E s t e a v a n s a t l o c o t e n e n t l a 1 d e c e m b r i e 1 8 8 7 şi a n u l u r m ă t o r e s t e
m u t a t la a d m i n i s t r a ţ i a centrală, u n d e activează p â n ă în 1889 c â n d se
r e â n t o a r c e l a j a n d a r m i . E s t e s e l e c t a t c a o f i ţ e r de o r d o n a n ţ ă a l
p r i n c i p e l u i m o ş t e n i t o r F e r d i n a n d . în a n u l 1891 este d e c o r a t c u
O r d i n u l C o r o a n a R o m â n i e i , c l a s a V-a. D a c ă primele a v a n s ă r i s-au
f ă c u t d e s t u l de r a p i d , î n a i n t e de î m p l i n i r e a t e r m e n u l u i r e g l e m e n t a r de
c i n c i a n i î n t r - u n g r a d , v a t r e b u i s ă a ş t e p t e a p r o a p e ş a s e a n i p e n t r u a fi
f ă c u t c ă p i t a n , l a 8 a p r i l i e 1 8 9 3 . Pe 4 f e b r u a r i e 1 8 9 4 î ş i d ă d e m i s i a d i n
a r m a t ă d i n s p i r i t de s o l i d a r i t a t e c u a l ţ i 1 2 6 c a m a r a z i , c a r e p r o t e s t a u
a s t f e l î m p o t r i v a m e t o d e l o r a r b i t r a r e d u p ă c a r e s e f ă c e a u î n a i n t ă r i l e şi
t a n s f e r u r i l e î n c a v a l e r i e de c ă t r e g e n e r l u l G r i g o r e C a n t i l l i , I n s p e c t o r u l
G e n e r a l al C a v a l e r i e i . C a m ă s u r ă disciplinară, c ă p i t a n u l S o c e c este

I a ş i . Acolo, p u t e a p r i m i v i z i t e , z i a r e , c ă r ţ i , p a c h e t e c u m î n c a r e de a c a s ă ,
s e p u t e a p l i m b a î n v o i e p r i n c u r t e şi a v e a c e l u l ă p e r s o n a l ă . D a r a c e a s ­
t a nu-1 p u t e a m u l ţ u m i pe g e n e r a l u l S o c e c c a r e a s o l i c i t a t r e j u d e c a r e a
p r o c e s u l u i î n u r m a c ă r u i a a f o s t g ă s i t n e v i n o v a t şi a c h i t a t . T o a t e efor­
t u r i l e p e n t r u a i s e f a c e d r e p t a t e i-au a m ă r â t u l t i m i i a n i a i v i e ţ i i . A
m u r i t l a 31 m a i 1 9 2 8 .

D a t a r e a p o a t e fi f ă c u t ă î n f u n c ţ i e de g r a d u l d e ţ i n u t de a u t o r : a c e s t a p a r e
s ă fi fost e l a b o r a t şi t i p ă r i t î n i n t e r v a l u l 1 8 8 7 - 1 8 9 3 - m a i p r o b a b i l î n 1 8 8 9
s a u i m e d i a t d u p ă - t i m p în c a r e el e r a l o c o t e n e n t . D e altfel, m u l t e d i n t r e
c a r a c t e r i s t i c i l e uniformologice date p u b l i c i t ă ţ i i în a c e s t a l b u m a p a r ţ i n
perioadei anterioare a n u l u i 1895, c â n d a v e a u să se facă modificări
e s e n ţ i a l e în ţ i n u t e l e a r m a t e i r o m â n e . U n i n d i c i u de d a t a r e a r fi şi referirile
f ă c u t e î n t e x t u l î n s o ţ i t o r l a a n i i 1 8 8 4 şi 1 8 8 9 c â n d ' a u c r e s c u t efectivele
m i l i t a r e . î n a c e a s t ă p a r t e s e c u n d a r ă a l u c r ă r i i e s t e p r e z e n t a t ă , pe n o u ă
pagini, s t r u c t u r a armatei r o m â n e - a r m a t a p e r m a n e n t ă , a r m a t a teritorială
c u r e z e r v e l e lor, m i l i ţ i a şi g l o a t a ( L a n d s t u r m ) - şi a n i i de s e r v i c i u p e n t r u
fiecare d i n t r e e l e , r e p a r t i z a r e a c o r p u r i l o r de a r m a t ă p e t e r i t o r i u l ţ ă r i i şi
tabelele c u o r a ş e l e de g a r n i z o a n ă . U r m e a z ă p a r t e a c e a m a i s u b s t a n ţ i a l ă în
c a r e , pe t r e i s p r e z e c e p a g i n i , s u n t d e s c r i s e , î n d e t a l i u , u n i f o r m e l e fiecărei
a r m e şi d i f e r e n ţ i e r e a g r a d e l o r î n f u n c ţ i e de t r e s e , g a l o a n e şi e p o l e ţ i . S u n t
date şi e c h i v a l e n ţ e l e g r a d e l o r î n r o m â n ă şi g e r m a n ă . î n s f â r ş i t , pe u l t i m a
p a g i n ă , s u n t date decoraţiile n a ţ i o n a l e . T o a t e aceste explicaţii s u n t menite
s ă î n s o ţ e a s c ă şi s ă c o m p l e t e z e p r i m a p a r t e , c u i l u s t r a ţ i i , a a c e s t e i l u c r ă r i .
C o p e r t a e s t e foarte e x p r e s i v ă şi b i n e e c h i l i b r a t ă p r i n r e p a r t i z a r e a
e l e m e n t e l o r c o m p o n e n t e : î n p a r t e a s t â n g ă , pe o p ă t r i m e a e i , e s t e figurat
u n d o r o b a n ţ c u tot e c h i p a m e n t u l şi c u p u ş c a î n p o z i ţ i e de a t a c . C e l e l a l t e
trei p ă t r i m i s u n t a c o p e r i t e de t r i c o l o r u l r o m â n e s c pe c a r e , î n m e d a l i o n , s e
a f l ă s t e m a ţ ă r i i şi d e d e s u b t titlul şi e d i t u r a : Die rumănische Armee in
ihrer gegenwărtigen Uniformirung. Leipzig, Verlag von Moritz Ruhl. Pe
c o n t r a p a g i n ă apare portretul regelui C a r o l I într-un medalion s u r m o n t â t
de c o r o a n a r e g a l ă şi î n c o n j u r a t de f r u n z e de l a u r şi de s t e j a r . D e d e s u b t , p e
o filacteră, e s t e i n s c r i p ţ i o n a t n u m e l e s u v e r a n u l u i - K ô n i g C a r l I - a v â n d î n
mijloc u n medalion c u cifrul s ă u . în dreapta este reluat titlul, a u t o r u l
l u c r ă r i i şi e d i t u r a . P e n t r u a s u g e r a s u r s a f o t o g r a f i c ă a a c e s t u i p o r t r e t - a l
c ă r u i a u t o r f u s e s e fotograful b u c u r e ş t e a n F r a n z D u s c h e k , p e n t r u c a r e
n o b i l u l m o d e l p o z a s e , î n 1 8 7 8 , în u n i f o r m ă de c a m p a n i e - î n t r e a g a p l a n ş ă
a f o s t i m p r i m a t ă în n u a n ţ e de o c r u , b r u n şi oliv.

R o m a n i a n A r m y . A t the time I w a s s u r e t h a t t h i s m i g h t b e c o m e a c o m p r e ­
h e n s i v e w o r k to w h i c h n o t h i n g c o u l d h a v e b e e n a d d e d . R e c e n t l y I h a v e
b e e n s u r p r i s e d to d i s c o v e r , i n a s e c o n d h a n d b o o k s h o p , a n a l b u m totally
u n k n o w n to m e a n d to a n y other r e s e a r c h e r b o u n d to s t u d y t h e m i l i t a r y
u n i f o r m s . I t s title i s Die Rumanische Armee in ihrer gegenwărtigen
Uniformirung a n d w a s p u b l i s h e d i n L e i p z i g b y the e d i t o r M o r i t z R u h l .
T h i s e d i t o r w a s w e l l k n o w n in late 1 9 t h c e n t u r y for h i s p u b l i c a t i o n s d e a l i n g
with military topics a n d especially with information upon military uni­
f o r m s . He e d i t e d a l b u m s a b o u t the P r u s s i a n , R u s s i a n , I t a l i a n , A u s t r o -
H u n g a r i a n , B r i t i s h . S p a n i s h a n d even J a p a n e s e a r m i e s a n d t h e i r l a t e s t
u n i f o r m s . A l l of t h e m w e r e c o n c e i v e d on the s a m e p a t t e r n : s o m e p l a t e s
d e p i c t i n g officers a n d s o l d i e r s in s u c h p o s i t i o n a s to r e v e a l the d e t a i l s of
t h e i r u n i f o r m s , the c u t a n d a d o r n m e n t ; s o m e p l a t e s w i t h a c o n c i s e r e n ­
d e r i n g of e a c h u n i f o r m in a r e c t a n g l e w i t h the m a i n d e t a i l s w h i c h m a d e it

m a k e s a n e x c e p t i o n : its a u t h o r w a s c a v a l r y l i e u t e n a n t A l e x a n d r u I.V.
S o c e c . T r a c i n g h i s life we m a y find t h i s a l b u m ' s a p p r o x i m a t e date of p u b l i ­
cation.
A l e x a n d r u I . V . S o c e c w a s b o r n in 1 8 5 9 a s s o n of I.V. S o c e c , a cele­
b r a t e d b o o k s h o p o w n e r a n d e d i t o r i n B u c h a r e s t . In 1 8 8 0 he e n t e r e d the
a r m y a n d h a d a b r i l l i a n t c a r e e r . He w a s quite r a p i d l y p r o m o t e d in the mili-

t a r y h i e r a r c h y , r e a c h i n g t h e r a n k of b r i g a d i e r g e n e r a l i n 1 9 1 3 . E v e n
t h o u g h h e f o u g h t b r a v e l y d u r i n g W W I - b e i n g u n d e r i n c e s s a n t fire for four
m o n t h s - h e w a s c o u r t - m a r t i a l e d a n d expelled from the a r m y . He w a s
m a d e r e s p o n s i b l e for the r e t r e a t - t u r n - r o u t of h i s b a t t e r e d a r m y o n the b a t ­
tle of t h e A r g e ş R i v e r . H e w a s a l s o a c c u s e d of l e a v i n g h i s c o m m a n d .
A c t u a l l y h e w a s a s c a p e g o a t for the m i s t a k e n b a t t l e p l a n s of h i s s u p e r i o r s .
Y e a r s later he p l e a d e d h i s i n n o c e n c e in a well-documented b r o c h u r e he
p u b l i s h e d in 1 9 2 2 , r e p r i n t e d a n d e n l a r g e d in 1 9 2 8 . E v e n t h o u g h h e h a s
b e e n e x o n e r a t e d after a s e c o n d trial h e w a s n ' t able to forget h i s o r d e a l a n d
n e v e r forgave h i s a c c u s e r s . He d i e d i n 1 9 2 8 a n e m b i t t e r e d a g e d m a n .
In h i s y o u t h A l e x a n d r u I.V. S o c e c completed the a l b u m entitled
Die Rumanische Armee in ihrer gegenwărtigen Uniformirung. A s h e
h a d t h e r a n k of first l i e u t e n a n t (the e q u i v a l e n t for the G e r m a n "oberleut-
n a n t " ) b e t w e e n 1 8 8 7 a n d 1 8 9 3 t h a t ' s for s u r e the a l b u m w a s p u b l i s h e d in
t h a t p e r i o d of t i m e .
T h e c o v e r of the a l b u m i s d e v i d e d into two p a r t s : on the left there
i s a " d o r o b a n t z " ( i r r e g u l a r i n f a t r y m a n ) i n full d r e s s a n d w i t h a l l h i s e q u i p ­
m e n t ; o n the r i g h t i s t h e n a t i o n a l flag a n d R o m a n i a ' s coat-of-arms. O n the
first p l a t e t h e r e i s a p o r t r a i t of K i n g C a r o l I of R o m a n i a . T h i s p i c t u r e h a d
b e e n t a k e n i n 1 8 7 8 b y the p h o t o g r a p h e r F r a n z D u s c h e k of B u c h a r e s t . T h e
following p l a t e s w e r e d e p i c t i n g the u n i f o r m s of the v a r i o u s a r m s a n d r a n k s
w h i c h c o m p o s e d the R o m a n i a n A r m y : g e n e r a l , s t a f f officer, aide-de-camp
of t h e K i n g , c a v a l r y , i n f a n t r y , a r t i l l e r y , corp-of-engineers, m e d i c a l c o r p s
n a v y . A s i n a l l o t h e r a l b u m s p u b l i s h e d b y M o r i t z R u h l . the s e c o n d h a l f of
t h i s a l b u m w a s d e v o t e d to the c o m p a c t d e p i c t i o n of the s a m e u n i f o r m s .
T h e a l b u m e n d s w i t h a twenty-four p a g e s e x p l a n a t o r y text in good
G e r m a n . T h e r e , t h e a u t h o r w a s d e s c r i b i n g t h e o r g a n i s a t i o n of t h e
R o m a n i a n A r m y , giving m i n u t e d e t a i l s a b o u t i t s u n i f o r m s a n d e q u i p m e n t .
A few y e a r s l a t e r , S o c e c h a d p u b l i s h e d a n o t h e r a l b u m - of a l a r g e r
s i z e - i n h i s f a t h e r ' s p u b l i s h i n g h o u s e in B u c h a r e s t . I n s p i r e d b y the
G e r m a n one h e p r o d u c e d p l a t e s i n the s a m e c o n c i s e r e n d e r i n g of the m a i n
t r a i t s of t h e R o m a n i a n u n i f o r m s . T h a t a l b u m w a s a l s o u n d a t e d . B u t , a s
l o n g a s t h e c h a n g e s p r a c t i c e d in 1 8 9 5 i n t h e R o m a n i a n u n i f o r m s a r e quite
o b v i o u s i n S o c e c ' s p l a t e s , it i s s u p p o s e d t h a t t h e a l b u m w a s p u b l i s h e d
t h a t v e r y y e a r or s o o n after.
