Diverse grupuri mai mici sau mai mari de verbe asemănătoare la pronunţie:

to tell [tel] - told [təuld] - told [təuld] = a spune, a zice (cuiva), a

povesti
to tell + somebody (me, you, him …) = a spuine CUIVA
to say + something (yes, no, hello, good morning …) = a spune CEVA
Tell me what happened. = Spune-mi ce s-a întâmplat.
I will tell you everything. = O să-ţi spun tot.
I told you the truth. = Ţi-am spus adevărul.
See? I told you… = Vezi? Ţi-am spus eu…
The story was told by my grandfather. = Povestea a fost spusă de bunicul meu.
to sell [sel] - sold [səuld] - sold [səuld] = a vinde
Jane wants to sell her car. = Jane vrea să-şi vândă maşina.
I don’t have that car anymore. I sold it 5 years ago. = Nu mai am maşina aia. Am vândut-o acum 5 ani.
This car is sold. = Maşina asta este vândută.

to dig [dig] - dug [dag] - dug [dag] = a săpa

to dig a hole in the ground = a săpa o groapă în pământ
He dug a large hole in the backyard to plant a nuttree. = El a săpat o groapă mare în curtea din spate(le
casei) pentru a planta un nuc.
to hang (2)[hæŋ] (neregulat)- hung [haŋ] - hung [haŋ] = a întrerupe, închide (tel.)
Atenţie! a nu se confunda cu: to hang (ed) = a spâmzura, a atârna, to hang by the neck = a spânzura
Don’t hang up! = Nu închide (telefonul)!
She hung up. = Ea a închis (telefonul).
to stick [stik] - stuck [stak] - stuck [stak] = a lipi
Stick with me and you you learn a lot of things. = Stai prin preajma mea / ţine-te pe lângă mine şi vei învăţa
o grămadă de lucruri.
Stick a post stamp on the back of the envelope. = Lipeşte un timbru poşal pe spatele plicului.
I’m stuck with this. = M-am potcovit cu asta. Nu mai scap de chestia asta.
to strike [straik] - struck [strak] - struck [strak] = a lovi, a plesni
Strike! – spun jucatorii de popice (bowling) când le dărâmă pe toate dintr-o lovitură
thunderstruck = lovit de traznet (piesa formatiei AC/DC )
to spin [spin] - spun [span] - spun [span] = a se învârti
The earth spins on its axis. = Pamântul se învârte în jurul axei sale.
spinning class – sedinţă / sesiune de pedalat la bicicletă la sală
spinning = programul de centrifugare la maşina de spălat

to show [∫əu] - showed [∫əud] - shown [∫əun] = a arăta

Show me the proof! = Arată-mi dovada!

Let me show you how to do this properly. = Lasă-mă să-ţi arăt / hai să-ţi arăt cum se face (chestia) asta ca
lumea / aşa cum trebuie.
He showed us the prototype. = El ne-a arătat prototipul.
The prototype had never been shown in public before. = Prototipul nu mai fusese niciodată arătat în public
(până atunci).
to sew [səu] - sewed [səud] - sewn [səun] = a coase
sewing machine = maşină de cusut
I made this skirt just by sewing two pieces of material together. = Am făcut fusta asta pur şi simplu prin
coaserea a două bucăţi de material împreună (doar cosând laolaltă două bucăti de material).
to sow [səu] - sowed [səud] - sown [səun] = a semăna (în agricultură)
We'll sow this field with corn. = Vom semăna porumb pe acest teren.
seed = samânţă
As you sow, so shall you reap = Ce semeni, aceea vei culege. / Semeni vânt, culegi furtună.
dar atenţie!!!
to saw [s‫פ‬:] - sawed [s‫פ‬:d] - sawn [s‫פ‬:n] = a tăia cu ferăstrăul
chainsaw = drujbă (chain = lanţ)
They sawed the pipe in half. = Au tăiat ţeava în două (în jumătate) cu ferăstrăul.

to pay [pei] - paid [peid] - paid [peid] = a plăti

Can I pay cash? = Pot să plătesc cash?
I paid the phone bill. = Am plătit factura de telefon.
Dinner was paid by him. = Cina a fost plătită de el.
to lay [lei] - laid [leid] - laid [leid] = a aşeza ; a (se) oua
Lay the statuette on the table gently. = Aşază statueta pe masă cu grijă / uşurel.
The hen has just laid an egg. = Găina tocmai a făcut un ou.
to make [meik] - made [meid] - made [meid] = a face (concret), a
produce, a manufactura
a nu se confunda cu “to do – did – done” = a face (abstract), a întreprinde, a executa, a face ceva, orice,
nimic, tot posibilul, asta etc.
to make a soup = a face o supă
to make sandwiches = a face sandvişuri
to make noise = a face zgomot, gălăgie
Don’t make me angry! = Nu mă enerva! Nu mă scoate din sărite!
You made too many sandwiched. = Ai făcut prea multe sandvişuri.
The cake was made by me. = Prăjitura a fost făcută de mine.
made in China, made in Romania, made in Thailand = fabricat în China / România / Tailanda

to win [win] - won [wan] - won [wan] = a câştiga, a învinge

winner = castigator
Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose… = Uneori câştigi, uneori pierzi…
It’s a win-win situation. = Este o situaţie mutual avantajoasă (în care câştigă ambele părţi).
I won! / We won! = (Eu / noi) am câştigat!
The superbowl was won by the same team three years in a row. = Supercupa a fost câştigată de aceeaşi
echipa trei ani la rând.
to shoot [∫u:t] - shot [∫‫פ‬t] - shot [∫‫פ‬t] = a trage, a împuşca
Don’t shoot me! = Nu mă împuşca! Nu trage (în mine)!
They shot him. = L-au împuşcat.
He was shot in a gun fight. = El a fost împuşcat într-un schimb de focuri / luptă armată.
to lose [lu:z] - lost [l‫פ‬st] - lost [l‫פ‬st] = a pierde
Don’t lose your money! = Să nu-ţi perzi banii! / Nu-ţi pierde banii!

Don’t lose your temper! = Nu-ţi pierde cumpătul! Nu te pierde cu firea!

I lost my wallet.= Mi-am pierdut portofelul.
I got lost. = M-am rătăcit.

to stand [stænd] - stood [stu:d] - stood [stu:d] = a sta (în picioare)

to stand up = a se ridica în picioare
It’s better to stand when you speak in public. = E mai bines să stai în picioare când vorbeşti în public.
He stood up and left in the middle of the presentation. = El s-a ridicat în picioare şi a plecat în mijlocul
prezentării.
to understand [andər’stænd] - understood [andər’stu:d] - understood [andər’stu:d] =a
înţelege
I don’t understand. = Nu înţeleg.
Everybody understood the explanation. = Toată lumea a înţeles explicaţia.
The lesson was understood by every student. = Lecţia a fost înţeleasă de fiecare elev / student.

to come [kam] - came [keim] - come [kam] = a veni

Come here! = Vino aici!
Come on! = Haide! Hai! Haide, mă!
She came home one hour ago. = Ea a venit acasă acum o oră.
to become [bi’kam] - became [bi’keim] - become [bi’kam] = a deveni
Billy wants to become a pilot, just like his father. = Billy vrea să devină pilot, exact ca tatăl lui.
She became a famous artist all over the world. = Ea a devenit o artistă celebră în toată lumea.

to sit [sit] - sat [sæt] - sat [sæt] = a şedea, a sta jos

to sit down = a lua loc
I need to sit when I eat. = Trebuie / am nevoie să stau jos când mănânc.
Sit down, please! = Stai jos / ia loc, te rog!
They finally sat at the table and discussed the issue. = În cele din urmă / până la urmă, au stat la masă şi au
discutat chestiunea.
to spit [spit] - spat [spæt] - spat [spæt] = a scuipa
Don’t spit your chewing gum in the street! It’s so rude! = Nu îţi scuipa guma de mestecat pe stradă! Este aşa
de nepoliticos / grosolan!
to have [hæv] - had [hæd] - had [hæd] = a avea, a servi, a
mânca, a trebui să.
I have a question. = Am o întrebare.
She had a problem but she fixed it. = Ea a avut o problemă, dar a a rezolvat-o.
I’ve never had this kind of problem. = Nu am mai avut genul ăsta de problemă până acum.
What would you like to have, sir? = Ce aţi dori să serviţi, domnule?
I would like to have a coffee, please. = Aş dori să servesc o cafea, vă rog!
I had a coffee earlier. = Am servit / băut o cafea mai devreme.
Would you like to have a cookie? = Aţi dori să serviţi un fursec?
to have to + verb = a trebui să + verb
I have to stop now. = Trebuie să mă opresc acum.
She had to go home. = Ea a trebuit să se ducă acasă.
