modern i poate nelege sensul i limitele dac asimileaz sursele modernitii n care sa nscut. i c, n consecin,
ele merit traduse i publicate sistematic n romn.
particular, n componentele sale latin, arab, greac, ebraic.
de pretutindeni textele originale ale unor lucrri n prim ediie, traduse i n limba romn. Prima intenie este ilustrat
de autori precum Boethius, Duns Scotus, Toma din Aquino, Meister Eckhart sau Ablard. A doua cuprinde autori precum
expertiza manuscriselor. Din el fac parte: Anca Vasiliu (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris), Ioana
Munteanu (Universitatea din Bucureti), Anca Criv (Universitatea din Bucureti), Monica Brnzei (Institut de Recherche
et dHistoire du Texte, Paris), Bogdan TtaruCazaban (Institutul de Istorie a Religiilor al Academiei Romne, Bucureti),
Andrei Bereschi (Universitatea BabeBolyai, Cluj), AlexandruFlorin Platon (Universitatea Alexandru Ioan Cuza,

Iai), Adrian Papahagi (Universitatea BabeBolyai, Cluj) i Alexander Baumgarten (Universitatea BabeBolyai, Cluj).

The Medieval Library was born in 2003 and, since the beginning, has revolved around an idea linked to the roots
of the Romanian culture, as well as a particular way of regarding the Middle Ages. This idea had its premise in the belief
that a culture shaped in modern times cannot understand its meaning and its limits unless it assimilates the sources of the
modernity in which it originated. Therefore, in order to gain this understanding, a systematic translation of these
sources into Romanian is essential. However, they refer back to the European Middle Ages, and particularly to its Latin,
Greek, and Arab components, which is why it is crucial to engage and prepare skilled scholars in each of these realms.
For the past twelve years, the release of twentysix volumes has stood as proof of our allegiance to highlighting and
enriching this idea. To the desire of offering Romanian booklovers the fundamental texts of medieval culture in bilingual
editions we gradually added the intention to provide the scholarly audience worldwide the first modern edition of
hitherto unedited texts, translated to Romanian as well. Our first intention is illustrated by authors such as Boethius,
Duns Scotus, Thomas Aquinas, Meister Eckhart and Abelard, whereas the second includes, among others, Hugh of
Saint Victor, Avicenna, and Godescalc of Nepomuk. The volumes brought together scholars, as well as prestigious and
emerging translators, whose brief profile concludes the presentation of each volume in this catalogue. For these
reasons, The Medieval Library is a concept, a collective effort and, at the same time, a school of medieval studies.
The collection is supervised by a scientific council, whose main role is to select the texts, to establish future strategies
and to closely inspect the translation. The scientific council is formed of: Dr. Anca Vasiliu (Centre National de la Recherche
Scientifique, Paris), Dr. Ioana Munteanu (University of Bucharest), Dr. Anca Criv (University of Bucharest), Dr. Monica
Brnzei (IRHT, Paris), Dr. Bogdan TtaruCazaban (The Institute for the History of Religions, Romanian Academy,
Bucharest), Dr. Andrei Bereschi (BabeBolyai University, ClujNapoca), Dr. AlexandruFlorin Platon (Alexandru Ioan
Cuza University, Iai), Prof. George Grigore (University of Bucharest), Prof. Eugen Munteanu (A. Philippide Institute,
Romanian Academy, Iai), Dr. Adrian Papahagi (BabeBolyai University, ClujNapoca) and Dr. Alexander Baumgarten
(BabeBolyai University, ClujNapoca).
The scientific council is open to receiving any proposal of bilingual editions of texts that influenced medieval culture
in any of its aspects. All proposals can be submitted to the editorial board of Polirom Publishing House.
