La Nistrul ndeprtat, n rsrit, se ivea gean de lumin i luna se fcea alburie n urm, la asfinit. Vasca
vatamanul, ntre cei patru cazaci ai lui, i conteni galopul calului, apoi i aplec obrazul cu barb blaie spre copila pe
care o ducea dinaintea lui n curmeziul elei, nvluit ntr-o blni subire i scump. Vzu o fa alb ca floarea
omtului, buze strnse i ochi nchii. Odrasla boiereasc parc era moart; prin blnia de sobol ns, vatamanul simea
tremurnd inima, ornicul vieii. Dup zbucium i ipete nbuite c-o palm mare, aspr, copila czuse ntr-un lein; pe
urm se deteptase n umbletul calului, cu puterile sleite. Nu mai avea putere i voin s strige; obrazul cazacului privit
de jos n sus i se prea peste sam de groaznic i urt: sta cu ochii nchii, s nu-l mai vad, simea ruine n suflet i mare
nenorocire i spaim, dup ce socotise c va muri.

Porumbio, zise Vasca cu glas pe care cerca s-l fac blnd; deschide ochii i nu te teme Noi nu-i vrem
rul Nou ne eti drag i te-am furat dup obiceiul Ucrainei

i vorbea n limba leasc, ca i n ascunziul din pdure, unde puseser suliile n gtul boierului brbos.

Fata nu rspundea. Cazacul ncepu a rde ctr tovarii lui:

E spriat, zise el n graiul ucrainian. Dar are s-i treac. Femeia se-mpac cu vorba i cu podoaba.

Poate doarme rspunse unul din zaporojeni.

Se poate. Dar mai degrab cred c se preface. S-o lsm. Are s aib vreme s se uite la mine. Nopile i chiar
zilele snt fcute i pentru desmierdri

Vasca i scutur capul i fcu din ochi ctr tovari, n lumina sporit a zorilor. Vatamanul era un om cu mijlocul
subire, cu pieptul lat, vnjos i nchegat ca din coarde de oel. Figura lui tnr avea ceva iret i galnic. Era unul dintre
vestiii lupttori ai Ucrainei, iubitor de petrecere, dispreuitor de trud i moarte.

Cel mai btrn dintre tovarii lui, Alioa Popovici, l mustrase pe drum pentru lovitura pe care o fcuse.

Vatamane, ai fcut o prostie. Femeie i trebuie? Nu-i cad destule cnd biruim i dm foc satelor? Acuma
suntem fugari i trebuie s scpm noi singuri. Ai mai luat greutate.

Nu-i nimic, rspunse vesel Vasca, atuncea oricine poate rpi. Acuma am prpdit totul i mcar cu atta s m
aleg

Aud, i rspunse Vasca. Btrnul are ureche bun! ngn el cltinnd din cap. Ne urmrete cineva! Sub braul lui
vin jos simi deodat pe fat rsrind. Ce este? Ce este? zise el rznd. Ai auzit ceva? Ori nelegi puin ce spunem
noi Ai vzut c ne-am oprit i ascultm Nu te teme, din mna noastr nu te poate fura nimeni, noi suntem oameni
tari, obinuii cu de-acestea

O roa uoar iei ca un abur n obrajii fetei.

Ce facem, vatamane? Ce facem? mormi cu mustrare cazacul cel crunt.

Ce facem? Tu crezi, Alioa, c eu, dac vorbesc, nu bag sama i nu cuget? Iat ce este, Alioa. Vine cineva n urma
noastr. Dar calul nu tropot pe drum. Cel ce vine a trecut n fnauri, ori a nfurat copitele cu peteci Prin urmare,
oameni buni, vine un duman dup noi Nu-i aa? Suntem urmrii!

Ei, vezi? Ei, vezi?

Poate s-i fi strns tovari prietinul nostru cel brbos. Vine ziua i suntem urmrii. Trebuie s ne gndim la adpost.
Tu s nu crezi, Alioa, c eu nu m gndesc ce avem s facem. Uite, tovarilor, pdurea se apropie de drum. Intrm n

Ce te miri aa de tare, cpitane Tudore? strig apoi deodat boierul cu semeie. Ce m priveti astfel? i pare ciudat?
Ieri ai fost tu tare i astzi snt eu!

Boierule, eu nu te-neleg!

Ce nu-nelegi? strig Orheianu privindu-l int. Iat judecata mea. Asta-i! Care din voi va ndrzni astzi s ridice un
deget asupra mea? Astzi nu mai este mielul vostru Toma, i Domnia v-ar spulbera de pe faa pmntului de-ai
ndrzni De aceea eu am venit n mijlocul vostru, i nu va cuteza unul s mite braul! Ha-ha!

Boierule, te-neli, zise cu linite oimaru.

Aa? Ha! m-nel? Nu m-nel, cci dac mazurii mei vor rcni numai o dat, cu strnicie, n limba lor, vor veni
toi ceilali i v vor pune pe toi cu feele la pmnt! ndrzneti tu poate, oimarule? Nu ndrzni, c i-i braul frnt. i
te iert pentru cuvntul tu prost, cci o dat, n via, mi-ai fcut un bine

Boierule, strig oimaru cu ochii scprnd, ai greit dac-ai venit n vizunia lupului! Eu mai am un bra tare, i te voi
aeza cu pieptul pe mormntul printelui meu, pe care tu l-ai ucis cu buzduganul lui Aron! Ai ucis: i-a venit ceasul
pedepsei!

Boierul atunci smuci npraznic frul calului. Mazurii chiuir deodat prelung, i le rspunser rcnete cumplite la
marginea satului.

S nu cutezai, mieilor! url Orheianu. S nu cutezi, miele! rnji el ctr oimaru. Te voi bate peste flci, ca pe tatl
tu, i voi spulbera pe toi nemernicii ca tine

Izbucnind ntr-o mnie grozav, de mult stpnit sub vorbe blajine i rnjite, Orheianu i repezi din a
trupu-nainte, scuip pe oimaru i ridic asupr-i buzduganul, pe care-l scoase de sub cingtoare.

Dar oteanul trsese sabia. Atunci l vzur nti neamurile lui, turbat ca fiara, cu ochii cruni i cu obrazul ca de
var. Se schimbase ntr-o clip i nu-l mai cunoteau. Cu braul drept ridic fierul, se repezi ca scpat dintr-un arc, i lovi n
cretet pe Orheian. i-nlnd a doua oar sabia, rcni aa de cumplit, nct mazurii, nfricoai, smuncir friele i se
npustir pe poart.

Urletul lui Tudor era o chemare. Pe ulia satului, din rpa din dosul bisericii, se repezir toi flcii oimretilor
clri, cu sbiile i suliile. Lie venea n frunte ducnd de cpstru calul cpitanului. O clip se oprir, mbulzii n uli
pn departe, n urm, ateptnd. Iar pe oimaru l priveau neamurile lui cum c-o mn trage de barb trupul greu al
boierului i-l leapd lng piatra de mormnt pe care era nsemnat numele lui Ionacu i anul cumplit al morii lui

Fr s mai priveasc n urm, Tudor se prpstui pe poart; Lie l prinse de subsuoar i-l ajut s salte n a; i la
iptul de nval cunoscut de ei, clreii pornir n ropot spre Murgeni, spre mazuri i spre curtea boiereasc.

n urm, numai uncheul Mihu se urni din loc, se apropie de boier, l privi cum zcea n balta-i de snge, i scoase
domol contul din spate i i-l aez cu grij peste piept i peste fa.

Din primele zile ale existenei mele, m-am tot ntrebat: cine sunt? Ce pot fi, dac prezint o legtur de
foi prinse n cotor, cu o copert schiat perfect? tiu! Sunt o carte! Iat primele mele cuvinte.
Mi-l amintesc bine pe tata. l in minte cum se aeza la mas i tot chibzuia i chibzuia. l preocupa
nfiarea mea. Ore i zile n ir nu-i dezlipea ochii de la mine. Dup ce am cptat un aspect atractiv, m-a
trimis la editur, unde am fcut cunotin cu creaiile sale. n scurt timp, am simit ceva straniu n interiorul
meu... Un vrtej de cuvinte, imagini, nume, localiti... Ce se ntmpl? Peste cteva minute totul s-a linitit, am
vzut zmbetul tatei. Nu pot reda starea lui. Auzeam cum i se zbtea inima. Era mndru de mine. M-a lsat pe
o mas i a plecat. Fiind curioas ce am pit, am continuat s-mi explorez interiorul. Vai! ce se ntmpl? De ce
e o furtun? Cine sunt ei? De ce zboar cu balonul? Atunci mi-am amintit c sunt o carte i, din cte tiu,
crile, suratele mele, cuprind texte, povestiri, legende, basme. i toate sunt scitoare: toate se laud i se
ceart, care dintre ele este cea mai interesant, mai mare, mai citit...
Dar ce nseamn combinaia aceea de litere? I-n-s-u-l-a m-i-s-t-e-r-i-o-a-s-? Deci, , sunt o carte de
aventuri. Nu degeaba tata se tot uita la acea hart. O, uite-I pe eroii notri! Acum i pregtesc un loc pentru a
nnopta. Mult succes!
S tii c mi place cum m-a creat tata. Am un coninut frapant, sunt plin de imagini colorate, care v
vor atrage atenia. V asigur c, n timp ce vei citi, se va trezi n voi setea de lectur. Personajele vor deveni
tovarii votri, care v vor transporta n universal lor
Pentru a m cunoate, e bines -mi citii mai nti prefaa.
Dac cineva ar dori s m citeasc, m-a bucura nespus. A vrea s simt cum minile voastre mi
rsfoiesc filele albe, ncrcate cu litere. Doar c ar fi mai abilir 1 dac nu ai face inscripii, cci sunt o carte
nou i a dori s trec pe la muli cititori. Poate cnd voi avea 500 de ani nc voi mai fi n form. Am auzit c
e o onoare pentru o carte s triasc veacuri n ir. Ct mi-a dori s ajung mai repede pe raftul unei librrii!
Poate voi ajunge i n bibliotec familiei regale?! i mulumesc, tat!
