I have chosen ICJ as my first option due to its ”moot court” style which is different from
a typical UN committee. I am also deeply interested to see a debate that rests upon
disputes about international law., especially given the topic on racial discrimination.
When it comes to my country option, I would like to take on the role of Judge Peter
TOMKA of Slovakia since I find this particular country quite interesting and hope to
represent it in the committee sessions.
The 5th Sustainable Development Goal, set up in 2015 by the United Nations General
Assembly, fights for the empowerment of the female sex and gender equality,
given its significance, not only as a fundamental human right, but as a mandatory
foundation for a peaceful and prosperous world.
In spite of the progress in educational fields, prevention of child forced marriages, and
awareness for the necessity of gender equality, women are still subjected to
opressive laws and social norms, underrepresentation in positions of political
power and sexual assault (which, according to a recent UN study, 1 in 5 women
and girls between the ages of 15 and 49 have experienced).
Through its targets, the 5th goal not only strives for the safety of girls and young women
everywhere, aiming to protect them from all forms of exploitation, including
trafficking, sexual violence, genital mutilation, but for the power of
decisionmaking from a political, economical and personal point of view. It also
fights for women to be given acces to information and resources regarding their
reproductive health, which is a basic human right they are more than entitled to.
In conclusion, the 5th goal is incredibly important and actual through its purpose to make
the world a more secure, inclusive and accepting environment for girls and
women worldwide, in which they can be allowed to express themselves and live a
fulfilled life.
