■ Brexit: After more than three years since the U.K. voted to exit the European Union, it looks like 2020 may
finally be the year it actually does. With British Prime Minister Boris Johnson securing a parliament majority
in the December 12 election, the U.K. now looks set to leave on January 31.. But the challenge now will be
for London and Brussels to thrash out agreements on their future relationship.
■ EU Budget: With the U.K. out of the picture, the European Parliament has called on the remaining 27
member states to increase their payments to raise the bloc’s budget for the 2021-2027 period. The
impasse is due to Germany, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands – who pay more into the
budget than what they get in return – asking for it to be cut to at least 1%. The European Parliament
meanwhile wants it to be set at 1.3%.
■ Europe’s Green Deal: Von der Leyen, who took office on December 01, has put a so-called Green Deal at
the forefront of Europe’s ambitions during her five-year term. She plans to make the EU the first climate-
neutral continent by 2050.
■ Migration: Migration numbers to Europe may not be as high as they were during the 2015 crisis and have
steadily decreased since then every year, but the pressure is still being felt across the continent. In 2019
more than 125,000 refugees made their way to Europe either by sea or land, according to the latest
UNHCR figures.
■ China: An EU-China summit will be held in the second half of 2020 between the EU 27 leaders and a
Chinese delegation in the German city of Leipzig. Relations between China and the EU will be crucial in
2020 with both sides trying to reach an agreement on a long-running an investment treaty.
