civilization transplant to
large towns.

ct i ca edificii.
concentrare evreiasc promoveaz o anume cultura specific (yidishket).
Intervenia urmrete s sublinieze specificitatea acestei formule i s urmareasc

about the Jewish Bucovina and the Holocaust in Transnistria. The book and exhibition
project The Jewish Bucovina In Search Of Clues is a literary and photographic
investigation. With a deep awareness of the history and culture of the Jewish Bucovina,
the authors explore the multi-ethnic diversity of the past as well as contemporary life in
the region nowadays split between the Ukraine and Romania. The project strives to
both commemorate the nearly vanished Jewish culture, and to build bridges to the lives

Rediscovering Yiddishland in Romania: A Journey to the Last Traces

Y

perspectiva unei absene tragice i de o tristee profund. Europa de Est este oarecum
goal i aceast lips se refer la absena evreilor. Cimitirele evreieti i sinagogile
acestui Idiland relev importana cultural i religioas a motenirii evreieti.

Yiddish was the main language of Eastern European Jewry. There were approximately
13 million Yiddish speakers in Eastern Europe before World War II. In 1930, the great
majority of Jews in Bessarabia and Moldavia, but also in Bukovina and Transylvania
indicated Yiddish as their first language. These parts of pre-war Romania therefore
clearly belonged to what can be called Yiddishland. But is there something left of this
Yiddishland in Romania? Not much, unfortunately. Traveling through what was once
Yiddishland, one is overwhelmed by a sense of tragic absence and a profound sadness.
Eastern Europe is somehow empty emptiness meaning the absence of Jews. The
Jewish cemeteries and the synagogues are often the sole testimonies of what once was.
They are powerful memorials to a civilization that was wiped out in the Holocaust and
fragments of a shattered world. A journey to the last traces of Yiddishland reveals the
cultural and religious importance of the Jewish heritage.

Y and Hesychasm: landmarks, origins, connections

Hasidism
This lecture is meant to be a critical discussion of the concept of synchronicity,
starting from the comparative assessment of the two mystical trends, Chassidism and
Hesychasm, which appeared and developed in overlapping geographical areas and
times. Notwithstanding the legitimacy of any comparative survey on mystical trends
that sprang from different traditions in this case, the Jewish and Christian one the
obvious space and time connections sheds a new light on the relationship between
Chassidism and Hesychasm, showing threads and bridges which were not explained,
until now. In fact, they were not even approached, so far.

The mural

The mural painting of Moldavian synagogues a defining aspect of Yiddish culture

Behind their walls, the modest architectural structures of the synagogues from
Moldova hide monumental treasures. For the Jewish believer who steps into this area,
and not only, the images and symbols, which were painted along the walls or chopped in
wood, entail sacredness. Still, they are also a bridge to the traditions of a culture that is
almost forgotten, today.
This presentation is meant to prove the way in which iconographic themes of
synagogal mural art are also found in the traditional repertoire of Yiddish culture or
represent completely new approaches.

Kabalat Shabbat (The fulfillment of Shabbat)

This service takes place on Friday, before the usual evening service (maariv). This added
part to the evening service originates from an old cabalistic custom from the 16th
century. At that time, cabalists from Safed used to go in the fields on Friday afternoon in
order to welcome Queen Shabbat, since Shabbat was the divine presence, or
Shechina, for them. For Ashkenazi Jews, the Kabalat Shabbat ceremony includes Psalms
9599, Leha Dodi the central part of the service and Psalms 9293.

I was born in a shtetl from Moldova which had a strong Jewish tradition. There, we had
the famous rabbinical court of the great tzadik Matitiahu Friedman. It is there that I
spent my childhood, until I was 10. Despite the fact that it was a long time ago, I will try

Translations into Romanian from the Yiddish classic literature
In 2008, a class of Yiddish literature was initiated at the Goldstein Goren Center of
Jewish Studies. This inevitably led to an assessment of translations from classical
literature which appeared after the Second World War. In principle, the selection of
authors and translated texts complied with the ideological and propagandistic criteria
of the first decades after the war. Later on, this literature was abandoned, being
approached by publishing houses that focused on the culture of national minorities
(Kriterion). It currently became almost the exclusive field of the Hasefer Publishing
House. This presentation approaches the causes and impact of such cultural policies on
the representation of Yiddish literature in Romania.
Dr. Camelia Crciun - is a researcher based at the Center for the Study of the History of Romanian
Jews, visiting professor at the University of Bucharest, at the Goldstein Goren Center of Hebrew

When a concertmaster from Vienna, a Jewish singer from Czernowitz, an accordeon
player from Kiew who is a master on the panflute and a base player from Hungary get
together you create "World Music". A form of playing music, without borders and
boundaries that reconciles and connects five cultures into a joint new form.
"These songs in Moll can be tears of joy or a smile amongst tears. The lyrics are modest
in their simplicity, moving in their humour and profound in the way they express
humility, joy or sadness. "Let it be mine", says a song, "Give me your suffering, befor you
suffer andyour sadness, befor you are sad." Influences from all over the world unite in
the che-mistry of Judaism to create something new and alive: KLEZMER MUSIC. Not
simply the music of times past, torn from sunken world, but the music of someone
wandering this planet. Now and forever".

Having been founded in 2005, HAKESHET

KLEZMER BAND went through several
difficult moments. One of them was when
Gyuri Vilan passed away. He was the mentor
of the band. Also, Mr. Gabi Ardelean, an
exceptional violin player was forced to quit
the band because of poor health. Despite
these difficulties which slowed their
development a lot, members such as AriNagz Alexandru, Boros-Konrad Petru, Kvri Katalin-Eszter, Levi Nicolae, Pntea Ion,
Pop Ilie and Seidler Andrei, continued to work for their dream to come true. They kept
on promoting the heartfelt music of the Jews, KLEZMER. Always together with their
sound engineer, Trendler Iosif, who makes it possible for the pleasant sound to reach
the audience, their portfolio is quite large. After having performed many concerts in the
country and abroad, they successfully took part in the EUROJUDAICA Festival from
Sibiu, in 2007, and PROETNICA Festival in Sighioara, but it is in 2008 that they
successfully passed their greatest test: the Klezmer Festival from SAFED (Israel). Their
performance during that show, as well as their perseverance not to stop working and to
keep on developing their style, brought them new perspectives in 2009. They were
invited to be the first band to sing at the first European Klezmer Festival from Romania,
organized in Bucharest by the Austrian Cultural Forum. After that, they went directly to
the KLEZFIESTA Festival from Buenos Aires, Argentine, where they were considered a
revelation. Thus, they were very appreciated by the organizers, as well as by many of
the participants. Some of them are famous names in the world of the Klezmer music. In
the above-mentioned membership, HAKESHET KLEZMER BAND, will also attend this
prestigious festival, with an especially selected repertoire, meant to be fully enjoyed by
the audience from Bucharest and not only.

Dance is first mentioned in the Exodus chapter of the Bible. It is written that Miriam took a tambourine
and started dancing with the women of Israel on the shore of the Red Sea. Since that time, dance
became a part of Jewish ethos. After the destruction of the Second Temple of Jerusalem (70 CE), Jews
spread all over the world. Thus, the Diaspora was born and Jewish folk dances were influenced by the
features of the areas where Jews were found. The first Israeli folk dance was Hora Agati, created in 1920
by choreographer Baruch Agati. This happened 28 years before the State of Israel was founded. The
first sources of inspiration were of East-European, Arabic and Yemenite origins. Recently, modern
Israeli dances were influenced by Greek, French, Latin and even American trends, by rock music. As far
as its origins are concerned, the hora (danced in a circle) originates in Romania, the Hassidic dance
(rikud hasidi) originates from the Hassidic movement of Eastern Europe (the 18th century) and reflects
the religious concepts of Hassidim, who say that love for God is love for life; the Yemenite step
expresses the way in which the Yemenite were moving in the hot sand of the desert; tcherkssia
originates from Russia, and debka is an Arabic dance. The HORA Group of Israeli Dances was founded in
1996, under the aegis of the Tnuat Alyia Club which was supported by the Jewish Agency for Israel.
Today, the whole activity of the dance group is developed with the support of the Jewish Community
from Bucharest. In time, the HORA Group represented the Jewish Community of Bucharest and
FEDROM at several cultural events and large-scale festivals organized by: The Embassy of the State of
Israel, the Romanian Presidency, the Ministry of Culture, JCC Bucharest, the Ronald S. Lauder
Foundation, the University of Bucharest, The State Jewish Theater and other Jewish organizations from
Romania.

Mames Babegenush s-au nfiinat acum cinci ani i au nregistrat primul lor album, Klezmer Killed the
SUA. S-au concentrat asupra genului klezmer n concordan cu sunetul i muzicienii tradiionali, precum
Naftule Brandwein i Dave Tarras. Totui, de-a lungul timpului, i-au dezvoltat propriul stil i sunet,
Carnegie Hall, n New York.
genului rock. Formaia a cntat la diverse concerte i n multe locuri, printre care Teatrul Regal Danez,
Carnegie Hall din New York & VEGA, precum i la Festivalul Romilor de la New York, Festivalul Roskilde i

The leading representative of ethno / world music genre and at the same time the first Klezmer band in
Slovakia. Pressburger Klezmer Band was created in 1995. Since then we have regularly performed live in
Europe and Slovakia. The variety of performances is also reflected in the difference of venues in which we
have played from Classical concerts to open air festivals. As indicated in the bands name, the source of its
musical inspiration is klezmer (this is folk music of Eastern European Jews) enriched by our own
interpretations, original arrangements and is combined with other styles as well. In this way it is possible
to feel not just pure klezmer, but also elements of jazz, reggae, latino, Slovak, Roma and Balkan folk with
an Oriental touch. To sum up music of the band it is emotive and dance music.
